In so doing,we are able to identify vocational learningopportunities as well as recreational andleisure activities for children and adolescentsresiding in Grafton’s specialized therapeuticgroup homes.

Our ApproachGrafton is person-centered, trauma-informedand data-driven, with each plan of care asunique as the individual it serves. Our holisticapproach involves an assessment not only ofan individual’s unique presentation andneeds, but also those of the family andcommunity, all of which may be developedand strengthened to permit a successfultransition upon discharge. Our philosophy is one of comfort versuscontrol, helping clients thrive in the leastrestrictive environment consistent withachieving the best outcome. We create asupportive, caregiving environment sensitiveto clients’ past experiences of violence andvictimization.Well over a decade ago, Graftonimplemented an organization-wide initiativeto minimize and, where possible, eliminatethe use of coercive techniques such asrestraint and seclusion. Today, not only havewe achieved a 99.8% reduction in the use ofrestraint and 100% reduction in the use ofseclusion, we have dramatically reduced thenumber of injuries to clients and staff.Through our Ukeru Systems division(www.ukerusystems.com) — currently used in20 states and more than 70 private day andresidential programs, private and publicschools, psychiatric hospitals and forensicunits — Grafton now shares this expertisewith other organizations.
