If a student is absent or late to school, a parent or guardian must call, email, or provide written documentation tothe school office at their earliest convenience to report the absence.oAny absence in excess of three days may require being prearranged or medical documentation to be excused.2. If a student is absent and a parent or guardian does not provide an excuse by calling or emailing the office prior todaily attendance, an automated phone caller may call the home to alert the parent of their student’s absence.3. If a student is late to school, a parent or guardian must call, email, or provide written documentation to the schooloffice and the student must report to the office for an excused tardy pass before going to class.oAny student who is late to school without the proper documentation, parent call or email may be issued a written warning(BMS strike). The written warning will only be removed if the excused documentation is provided to the office within 48hours following the written warning being issued.4. If a student needs to be dismissed early, a parent or guardian must call, email, or provide written documentationto the school office on the day they need to be dismissed.

5. If a student is absent from school for a legitimate reason, it is the student’s responsibility to check with theirteachers during passing time, before, or after school to arrange for make-up work.6. Parent /Guardian must sign their student “out” at the attendance window in the BMS office if the student is beingpicked up during normal school hours.oPicture identification may be required7. Any student missing in excess of seven days in a semester, without medical documentation, may be placed on aBMS Attendance Contract. Continued attendance issues may result in loss of activity privilegesTardy – All students are required to be in class before the tardy bell rings. An unexcused tardy to class will result in thestudent earning a written warning (BMS strike) upon the third tardy and any additional tardies to follow. Students who aredropped off late without the proper documentation will receive a written warning (BMS strike). The state of Oregon has one of the worst attendance rates in the country. Research studies show that success inhigh school is highly impacted be a students’ ability to attend school. Schools and families must work together toensure that students are attending school. Regular attendance is defined as attending 90% or more of the schooldays. The state defines a student as “chronically absent” for anyone below the 90% attendance rate.Boring Middle School follows the Oregon Trail School District Policy (policy JED included) in defining excused andunexcused absences. The following attendance codes will be used in noting a students’ absence:EExcused Absence – An absence that meets the criteria outlined in district attendance policy JED andhas been communicated to the school within 48 hours.AUnexcused Absence – An absence that has not been communicated to the school by phone or notewithin 48 hours.UXAny absence that has been communicated to the school within 48 hours but does not meet the criteriaof an Excused Absence.SASchool Activity – An absence from a class or classes due to a school activity.ISIn-School SuspensionOSOut of School SuspensionOREGON TRAIL SCHOOL DISTRICT COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE POLICY (Code: JEA)Except when exempt by Oregon law, all students ages 7-18 who have not completed the 12th grade are required to attendschool full-time on a regular basis at the designated school within the attendance area.Persons having legal control of a student ages 7-18 who has not completed the 12th grade are required to have thestudent attend school.
