“Adopt an Element” Pastel Magnified View Drawing – Directions & RubricName:Class:“Adopt an Element” Pastel Magnified View DrawingProject Objective(s):Students will create a collaborative project combining artand science after they “Adopt an Element” from thePeriodic Table.Students will create a magnified view pastel drawing thatsymbolically represents their element in an abstractcomposition.Without the ability to use recognizable images or symbols,the students are challenged to use the Elements of Art toconvey 5 or more “elements” of their “element.”Students:My job for this project is to use either chalk or oil pastels tocreate an abstract, magnified representational drawing ofmy adopted element.By the end of this project, I will have created a pasteldrawing that symbolically represents my adopted elementthrough the use of the Elements of Art and a magnified,abstract composition.Language Objective: Students will discuss their *Element description(s) *thumbnail sketches *mediumchoice *compositional design *strongest composition tocreate *project progress *final project with their table partners and provide each other withuseful and specific feedback that they will then use tomake revisions and refinements to their work beforeturning in.Materials/Tools: *#2 Pencil *Periodic Table*Oil/Chalk Pastel Practice Sheets *Research & InitialPlanning Sheet *Thumbnail Sketch Paper*8.5 x 11 drawing paper (landscape) *Computers*oil pastels *chalk pastelsHelpful Hints, Warnings, and Insights:Oil Pastels start with the darkest color first –layer the colors – dark to lightOil Pastels – blend by mixing the oils throughlayeringChalk Pastels – blend by smudging the layersinto each otherChalk Pastels – start with the lightest colorfirstRemember: NO recognizable images orsymbols! I am creating an abstract, symbolicrepresentation of my Element.Procedures: (Check off- as each step is completed)Step 1: Practice with PastelsAs a class, we will practice how to use both oil and chalk pastels.Oil pastels blend by the mixing of the oils through layering. Oilpastels start with the darkest color first.Chalk pastels blend by smudging the layers into each other andrepeated back and forth use of the colors. Chalk pastels start withthe lightest color first.Step 2: Element & ResearchI will pick my Element from the bucket. I will research my Elementand fill out the Adopt an Element – Research and InitialPlanning Sheet packet – completelyStep 3: Thumbnail SketchesI will use my research on my Element and plan how my entiredrawing is going to look - including color choices – to support theoverall chemical and/or physical properties of my adoptedElement. From my Adopt an Element – Research and InitialPlanning Sheet – I will start sketching out my Element PastelDrawing ideas – Remember to think about what Elements of Artwill help support my Element’s chemical and/or physicalproperties.Step 4: FeedbackI WILL REMEMBER TO GET PEER and TEACHERFEEDBACK!!! I WILL REMEMBER TO TAKE NOTES ON THEFEEDBACK I RECEIVE!!Step 5: Refinements & RevisionsI will use my Peer & Teacher Feedback notes and any new ideasI’ve come up with make changes, refinements and revisions to myplanned Thumbnail Sketches. I also need to plan out WHATCOLORS I’m going to use and WHERE and HOW I’m going touse them!Step 6: Peer-to-Peer & Final Mrs. Grimm “Ok”I will participate in a Peer-to-Peer Review in which I will describemy Adopted Element and explain the Elements of Art/DrawingChoices I made to represent my Adopted Element. I, along withmy Peers, will choose what we believe to be the STRONGESTThumbnail Sketch Drawing based on the Review. I will get theFinal Thumbnail Sketch approval from Mrs. Grimm.Step 7: DrawI will draw my Mrs. Grimm approved Thumbnail Sketch onto myfinal drawing paper – Making sure your drawing fills up theentire paper – top to bottom and side to side.Step 8: Add ColorUsing EITHER the oil pastels OR the chalk pastels, I will completemy drawing by adding the colors that BEST support my Element’sChemical and/or Physical properties. BLEND, BLEND, BLEND – IWILL EMEMBER TO GET PEER and TEACHER FEEDBACK!!!
