The team has started the year 5-1, theprogram’s best record since 2012, when the Wildcats started the season witha 6-0 mark. The last two times the Wildcats won state championships (2008and 2011), the team entered the home stretch of the season with a 5-1 mark.PLAYOFF PUSH: Having just surpassed the halfway point of the season, the Wildcats are beginning to fight for leverage in the OHSAA ComputerRankings. The Wildcats currently stand at eighth in the Division I, RegionI rankings. The top eight make the playoffs. The Wildcats’ final four gamesof the regular season will pose significant challenges to the Cats. GlenOak,Archbishop Moeller, St. Xavier, and St. Edward have combined for a 16-8mark on the year.SHUTOUT CITY: One of the biggest strengths of the Wildcats is thedefense. The unit has allowed just 35 points through six games, an average of5.8 points per game. More impressively, the Wildcats have shut out four oftheir six opponents this season, including Parma last week. The last Wildcats squad to keep four of their first six opponents off the scoreboard was AlGizzi’s 1980 team. The 2016 defense still has a ways to go to break the schoolrecord of six shutouts in a regular season, set by Ralph Vince’s 1925 team, which won claimed the city championship with an 8-1 mark.COMMITTEE OF CATS: Saint Ignatius run the ball frequently, and forgood reason. The Wildcats’ backfield is one of the best in Northeast Ohio, with the leading one-two punch of Mark Bobinski ‘18 and Jimmy Andrews‘18. The duo has split carries evenly this season, forming a nice committee.Andrews holds a slight edge wih 412 yards on 57 carries, while Bobinski hasa team-best 10 touchdowns, along with 411 yards on 64 carries. QuarterbackPatrick Ryan ‘17 is also a running threat, with 43 rushes for 210 yards andthree touchdowns. Dean Stowers ‘17 provides a nice third option, dashing for233 yards on just 21 rushes, a ridiculous 11.1 yards per carry.LINEBACKER LEGION: The “Linebacker Legion” of Adam Shibley, JohnVelotta, and James Leyden have been one of the best units on the team thisseason. The trio has combined for 42 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5sacks.SHARING THE LOVE: The Wildcats have involved plenty of players on offense this season. A staggering 14 different Wildcats have scored touchdownsthis season. Bobinski leads all Wildcats with 10 of the team’s 33 scores.UPDATE ON THE WILD KITTENS: The freshman blue team defeatedParma, 27-13 last Saturday. The freshman regulars host GlenOak on Saturdayat Wasmer Field. The 6-0 JV squad plays at Kirtland on Saturday at 10 a.m.UP NEXT: The Wildcats hit the road next Friday at 7 p.m. for a neutral sitecontest against the Archbishop Moeller at Otterbein University.

Learning about the Golden Eagles .SOLID START: GlenOak has started out the year with a 4-2 mark, a solidrecord for the Golden Eagles. Scott Garcia’s squad started the 2015 season on a4-2 tear, winning three of its last four to earn a berth to the OHSAA playoffs, where the Golden Eagles fell to Mentor in the first round in 2015.HANGING IN THE HUNT: In large part due to its nice start, the GoldenEagles find themselves at sixth in the OHSAA Computer Rankings, two spotsabove the Wildcats. The Golden Eagles have played some of the state’s best competition, including the Jackson Polar Bears last week. GlenOak lost to Jackson,35-10, but the Polar Bears are no pushovers, currently holding the top spot inthe computer rankings. Just like the Wildcats, GlenOak ends the year with sometough competition, including Saint Ignatius and Canton McKinley.INJURY BLUES: The GlenOak Golden Eagles have suffered several injuriesthroughout the course of the season, losing two quarterbacks to injury thus farthis season. Injuries also hampered the Golden Eagles last week against the PolarBears.HOME COOKING: Bob Commings Field at GlenOak Stadium has provenkind to the Golden Eagles this season. When playing on the friendly confiesof Bob Commings Field, GlenOak has a 3-1 mark. The Golden Eagles haveoutscored opponents, 126-74, on their turf. The team’s only home loss came in a24-21 thriller vs. Massillon on September 1.SHOTGUN SAVVY: The Golden Eagles use a variety of formations, but relyheavily on the shotgun formation. The approach has worked wondered for theGolden Eagles on offense this season, as GlenOak averages a solid 27.33 pointsper game. Quarterback JJ Olivera headlines the offense for the Golden Eagles. The 5’11”, 165 pound senior completed 15-of-25 passes for 120 yards and atouchdown last week against the Polar Bears.ALWAYS ON THE RUN: The running game is crucial to GlenOak’s offensiveattack. The Golden Eagles feature a pair of veteran tailbacks, including seniorsElijah Ladson and D.J. Donald. Last week against the Polar Bears, Ladson ledthe way with 21 rushes for 97 yards. Donald also played a big factor, attempting11 rushes for 87 yards.UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will stay close to home at Bob CommingsField at GlenOak Stadium for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Canton McKinleyBulldogs. The Golden Eagles won last year’s contest between the two crosstownrivals, 34-26.GlenOak ScheduleDateOpponentTime/Score8/26 vs. WoodsideBob Commings FieldW, 42-179/1vs. MassillonBob Commings FieldL, 24-219/9vs. BuchtelBob Commings FieldW, 14-139/16 @ HooverW, 28-0North Canton Hoover Memorial Stadium9/23 vs. GreenBob Commings FieldW, 49-209/30 vs. JacksonRobert Fife StadiumL, 35-1010/7 vs. Saint IgnatiusBob Commings Field7 p.m.10/14 vs. McKinleyBob Commings Field7 p.m.10/21 @ LakeLake Blue Streak Stadium7 p.m.10/27 vs. PerryBob Commings Field7 p.m.

Eddie Dwyer’s Corner: GlenOak PreviewBy Eddie DwyerCleveland, Ohio - If you take a look at the only polls that really matter inOhio High School Football - the Joe Eitel and OHSAA Computer Playoffrankings/ratings - you can understand why Saint Ignatius’ Hall of Fame HeadCoach Chuck Kyle ‘69 refers to Friday night’s first gridiron encounter withCanton GlenOak as a “playoff-type game.”While the end of the regular season on the night October 29th will determine the eight OHSAA playoff qualifiers from Division I, Region 1, Saint Ignatius begins a four-game stretch on Friday night that should return the record11-time Division I state champions to their familiar place in November - a spotamong those playoff teams in Region 1.The 5-1 Wildcats, who last year missed football’s postseason for only thesecond time since their storied playoff run began in 1988 (the other time was2010), currently sit in the eighth spot in Region 1 with an average of 9.3667points.GlenOak, which has been hit by the injury bug over the past few weeks, is4-2 and stands sixth in Region 1 with an average of 10.633 points.Again, the top eight programs at the end of the regular season will advance tothe OHSAA regional playoffs while the rest of the teams in Region 1 put theirequipment away.“They’ve had some injuries, but they’re a great program,” Coach Kyle said ofthe Golden Eagles, who signed a two-year contract with Saint Ignatius. “They’rea playoff-caliber program every year and their offense is definitely a strong running the football type of offense.“They do an off-set I with a little bit of Auburn influence, pulling guardsand tackles, and fullbacks trailing. Getting an extra guy to the point of attack,”Coach Kyle continued. “And they have a strong running back with speed.”Coach Kyle was referring to Elijah Ladson, who appeared to be a littlebanged up in the late stages of last week’s 35-10 loss at Massillon Jackson.Jackson (6-0), the top-rated team in both the Joe Eitel and OHSAA Region 1computer rankings with 17.8000 points, avenged last season’s 48-6 setback atGlenOak. What a difference a year makes.“They’ve run into some problems health-wise with their quarterback,” saidCoach Kyle of the Golden Eagles’ injuries. “Who knows whose going to behealthy for them there.”GlenOak has certainly missed quarterback Tate Rhodes, who broke hiscollarbone in the loss to the Massillon Tigers. JJ Olivera, who hadn’t playedquarterback since middle school and is the team’s third option due to injuries, has showed some promise.“Defensively, they’re not afraid to blitz you, Coach Kyle said of Head CoachScott Garcia’s Golden Eagles. “If you have a little bit of momentum, they’llcome after you and try to break that.
