We are also able to serve students with high-functioningAutism. In fact, we are at the forefront in working with individuals on theAutism spectrum, having worked with this population throughout the pastsix decades. We often accept — and, based on clearly defined indicators, are successfulwith — the most challenging students. In many cases, the needs of thesestudents exceed what traditional schools are able to provide. Our approach is person-centered, trauma-informed and data-driven, witheach plan of care as unique as the individual it serves."In public school, [my son] wasspending as much as four hours out ofa six-hour day in seclusion.I askedhow much time was spent in seclusionat Grafton. The answer? None."- Grafton Parent

A Different Kind ofPrivate Day SchoolBy combining special education and behavioral health —balancing academic and functional skills — we allowstudents to recognize and use their strengths to achievesuccess in learning across diverse subjects andenvironments. We exceed behavioral health quality standards todetermine what and how much a student can achieve on ahighly individualized basis. In addition to looking at overallquality of life standards — such as level of independence, vocational participation and opportunity todemonstrate voice and choice — we take into account thestudent’s unique strengths and needs. The wishes of thestudent and family are made a focus of the individualizededucation program (IEP). Further, we collaborate with thestudent’s family and other supports to ensure that he orshe will have the resources needed upon returning to hisor her home community.

A Trauma-Informed ApproachGrafton’s philosophy is one of comfort versus control. We recognizethat students with intellectual disabilities or mental health challengeswill inevitably face frustrating circumstances on a daily basis; thesesituations do not have to be artificially constructed. Rather than seekingto control the student through manipulation or coercion, we monitorbehavior in a natural setting. In this way, we are not forcing potentiallytraumatizing circumstances on the student, but are able to provideappropriate support when obstacles arise during the school day.Monitoring, Measuringand Mastering GoalsGrafton has successfully implemented a formal goalmastery initiative that seeks to assure objectivesestablished for each individual are clearly defined, meaningful and measurable. And what that means canlook very different for each student we serve.Whereas grade-level advancement may be anappropriate goal for one student, such advancementmay not be reasonable for another. At Grafton, wework closely with each individual and family to identifygoals that are appropriately ambitious, based on his orher unique abilities and circumstances.Once set, data for each goal are graphed and formalsystems put in place for review. Changes are made, asthe need indicates, to treatment and instructionalstrategies. Since Grafton’s goal mastery initiative wasimplemented, Grafton has consistently exceeded itstarget goal rate of 80% across the organization.
