Short History ofPaving StonesThe Calstone Recipe for QualityPaving stones were used 1000’s of yearsago and set the tone for the old worldcharm they invoke today.Calstone paving stones are made with a patentedcolor-blending process and superior Durafacetechnology. The patented color blending processallow us to blend and distribute up to 6 differentcolors in the paving stone for a more natural look. This surfacing method out-performs other typesof paving stones in color vibrancy, surface texture, strength and wearability.Calstone River RockTan CharcoalInterlocking paving stoneswere developed to out-performasphalt and concrete. Becauselittle attention was paid to thelook of the product, most of theoriginal paving stones were a4 x 8 standardtraditional brick shape and theirgrey cement pavercolor came only from the graycement. As the popularity of paving stones grew,so did the demand for more color and style options.Manufacturers soon realized that the traditionalmethod of producing paving stones limited theirability to provide more aesthetic options.A new and superior manufacturing process wasdeveloped to create stronger surfaces with flexibilityin colors and textures. Using two separate mixdesigns, manufacturers could craft a highly structuralpaver with an added advanced top surface that ismuch more durable and natural looking.Calstone Quarry Stone a multiple sized, textured, Duraface paver.Calstone’s Dual-Mix DesignCalstone’s patented 6-color blending process.Patent # US 7,572,048 B2Calstone paving stones are madeusing a two-step process:1. BASE MIX: The base mix is designedspecifically to provide superior flexural andcompressive strength with very low absorption.2. DURAFACE MIX: The Duraface mix isdesigned to be; extremely abrasion and chipresistant, smooth & dense like natural stone, rich & vibrant in color, fade and slip resistant.

Duraface vs. Through-Mix The Duraface paving stone surface has over three times the valueof other types of paving stonesDuraface has twice as much cement contentDuraface has three times the amount of colorDuraface premium specialty sands insure dense, tight surfacesDuraface’s use of premium white cement creates enhanced colorDurafaceThrough-MixTable of ContentsNote to our customers:About this catalogThe colors depicted throughout ourliterature and samples are representedas accurately as possible. FAQHow come my pavers have variations on the surface?During the de-molding and packaging process you may find somestones with slight surface deformations. These are de-moldingmarks and usually occur in a small percentage of the paving stones. This is normal and is considered part of the manufacturing processthat gives the stones individuality. What is Scuffing? After the concrete pavers are installed, vibrated and swept cleanthe pavement surface is ready for use. The vibration process isused to vibrate the pavers into place and lock the pavers togetherby forcing the sand in between the joints, forcing the pavers tointerlock amongst themselves and the edge restraints. This vibrationprocess is probably the most stress your paving stones will everencounter. Some incidental scuffing or scratches may occur. This isperfectly normal and shouldn’t be confused with improper installationor defective product. The scuffing or scratches occurs when thesurface is chafed and the natural color of the aggregate is exposed. These scuff marks are less noticeable when the color of the aggregateis closer to the color of the pigment. What are Calstone Interlocking Concrete Paving Stones (Pavers)?Calstone pavers are individual precast concrete units. They aremanufactured with our technologically advanced facilities inNorthern California. This specialized manufacturing process ensuresan exacting quality controlled environment that produces pavers ofhigher strength and durability than normal concrete. Per industryspecifications, pavers must meet a minimum average compressivestrength of 8,000 psi. This can be compared to a range of about1,500 – 2,500 psi for poured in place concrete. That means aCalstone paver is 3 times stronger than your current concretedriveway or patio. How do the pavers interlock?Regardless of which Calstone paver shape, color or laying pattern youchoose, they are ALL interlocking paving stones. The term “interlock”comes from the friction of joint sand between paver to paver. Thisinterlock provides pavement superiority in a multitude of ways. Thepavers distribute traffic loading over a greater surface. The paversremain flexible and can withstand minor and major movements ofthe native soils. Maintenance and repairs (if required) are simplifiedbecause no mortar is used in the installation process. The basic system works like this: The pavers are placed on one inchof bedding sand over a compacted aggregate base. The thickness ofthe base will vary depending on its application. Pavers and sand areretained using edge restraints. Commonly used edge restraints includeconcrete curbing, plastic edge restraints, aluminum edge restraints, and concrete edge bond beams. The pavers are compacted into thebedding sand using a vibratory plate compactor. Sand is then sweptand compacted into the joints, filling them and creating “interlock”.Upon completion of this compaction process, the area is ready forimmediate use. Unlike asphalt and concrete, no curing time isrequired for interlocking concrete paving stones.31Are Paving Stones Slippery? No. In fact, Calstone paving stones exceed the CalTrans standardsfor friction coefficient (slip and skid resistance) for freeways andhighway construction. Pavers also surpass the slip resistancestandards established by the American Disabilities Act.Important note: Some sealers on the market can decrease thefriction coefficient under wet conditions. Calstone recommendsAldon Penetrating Paver Sealer if you decide to seal your pavingstone project. This sealer does not effect the slip resistance. What type of sand do I need to use between my pavers?Use a angular washed sand conforming to ASTM C-144(commonly known as Mason Sand) or ASTM C-33 (commonlyknown as concrete sand). For enhanced performanceCalstone recommends Alliance Super Sand. How do I cut the pavers? The two basic methods for cutting pavers are either with a diamondsaw blade or mechanical paver splitter. Because of their high strength, pavers are hard to cut. A paver splitter, with a little practice, willmake a nice cut but cannot make smaller precision pieces. For moreprecision cuts and difficult pieces around down spouts, drains, utilityboxes, etc., a brick saw using a wet diamond blade is recommended.Do I need to seal my Calstone pavers? No, sealing is just an option. But sealing the pavers does havesome advantages. Sealing your pavers will: Make clean up of oil, food, or vegetation stains easier.Help stabilize the joint sand from being washed outby rains or heavy cleanings.Help prevent efflorescence from occurring or recurring.Help prevent vegetation growth.Intensifies color characteristics.Sealing your pavers can take place immediately upon completion ofinstallation or at anytime in the future provided the pavers are cleanand weather permitting. The area to be sealed should be cleanedand allowed to thoroughly dry (approximately 3 – 5 days of warmweather) before the application of the sealer can take place. Althoughpavers may appear dry on the surface, it is very important to wait theprescribed drying time before the application of the sealer.Calstone recommends 1–2 coats of Aldon Penetrating Paver Sealer. This is a solvent based sealer and will outlast and out perform mostwater based sealers on the market. What is that white stuff on my pavers?Occasionally, some pavers may have a whitish residue upon calledefflorescence. Efflorescence is a natural by-product from the cementhydration process and can be found in any concrete or mortar product.Calcium oxide inside the paver reacts with water in the capillaries andforms calcium hydroxide. This seeps to the surface, and reacts with thecarbon dioxide in the air to form calcium carbonate, a whitish residue. When moisture on the surface evaporates, the white efflorescencebecomes visible and will wear off over the course of time. If you wishto speed up the removal of efflorescence, Calstone recommends theAldon Paver Restore shown on the next page.

InstallationInstallation Guidelines - Concrete Paving Stones1.Excavate to the proper design depth (see diagramat top right*). Remove all surplus unsuitable sub-basematerial. Compact the area which has been cleared. Then spread and compact the area with Class II 3/4”minus aggregate for base material. The depth of thebase should be 3 to 12 inches, depending on anticipatedtraffic, native soil conditions or as otherwise directedby Site Engineer, Architect or Landscape Architect.Compact base in lifts to 95% proctor density.Concrete Pavers3.Install the Paving Stones hand tight in the desiredpattern 1/4 inches to 3/8 inches above final grade. The joints between the units should be approximately1/16 to 1/8 inches wide. Most pavers are made withspacer bars to create a minimum joint width. Thesespacer bars will provide the minimum joint necessaryfor sand to enter.4.Cut the Paving Stones when required with a paversplitter or saw to fit accurately and neatly.Installation Tip: When saw cutting, be careful to notallow cutting residue (wet or dry) to land on the pavers. The residue will permanently dull the appearance of thepaving stones. This type of staining is extremely, if notimpossible to remove. Saw cut pavers should be rinsedthoroughly before placing them into the laying field.5.Once an area is installed, compact the pavers 2-3passes into the bedding sand with a plate vibrator. This piece of equipment should be capable of 3000to 5000 lbs. centrifugal compaction force, and operateat a frequency of 80 to 90 hertz.*Design Depth2 3/8"EdgeRestraint1 - 1 1/2"Sand Bed* SeveralTypesAvailable3-12"BaseExisting Soil Sub-BaseTroweled ConcreteConcrete PaversInstallation Tip: Calstone recommends a minimum of6 to 8 inches of compacted base in residential vehicularconditions. 3 to 4 inches in pedestrian only areas.2.Spread concrete sand evenly over the base andscreed to a uniform depth of 1 to 1 1/2 inches up tothe edge. (Edge restraints can be of various types, e.g.PVC (Snap Edge/PaveEdge), concrete, wood, aluminum,etc.). The screeded sand should not be pre-compacted.Sand JointSandBaseMaterialSoil Sub BasePlastic EdgingMetal PinConcrete PaversSandBaseMaterialSoil Sub BaseInstallation Tip: One of the most attractive features ofa Calstone paving stone is the elegant finish achievedthrough the Duraface process. Care should be taken topreserve this finish during installation. Most vibratoryplate manufacturers offer impact pads designedspecifically for paving stone installations. If this isnot available, the installer should use some otherform of intermediate media such as thin plywood, carpet, cardboard, landscape fabric, etc. This added protection is not necessary in ourRiver Rock and Quarry Stone product lines.6.Then sweep a dry sand over the pavers and intothe joints. Make 4-5 passes with the plate vibratoracross the surface or until the joints are full of sand.7.Sweep off excess sand and wash down completedproject. The paver surface is now ready for use.If using polymeric joint sand, read and followmanufacturer’s directions.32

Roman StoneBuilding BasicsRoman Stone is a modular structural buildingsystem that gives you the ability to create anysize structure using it’s modular dimension. The smallest modular dimension is createdusing 4 units (8” x 12” each) on the firstcourse foot print to make a 1’8” x 1’8” square.( see diagram 1 at right ).By adding 4 additional units to the first coursefoot print you can increase the size by 1’ ineither direction. ( see diagram 2 at right ).Using this building concept you can create anysize starting foot print depending on the size ofyour specific project.Example of the first course of a 1’8” x 1’8” pilasterdiagram 1diagram 2Roman Stone is built using concrete adhesive insteadof mortar. Making it easy, fast and very strong.Once you’ve established your foot print and leveledit properly, the second course is created by gluingthe corners in the opposite direction of the firstcourse. Then it’s as simple as repeating the processfor each course until the desired hieght is acheived. As you build each successive course use a level tomake sure that your walls are straight and plum.41
