AS WE GATHER Christ’s call to faithfulness costs more than we think andindeed includes taking up our cross and following Him. Assured of His divineprotection and salvation, we are able, with the strength of the Holy Spirit, to offerourselves as living sacrifices. The way of the cross ultimately leads to the crown oflife in heaven. Our prayer today as we count the cost of following Jesus each day is,“Here I am Lord, send me.”PRELUDEWELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTST T PREPARATION T TPROCESSIONAL HYMN “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus” LSB 660Stand up, stand up for Jesus, Ye soldiers of the cross.Lift high His royal banner; It must not suffer loss. From vict’ry unto vict’ry His army He shall leadTill ev’ry foe is vanquished, And Christ is Lord indeed.Stand up, stand up for Jesus; The trumpet call obey;Stand forth in mighty conflict In this His glorious day.Let all His faithful serve Him Against unnumbered foes;Let courage rise with danger And strength to strength oppose.Stand up, stand up for Jesus; Stand in His strength alone. The arm of flesh will fail you, Ye dare not trust your own.Put on the Gospel armor; Each piece put on with prayer.Where duty calls or danger, Be never wanting there.Stand up, stand up for Jesus; The strife will not be long; This day the din of battle, The next the victor’s song. The soldiers, overcoming, Their crown of life shall seeAnd with the King of Glory Shall reign eternally.Public domainINVOCATIONP: In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.C: Amen.3

CONFESSION and ABSOLUTIONP: Our help is in the name of the Lord,C: who made heaven and earthP: Since we are assembled to hear God’s Word, to call upon Him in prayer, and toreceive the body and blood of Christ, let us think of our unworthiness, confessbefore God that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and realize also thatby our own strength we cannot free ourselves from our sinful nature. Therefore wetake refuge in His infinite mercy, seeking and imploring His grace for the sake ofour Lord Jesus Christ and say: God be merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.C: May almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us toeverlasting life. AmenP: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His onlySon to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To them that believe inHis name He gives the power to become the children of God and has promisedthem His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. As a calledand ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I proclaim your sins areforgiven in the name of the Father, and of the T Son, and of the Holy Spirit.C: AmenT T SERVICE OF THE WORD T THYMN OF PRAISE LSB 475 vv. 1,3,4Good Christian friends, rejoice and sing! cross and follow Him wherever He leads, Who lives and reigns with You and theHoly Spirit, one God, now and forever.C: Amen.OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 6:1-8 (Isaiah’s commission.)1In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high andlifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is theLord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” 4And the foundations of thethresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.5And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell inthe midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord ofhosts!” 6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal thathe had taken with tongs from the altar. 7And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.” 8And Iheard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”P: This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.EPISTLE Romans 12:1-8 (Living sacrifices)1I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as aliving sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2Do notbe conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that bytesting you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable andperfect. 3For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think ofhimself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, eachaccording to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4For as in one body we havemany members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5so we, thoughmany, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6Having giftsthat differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, inproportion to our faith; 7if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in histeaching; 8the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, ingenerosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, withcheerfulness.P: This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.5

VERSE LW 371 v.4When dangers gather round, Oh, keep me calm and fearless;Help me to bear the cross When life seems dark and cheerless;Help me, as You have taught, To love both great and smallAnd by Your Spirit’s might To live at peace with all.HOLY GOSPEL Luke 9:57-62 (The cost of following Jesus.)P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the ninth chapter.C: Glory to You, O Lord.57As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow youwherever you go.” 58And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the airhave nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59To another he said,“Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60And Jesus saidto him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim thekingdom of God.” 61Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first sayfarewell to those at my home.” 62Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to theplow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to You, O Christ.CHILDREN’S MESSAGEHYMN OF THE DAY “Hark, the Voice of Jesus Crying” LSB 826Hark, the voice of Jesus crying, “Who will go and work today?Fields are white and harvests waiting— Who will bear the sheaves away?”Loud and long the Master calleth; Rich reward He offers thee.Who will answer, gladly saying, “Here am I, send me, send me”?If you cannot speak like angels, If you cannot preach like Paul,You can tell the love of Jesus, You can say He died for all.If you cannot rouse the wicked With the judgment’s dread alarms,You can lead the little children To the Savior’s waiting arms.If you cannot be a watchman, Standing high on Zion’s wall,Pointing out the path to heaven, Off’ring life and peace to all,With your prayers and with your bounties You can do what God commands; You can be like faithful Aaron, Holding up the prophet’s hands.6

Let none hear you idly saying, “There is nothing I can do,”While the multitudes are dying And the Master calls for you.Take the task He gives you gladly, Let His work your pleasure be;Answer quickly when He calleth, “Here am I, send me, send me!”Public domainSERMONAPOSTLES’ CREEDI believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And inJesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit bornof the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and wasburied. He descended into hell. I believe in the HolySpirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness ofsins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,First and foremost I want to once again thank you foryour generous donation to the Tornado Relief Fund ofHoly Trinity Lutheran Church. When you first madeyour donation I told you I would send you an updateon the progress of recovery in Bowling Green. It hasbeen six months since the tornados devastated ourcommunity. I am thrilled to tell you that we are on theway to recovery. Your generous gifts have made it possible for us to help over 300 families in the communitywith everything from food to a new roof. We have received 144,775 in cash, gift cards and tools. To datewe have distributed 127,641 of that amount. The veryfirst person I helped the day of the tornado was ayoung woman about 6 months pregnant. She and hertornado baby boy came to see me a few weeks back.We have been able to witness the love of Christ tofamilies of all backgrounds, especially many BosnianMuslim families. There is quite a bit of constructiongoing on but there is still so much to do. God bless allof you for your generous giving and your amazing lovefor all God’s children.Rev. Andy Toopes16
