History of Calhoun CommunityCollegeCalhoun Community College is the result of theconsolidation of the Tennessee Valley State TechnicalSchool and John C.Calhoun State Technical JuniorCollege. The Tennessee Valley State Technical Schoolwas instituted by the Wallace-Patterson Trade SchoolAct of 1947. John C. Calhoun State Technical JuniorCollege was established under the Alabama TradeSchool Authority Act of 1963. The two schools weremerged into a comprehensive institution to become theJohn C. Calhoun StateTechnical Junior College andTechnical School in September 1965. The president isdirectly responsible to the Board of Trustees for theAlabama Community College System (ACCS). The College recognizes the rightof persons to make their own decisions about theirpersonal use of tobacco products away from theCollege. However, in light of findings of the U.S.Surgeon General that exposure to secondhand tobaccosmoke and the use of tobacco products are significanthealth hazards, it is the intent of the College toestablish a tobacco-free environment on its campusesand in its vehicles. Consequently, the use, distribution,or sale of tobacco products, including the carrying ofany lighted smoking instrument, in College buildings orin or upon other College premises or inside Collegeowned, rented or leased vehicles is prohibited.For the purposes of this policy, a "tobacco product” isdefined to include any lighted or unlighted cigarette(including electronic cigarettes), cigar, pipe, bidi, clovecigarette, and any other smoking product, as well assmokeless or spit tobacco, also known as dip, chew,snuff, snus, in any form.All College employees, students, visitors andcontractors are required to comply with this policy,which shall remain in force at all times. Any Collegeemployee or student found to be in violation of thetobacco-free policy will be subject to a monetary fine.Tickets will be issued by campus police officers forviolations of Calhoun's tobacco-free policy. Monetaryfines will be imposed as listed below, depending onwhether the offender is an employee or student.STUDENT FINESAny Calhoun student found to have violated this policyshall be subject to the following fines:1st Ticket 25.00 Fine2nd Ticket 25.00 FineAll fines must be paid within seven (7) days of ticketing.Fines that are not paid within the seven (7) days shallautomatically double in amount.A student who has pending fine or fines may notregister for classes nor have transcripts released untilall fines are paid in full.Calhoun Community College 2020-21 Catalog

Any student wishing to appeal a fine arising from thefinding of a tobacco-free violation under this policy maydo so with the Vice President of Student Services, Dr.Patricia Wilson.EMPLOYEE FINESAny Calhoun employee found to have violated thispolicy shall be subject to the following fines:1st Ticket 25.00 Fine2nd Ticket 25.00 FineAll fines must be paid within seven (7) days of ticketing.Fines that are not paid within the seven (7) days shallautomatically double in amount.Any employee wishing to appeal a fine arising from thefinding of a violation of this policy may do so with theVice-President for Academic Affairs.With the exception of advertising in a newspaper,magazine, or similar publication that is not produced byCalhoun Community College, no tobacco-relatedadvertising or sponsorship shall be permitted onCalhoun Community College property or at collegesponsored events. No tobacco-related advertising orsponsorship shall appear in any publications producedby the College or by any club or association authorizedby Calhoun Community College. For the purposes ofthis policy, the term "tobacco-related"applies to the useof a tobacco brand or corporate name, trademark, logo,symbol or motto, selling message, recognizable patternof colors or any other indicia of product identificationidentical to or identifiable with, those used for any brandof tobacco products or company which manufacturestobacco products.The College President will develop administrativeregulations and procedures as necessary to implementthis policy, including provisions for notification, signage,disciplinary consequences, complaint procedures andenforcement.Procedures will be developed to offer, promoteprevention and education initiatives that activelysupport non-use and address the risks of all forms oftobacco use. The College will also endeavor to haveinformation available for its students and employees oncommunity programs or services related to helpingpersons stop the use of tobacco products.SECURITY/POLICEWe take your safety seriously. To ensure the continuedhealth and safety of Calhoun students and employees,we must all consider our own security, as well as thesecurity of others, a priority when on campus. Should acrime occur on campus, Calhoun strongly encourages8you to report this crime immediately to the College'sCampus Security/Police Department by calling256-306-2575. LeavingScene3of ing 3Disorderly4ConductHate Crime ENT IDENTIFICATION CARDSAll students enrolled at Calhoun Community Collegeare required to have in their possession a valid StudentID card for general identification purposes. This studentID must be presented to school officials, upon request.The student ID card is valid for each semester of thestudent's attendance. Replacement ID cards may beobtained at a fee of 20, payable to Calhoun at theCashier's Office. Replacement cards can not becharged to student accounts. Student ID pictures aretaken in Chasteen Student Services Center, Room 107on the Decatur Campus and in the Admissions Office inHuntsville. Please check the Calhoun website for hoursof operation for each campus.MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATIONAll students driving any type of motor vehicle oncampus must secure and properly affix an officialcollege parking decal to the vehicle regardless of thelocation of classes. Parking decals are available at theswitchboard at the Decatur campus or theAdministrative Office in Huntsville. For students whohave received disability access license plates ordisability access placards for Disability Access ParkingPrivileges under Alabama law and who wish to useCollege disability access parking spaces, specialdisability access parking placards can be obtained inChasteen Student Services Center, Room 220, uponappropriate documentation by the respective student ofhaving received Disability Access Parking Privileges.Decals may also be obtained at the AdministrativeOffice in Huntsville. In the interest of safeguardingdesignated disability access parking spaces frommisuse by persons who are not properly entitled to usethose spaces, the use of disability access parkingspaces will only be permitted for those cars that displayboth a College disability access decals and either adisability access license plate or a disability accessplacard.9HANDICAP PARKING POLICYEligibility to access available handicap parking oncampus requires that a student, faculty or staff membershow proof that they are the legally registered recipientof the state issued handicap parking placard. A validCalhoun ID along with a receipt, similar to a tag receiptfrom the Department of Motor Vehicles, will be requiredto verify that the faculty, staff, or student is theregistered user of the handicap placard or handicap tagand must be presented to the Student DisabilityServices Office. Students must also show a current(paid) schedule. The Calhoun handicap parking placardmust be displayed on the rear-view mirror of the eligiblevehicle when parked on campus. The handicap parkingareas will be monitored. Fines for handicap parkingviolations are 50.00.ABANDONED VEHICLESIf a vehicle is left unattended or is left in the same placefor more than ten (10) days, the vehicle will beconsidered abandoned and will be towed at the owner'sexpense. If a vehicle is illegally parked (for example,blocking another vehicle that is legally parked), theillegally-parked vehicle will be towed at the owner'sexpense.PARKING/TRAFFIC CITATIONAPPEALS COMMITTEEThis is a three-member committee made up of studentsappointed by the Student Government Association. It ischarged with the responsibility of hearing and ruling oneach case in which a student appeals having receiveda parking ticket. The committee meets each Friday at11:00 a.m. in the Student Activities Office, Decaturcampus. Parking appeals at the Huntsville campusshould be made to the Director of that campus.SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATIONRegistered Sex Offenders must provide a copy of theirForm 47 (information submitted to the registering lawenforcement agency) along with a copy of theirschedule for that semester to the Calhoun CommunityCollege Police Department.
