Are you tired of having to separately configureyour historian and your automation system? The DeltaV Continuous Historian provides a databasedesigned for historical storage, retrieval, integration intothe DeltaV system, and open access. As a product of Emerson, the DeltaV Continuous Historian was designed to support thePlantweb digital ecosystem and provide a data repository forthe information available in intelligent field devices. The DeltaV Continuous Historian is a vital component of theDeltaV system, fully integrated into configuration, installation, and operation.

DeltaV Continuous HistorianBenefitsFully integrated history configuration and collection:Historical configuration is fully integrated into the DeltaVconfiguration. This simplifies both your initial historyconfiguration and the long-term configuration management ofthe historian. History collection is configured as part of DeltaVmodule configuration using either Control Studio or DeltaVExplorer. The DeltaV Continuous Historian is automaticallyconfigured with the correct tags when the module isdownloaded in the DeltaV system. Once downloaded, theDeltaV Continuous Historian automatically begins historycollection for the configured parameters.Status collection with every value: The DeltaV ContinuousHistorian automatically collects status with every data value. There is no historian licensing impact as the status is anintegral part of the history collection. In the past, status hadto be collected as a separate parameter, meaning separateconfiguration and licensing. Now there is no need to worryabout status collection as the DeltaV Continuous Historiantakes care of this for you.Fully functioning historian on every DeltaV workstation:All DeltaV workstations include a fully functional historian.Capabilities such as data compression and seamlesscommunication over the DeltaV control network to controllersand workstations are built in. You can view historical datacollected locally or on other DeltaV workstations, allowingyou to centralize or decentralize your historical collection.Integrated tools for viewing historical data: Tight integrationwith the rest of the DeltaV system allows data collected byany DeltaV Continuous Historian to be displayed along withassociated alarms and events in a single, easy-to-use interface.Alarms and events are automatically superimposed on theappropriate trend, providing a complete picture ofprocess history.Excel-based reporting and analysis tool: The DeltaVContinuous Historian comes complete with DeltaV Reporter an Excel-based reporting and data analysis tool available onany workstation. Use DeltaV Reporter to populate a spreadsheetwith historical data. Once in the spreadsheet, use the power ofExcel to view, analysis, and create reports on the data.www.emerson.com/deltavAugust 2019Open connectivity using OPC and XML: The DeltaV system isbased on open standards, and the DeltaV Continuous Historianis no exception. External access to the DeltaV ContinuousHistorian is provided in OPC format using the DeltaV OPCHistory Server or in XML format using the DeltaV History WebService. The DeltaV OPC History Server is based on the OPCHistorical Data Access (HDA) standard which is maintained bythe OPC Foundation. The DeltaV History Web Service is basedon Microsoft .Net technology which has become the de factostandard for data exchange over the Internet. The OPC HistoryServer and DeltaV History Web Service provide access to allhistorical data in the DeltaV Continuous Historian database.Historical data available in operator display: Data collectedby any DeltaV Continuous Historian is available for viewing andanalysis as embedded trend displays in DeltaV Live and DeltaVOperate to provide the operator with more information to makeintelligent process decisions.Ability to write history for non-DeltaV data: Designedfor process engineers who need to visualize their nonDeltaV history data concurrently with their DeltaV historydata. The Historical Data Write Interface allows the user toprogrammatically write historical data from external sourcesin a secure and reliable manner.Product DescriptionThe DeltaV Continuous Historian was developed by Emersonto store and retrieve large numbers of process measurementsand their associated status quickly and efficiently. The DeltaVContinuous Historian was built for the DeltaV system to bean integral part of the Plantweb architecture for collectinginformation from intelligent field devices. The DeltaV Continuous Historian was built from the groundup using the latest historian technologies. Since it was builtfor the DeltaV system, it brings a higher level of integrationto automation history. Configuring the parameters that needto be collected by the historian is an integral component of aDeltaV control module. Advanced configuration options includechoosing data compression limits and marking the parameterfor automatic collection by an enterprise historian, such as theEnterprise PI Server from OSIsoft.2

DeltaV Continuous HistorianEach control module, the fundamental building block ofyour control strategy, contains the historical configurationinformation for all module parameters that are being historized. The status of the parameter is automatically collected with thevalue, so no additional configuration is required for status.August 2019When a new module is created, either from the module libraryor an existing module, it includes history configuration, as wellas alarms, display information, etc. Conversely, if a moduleis deleted, the DeltaV Continuous Historian is notified, andparameter collection from that module is suspended.Historical configuration is defined as part of the module in DeltaV Control Studio.www.emerson.com/deltav3

DeltaV Continuous HistorianAugust 2019Configure the DeltaV Continuous Historian database in the DeltaV Explorer.Every DeltaV workstation, including the Application Station, has a 250-parameter DeltaV Continuous Historian as part ofthe standard software suite. The DeltaV Continuous Historianon the Application Station is available in optional sizes—up to30,000 additional parameters per Application Station. The DeltaV Continuous Historian on the other DeltaVworkstations, e.g. Operator Station and ProfessionalPLUSStation, can be scaled-up to 3,250 parameters per workstation.Multiple DeltaV Continuous Historians are supported in asingle DeltaV system. History for a specific parameter canbe collected on multiple workstations, providing historicalbackup capability.Configuration of the DeltaV Continuous Historian includesenabling the historian for use on the DeltaV workstation andconfiguring the size of the database, the size of the historicaldata sets, and automatic data set export behavior. The DeltaVIn the DeltaV Explorer, simply drag and drop plant areasonto any historian to choose where data collection forthose areas will occur. Once the workstation is downloaded, communications and history collection will begin automatically.www.emerson.com/deltav4

DeltaV Continuous HistorianAugust 2019Management of the DeltaV Continuous Historian database is easy through the Administration utility.Continuous Historian database configuration determines theamount of on-line data available and may be time-or-sizedbased. When the database reaches it maximum size, theautomatic export feature grabs the oldest data set and sendsit to a user-defined storage location. The DeltaV Continuous Historian Administration utilityprovides makes it easy to manage the historian database. An Administration utility is provided on every DeltaVworkstation. The Administration utility enables you to backup, restore, and export the datasets, create new Active andExtended data sets, and view the properties of each dataset, including their backup status. The DeltaV Continuous Historian includes three types ofhistorical data sets: Active, Current, and Extended. The Activeand Current data sets represent the on-line data that is residentin the database. There is only one Active data set, as it is thedata set that is currently receiving new historical data, but therecan be multiple Current data sets. Current data sets are createdautomatically when the Active data set reaches its configuredwww.emerson.com/deltavsize or time limit. New Current data sets may also be createdmanually through the Administration utility or automaticallyusing the automated backup utility. When the DeltaVContinuous Historian database reaches its configured size ortime limit, the oldest Current data set is either exported or overwritten, depending on the configured export behavior. An Extended data set is a data set that has been exportedfrom the database and then brought back on-line. The datain the Extended data set can be viewed by any of the DeltaVContinuous Historian client applications, but the Extended dataset does not count against the maximum database size or timelimit. There can be any number of Extended data sets in theDeltaV Continuous Historian, limited only by the physical spaceavailable on the DeltaV workstation’s hard disk drive.Programmatic administration of the DeltaV ContinuousHistorian is available using the automated backup utility. Theautomated backup utility enables you to back up the Active,Current and Extended data sets, create a new Active data set,and delete off-line data sets that are no longer required. Theautomated backup utility also provides options to backup updata sets based on time or based on whether they have beenmodified since the last backup.5

DeltaV Continuous HistorianAugust 2019View DeltaV Continuous Historian data along with corresponding alarms and events in Process History View.Process History View is used to display data values and statuscollected by any DeltaV Continuous Historian. Users have theoption to build custom trend charts by selecting individualparameters to display, or they can launch historical trendsautomatically from a module’s faceplate in DeltaV Live orDeltaV Operate.Either way, status information and alarm and event datacollected by the DeltaV system is embedded in the trend toprovide a more accurate and thorough historical picture andenable better decision making.www.emerson.com/deltavThe DeltaV Version Control and Audit Trail (VCAT) captures allchanges made to the DeltaV Continuous Historian. There are noother mechanisms available to add, modify, or delete historicaldata configuration or the historical data itself. The capabilities of VCAT to capture historical collectionconfiguration changes, combined with common industry SOPs(Standard Operating Procedures), allow you to comply with the21 CFR Part 11 regulations.6

DeltaV Continuous HistorianAugust 2019DeltaV Reporter integrates historical process and alarm and event data.DeltaV Reporter, the MS-Excel based reporting and analysistool, provides an easy way to get historical data into an Excelspreadsheet. DeltaV Reporter is available for use on a DeltaVworkstation or any non-DeltaV workstation that has networkconnectivity to a DeltaV Continuous Historian. The historicaldata provided to the spreadsheet includes the time/date stamp, value, and status. DeltaV Reporter includes dialogs to assistin the building of queries for retrieving data from the DeltaVContinuous Historian. A DeltaV Continuous Historian specificbrowser with wildcard filtering capability is available to helplocate the historical data required. The data available from theDeltaV Continuous Historian for display in the spreadsheetincludes raw data, interpolated data, or calculated(aggregate) data.www.emerson.com/deltavThe DeltaV OPC History Server provides an OPC FoundationHDA interface to the DeltaV DeltaV Continuous Historian basedon Microsoft’s OLE/COM technology. The OPC HDA interfacespecification defines Microsoft COM interfaces (custom andautomation) to access the historical process data in the DeltaVDeltaV Continuous Historian. The DeltaV History Web Service provides a set of web methodsthat client applications can use to interact with the DeltaVContinuous Historian. Historical process data may be returnedto the client application in XML or ADO Dataset format.7

DeltaV Continuous HistorianAugust 2019Embedded trend charts providehistorical and real-time data inDeltaV Live.Trend Charts in DeltaV Live provide real-time and historical data.DeltaV Live and DeltaV Operate, the DeltaV operator interfaceapplications, provide the ability to embed trend charts into theoperator graphic displays. The embedded trend charts displayhistorical and real-time data in the same trend chart. Historicaldata may come from any DeltaV Continuous Historian inthe system.Operators can interact with the trends by scrolling forward andbackwards, zooming in and out, increase and decrease the timespan, and launch Process History View. In addition, they canrestore the chart to configured values, view a snapshot of thedata, view the data collection status, and turn the embeddedchart legend on and off.Embedded trends are configured using Graphics Studio forDeltaV Live and DeltaV Operate Configure Mode for DeltaVOperate. In DeltaV Live, the embedded chart uses a new trendobject, based on Process History View, but with more featuresavailable to users. Each embedded trend can contain up to10 pens and resolves automatically the available historian inthe system, or can be pointed to a specific DeltaV ContinuousHistorian. In DeltaV Operate, the embedded trend chart usesthe same trend object as Process History View optimized for usein DeltaV Operate, so the configuration environment iswell known. Each embedded trend, in DeltaV Operate, cancontain up to 8 pens and can connect to a different DeltaVContinuous Historian.DeltaV Live and DeltaV Operate also include an easy trendbuilding function called Chart Builder. Chart Builder facilitatescreating up to 6 Process History View trend charts by simplyselecting an object on the DeltaV Live or DeltaV Operatedisplay. Once the object is selected, the trend chart is openedand populated with real-time data for the object and if theobject is configured for history collection, historical data for theobject is also displayed. For example, if you have a selectabledatalink on a DeltaV Live or DeltaV Operate display, select theChart Builder function from its contextual menu, then selectthe datalink to open a Process History View trend chart with thereal-time and historical data for the datalink.Any number of embedded trend charts can be configured in theoperator graphics, subject to the size of the embedded trendchart, the space available on the display and a maximum of 160pens per display in total.www.emerson.com/deltav8
