The last time Chuck Kyle’s team missed the playoffs in 2010, the Wildcats won the OHSAA Division I State Championship in 2011. In 2016, theWildcats will look to return to the playoffs for the 32nd time in Kyle’s tenure.LONG MEMORY: The Mentor Cardinals have won the last three matchups, including a thrilling 63-56 contest at Jerome T. Osborne, Sr. Stadium last season. The last Wildcats’ victory came early in the season in 2013, when this year’sseniors were freshmen. As freshmen, the class of 2017 defeated Mentor, 48-7. Assophomores, the current senior class beat the Cardinals, 41-7.LINEBACKER LEGION: The strength of the 2016 Wildcats will be the defense. The Linebacker Legion will guide a strong defense, featuring a host of veteran players, led by seniors Adam Shibley, James Leyden, and John Velotta. Lastseason, the linebacker trio combined for 83 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, and 5.5sacks. The trio recorded 6 tackles and 3 tackles for loss against Normandy.A PERFECT START: Over the offseason, Patrick Ryan ‘17 assumed the reinsof the offense following the graduation of Dennis Grosel ‘16. Ryan showed nostress against Normandy in his first varsity start, completing 5-of-5 passes for62 yards and a 19-yard touchdown to Travis Pot. Ryan will look to continue hissuccess against a tougher Mentor squad.THE FOUR HORSEMEN: The Wildcats are blessed with a deep offensivebackfield full of playmakers this season. James Andrews ‘17, Dean Stowers ‘17,Mark Bobinsky ‘18, and Matthew Viancourt ‘18 compose a stacked backfieldfor the Wildcats. The biggest back of the bunch, Andrews leads the way as afullback. Bobinski offers a reliable second option, along with sure hands out ofthe backfield. Stowers is a lightning-fast player with the ability to cut on a dime.Viancourt will block for the trio and offer the occasional change of pace carry.A MAN OF MANY TALENTS: Just as Head Soccer Coach Mike McLaughlin‘85 once did, Matthew Trickett ‘17 is pulling double duty. Trickett is playingboth football and soccer this season, starting for McLaughlin’s Soccer Cats andserving as the kicker for the Football Cats. Last year, Trickett hit 4-of-6 fieldgoals and 20-of-20 PATs. Trickett hit a 32-yard field goal against Normandy.ALL IN THE FAMILY: Spellacy is a familiar name in the Saint Ignatius community, and John Spellacy is no exception. The senior center enters his third season as a starter on the Wildcats’ offensive line. The East Carolina recruit receivedAll-Ohio and All-Northeast Lakes District distinction in 2015. Cleveland.comranked him as the #70 player in the state in its preseason player rankings.CAPTAINS OF THE CATS: The four captains for the 2016 season are seniorsJohn Spellacy, Adam Shibley, John Velotta, and Matt Wiegandt.2UP NEXT: The Wildcats will host Valley Forge on Saturday, September 10 atByers Field.

Learning about the Cardinals .TERRIFIC TAD: Quarterback Tadas Tatarunas leads a stacked Mentor offense. The junior enjoyed plenty of success agains the Wildcats last season, completing25-of-34 passes for 531 yards and 4 touchdowns, including two fourth-quartertouchdown strikes. The 6’5”, 215 pound signalcaller led the Cardinals to aregional quarterfinal appearance, where Mentor fell to the eventual Division IState Champion. Against Massillon Washington in last week’s opener, Tatarunasrecovered from a tough start to throw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.GROUND AND GULLICK: Running back Isaiah Gullick burst onto the sceneagainst Massillon last week. The senior broke out for 245 yards on 21 carries, along with 4 rushing touchdowns, adding a touchdown reception for goodmeasure. Gullick tore through the Massillon defense for six runs of 20 or moreyards.A DIFFERENT PATH: Unlike his older brother, Manning Trubisky has foundhis place at wide receiver. Manning’s older brother, Mitch, led the Cardinalsoffense four years ago, and now holds the starting job at North Carolina. Manning is forging his own legacy already, as the senior hauled in a critical 56-yardreception in the fourth quarter. Trubisky’s catch set up a Gullick touchdownrun, which sealed the win for Mentor.BALLHAWK: Defensive back Will Laganke showed his playmaking abilityagainst the Tigers last weekend, helping the Mentor defense hold off a late Massillon comeback attempt. Laganke finished the game with 5 tackles and 1 tacklefor loss, hauling in an interception and recovering a fumble. The junior returnedthe fumble for a 65-yard touchdown and dashed 44 yards on the interceptionreturn.MONEY ZONE: Mentor reached the end zone four times against Massillon, converting on all four chances. Gullick scored on touchdowns of 2, 4, and 18yards, while kicker Tyler Knapp nailed a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter.Last season, the Cardinals finished just 3-of-5 in the red zone against the Wildcats.TRICKERY: The Cardinals showed off an effective trick play against Massillon, utilizing a halfback pass for a 90-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.Logan Shea connected with wideout Ryan Hagan for the touchdown. Will theCardinals pull out a trick play against the Wildcats?Mentor ScheduleDateOpponentTime/Score8/26 vs. Massillon Washington W, 51-30Jerome T. Leyden will startat both tight end and outside linebacker for the Catsagainst Mentor. After lightduty last week, Leyden willlook to grab his first reception of the year and help theWildcats’ “Linebacker Legion” attack a strong Cardinals offense.DL MICHAEL CHIMEPlaying with a hearty mix ofveterans, Chime is a defensiveend without much playingtime under his belt, recording8 tackles in 2015. However, the longtime Mentor residentplayed like a pro last week.Chime tallied a team-best 3.5tackles, along with a sack, twotackles for loss, and a forcedfumble. Attacking the quarterback will be one of Chime’sprimary responsibilitiesagainst Mentor.

Boulton Stadium. The Cardinals-Wildcats Week 2 regular season encounter on Friday nightin Mentor, however, had all of the drama of that 2012 night in Parma.Coach Chuck Kyle’s Wildcats and Coach Steve Trivisonno’s Cardinalsentered the “Game of the Week” as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the area, repectively.Meeting for the 19th time in what is the premier Catholic School versusPublic School football rivalry in Ohio, if not the entire nation, SaintIgnatius (now 1-1) and Mentor (2-0) tested each other’s unbreakable will fornearly three hours before the Cardinals, rallying from a 56-49 deficit with11:55 remaining to be played, celebrated their eighth victory in the seriesand their sixth in their last nine gridiron meetings with the Wildcats, 63-56.The young man who appears to be the next exceptional quarterback outon Center Street, 6-foot-4, 205-pound sophomore Tadas Tatarunas, fireda rope to his gifted senior wide receiver/running back Jason Blizzard andBlizzard, catching the ball in stride, raced 52 yards into the end zone. CalTommasone’s extra-point kick was good and the score was knotted at 56with 7:09 left.Behind the running of standout senior tailback Alex Mathews and aclutch reception by Blizzard, Mentor drove for a first down at the Saint Ignatius 15 as the seconds were ticking off the clock. On a second down and 5yards to go from the 10, and 15 seconds remaining on the clock, Tatarunasrolled left under pressure, regained his balance and threw a TD pass into thehands of his other exceptional receiver, senior Malik Porter, who broke freeacross the back of the end zone. After Tommasone’s PAT it was 63-56 witheight seconds on the clock. Porter’s game-winner was set up by a leapinginterception from Cardinals junior defensive back Michael Ballentine with1:08 left.Saint Ignatius would field the ensuing kickoff and immediately take aknee at its 25-yard line. With eight seconds still on the clock, Wildcats outstanding senior quarterback Dennis Grosel, who threw six touchdown passeson the night, lofted a pass down field that fell incomplete deep in Mentorterritory as time expired. The Wildcats, who trailed, 35-13, with 5 minutes and 21 seconds remaining in the first half, cut the deficit to 35-27 by halftime. Trailing, 49-33,with 6:09 left in the third quarter, the Cats came storming back againbehind Grosel’s arm and the sure hands and routes of seniors Jack Cook andCal Grbac. Sothat’s got to happen onSaturday night. You runto the ball and get to theball, but still there’s thosemoments when it’s oneon-one and the athlete hasto make the play, So we’reworking very hard onfundamentals, obviously, but also getting ourselvesinto good position to make plays.“Defensively, they’re big up front and the matchup of their defensive lineversus our offense line is kind of an interesting thing to watch. It will looklike college lines, to be honest with you. Then the skilled guys take over. Theygraduated some skilled guys and we did, too, but I think Mentor would samethe same thing, it’s the next kid step up.
