VSP VOLUNTEER REPORTThank you to these VSP members for volunteering at The Food Group on August 10th: SueAhlstrom, Judy Bergman, Ruel Carpenter, Rick Haws, Ken Heruth, and Jeanne Morgan. Thegroup repackaged 500 pounds of pasta. Enough for 416 meals. MEDTRONIC VSP GROUPAustin, MN Fall OutingThursday, October 13, 2016Join fellow retirees for a fun filled day aswe travel to Austin, MN in a comfy busfrom Minnesota Coaches. This is awonderful way to experience crisp fallweather and lots of beautiful fallscenery. The all day tour offerssomething for everyone.Our first stop will be at Hormel Foods’recently reopened Spam Museum. Tocelebrate its 125-year anniversary, HormelFoods is hoping to attract 125,000 visitorsto the museum in the next twelve monthswith interactive exhibits and gallerieslooking at Spam's popularity around theglobe, Spam's history with the US military,and Spam today. It also features a set ofbluegrass instruments made of Spam cans,a 12-foot Spam rocket, a Spam canconveyor suspended from the ceiling, anda Spam children's play area.At our second stop, the Hormel HistoricHome, we will have lunch and go on aself-guided tour. The stately 14 roomhouse, built in 1871, was the home of theGeorge A. Hormel Family. It featuresstained glass windows, decorativewoodwork, pillars imported from Italy,Tiffany light fixtures and marblefireplace.

We will be treated to a delicious GermanJagerschnitzel meal: Pork cutlet withmustard-infused sauce spätzle, hot Germanpotato salad, grilled asparagus, red cabbagesauerkraut and an apple strudel desert withwhipped cream.Our next stop will be the Hormel Institute, a worldleader in cancer research through the study offood agents and cell functions. Started in 1942 byJay C. Hormel, The Hormel Institute, University ofMinnesota has a seven-decade history of makingsignificant scientific discoveries aimed atimproving the health of the world. For the past 20 years, TheHormel Institute has targeted its cutting-edge research onbetter ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer’s basicmolecular mechanisms by focusing on developing new anticancer agents.Our last activity of the day will be a guided Austin city tourwhere we will be introduced to local points of interest and lesserknown or quirky sites. At the end of the tour you will be givena spam cookbook.The total cost for this fun-filled outing is only 45 per person. Taxes and gratuity areincluded for the meal and bus driver.
