SpotlightResidentLife isBEE-autiful!Perl TotmanPerl Totman brushes oil on his finished carving of a colonialpioneer man in an ash tree at Muskingum Park. Totman spent nineweeks putting more than 400 hours of labors into chiseling out thesculpture. He started the project as a way to make use out of thepark's ash trees damaged by ash borers. The City of Marietta has cut off the tops of thedamaged trees and left a remaining eight to 10-trunkas a blank canvas for the carvers. Totman has beenapproved by the City of Marietta to carve or allowany wood carver to create pieces of art on any of thenine damaged trees in the park.Marietta, Ohio. Now (July 9, 2022) & Then (1908)114 years ago, prior to our lock and dam system, youmight not have seen any boats flying through the watersof the Ohio like you did this past weekend. Hot, drysummers could leave the riverbed barren and consistentlyfreezing temps would create a thick layer of ice. Neitherextreme allowed nautical transportation. The same conditions that left cargo and passengerboats moored, gave way to other possibilities: vehiclesdriving over the riverbed and opportunities to ice skate.)235th Anniversary Celebration of TheNorthwest Ordinance of 1787"Slavery Prohibited, Religion Necessary andEducation Forever Encouraged!"We were asked by Jean Yost to attend the 235th Anniversaryof The Northwest Territory Ordinance that was held downtownin the park. I think everyone enjoyed the speakers on ourhistory as well as the absolutely beautiful weather. There’s a sea of change in the natural world thistime of year. Despite the oppressive August heat, opportunity to observe nature in motion and marvelat life’s mysteries exists.Summer is prime time for the flying friendly,as well as the not-so-friendly, and other insects ofvarying shapes, sizes and colors. For many insects,it’s time to light up the sky at backyard barbecues, crisscross webs of reflective threads, collect winterwares and ultimately, for others, that means scavenge. In the bee world, you might see a mad searchunderway for pollen and nectar if winter reserves arelow. With autumn approaching, there are fewer floralresources available, so the supply of nectar and pollendrops. Without proper winter reserves, bees starve. In the land of the social stingers, many adultwasps have had nothing to eat all summer. They’vebeen busy taking care of the colony’s young bloods, who’ve now left. For lack of better terms, the adultsare “hangry.” With nothing to lose, these unfriendlyflyers have no qualms about sticking anyone. If you remove the often-bothersome buzzing andswarming sounds from your mind and stop swatting, you’ll notice the beauty of life is fully surroundingyou, thriving among all creatures great and small.Memory CareLead Resident AssistantFrancisI am lead resident assistant on our memory care and workwith a great team. Living our Best Life atElison of MariettaLivingtheDreamCivil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., tookWashington, D.C., by storm when he delivered hisfamous “I Have a Dream” speech on August 28, 1963.He had organized a march on Washington intendingto show America that ending racial problems was ofthe utmost importance. From the steps of the LincolnMemorial, King spoke in front of more than 250,000people who were eager to hear his dreams of peace andchange. This speech later became known as one of themost pivotal moments of the American Civil RightsMovement. King and other civic leaders speaking duringthe March on Washington wanted to promote changethrough peaceful means, as so many events surroundingthe Civil Rights Movement were plagued with unnecessary acts of violence. This speech led to his receipt of theNobel Peace Prize the following year.ladTropical Ambrosia SaIngredientsnges, drained1 can (15 ounces) mandarin oratidbits, drained 1 can (8 ounces) pineapples 1 cup miniature marshmallowcoconut 1 cup sweetened shredded 1 cup sour cream Instructionsoranges, pineapple,In a large bowl, combine theAdd sour cream andmarshmallows and coconut.erate for several hours.toss to mix.
