MartyBlessed Pentecost to everyone. It has been 50 days since Jesus rose from the dead and 10 days since heascended into heaven, and today we have the wonderful Pentecost event where Christ’s promise to sendan advocate to the disciples is fulfilled. Come, Holy Spirit, come. If we stop at Pentecost or start atPentecost, we do the Holy Spirit a disservice. As we read in the sacred Scriptures from the creation of theworld the Spirit is present. In the creation story, the Spirit came to the waters, and life was formed; at theannunciation, the Spirit came upon Mary; at the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan the Spirit came to Jesus;etc. As you can see the Holy Spirit has always been present throughout all of sacred history. I think it fallsto the old saying that many of us have heard: “Out of sight, out of mind.” So today we have a little change,or maybe I should say, a big change, the Holy Spirit does not come upon Jesus or Mary, but today theSpirit comes upon us. The breath of God “ruah” is breathed upon us, as Luke says today in our readings, and we are changed. There are seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and one I feel is most misunderstood is thefear of the Lord. I think our understanding of “fear” has changed or at least hardened throughouttime. The fear of the Lord is not saying that we need to be afraid of the Lord, which I feel many peoplethink it means, rather the fear of the Lord is giving God the utmost respect, and not wanting to offendsomeone you love and who loves you infinitely. Christ in himself gifted us with His Spirit, not to becomfortable and know we have a great gift, but driven to want to share a great gift with everyone. The giftthat we try to share with everyone is what the disciples received already from Christ, an understanding ofthe love of the Father and Son that we may share with all those we meet. That calls us to be more gentleand kind like Christ revealed to us in his life here on earth so that we may better understand where God isleading us today. So, I would suggest that you get your tennis shoes on for God is impelling us to leaveour comfort zone and take God to the rest of the world.AmenContact & Livestreaming Information518 State St., Grand Island, NE 68801308-384-0532Emergencies Only: 308-249-0009Website: blsachurch.net E-Mail: bscc 1@msn.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/blessedsacramentA link to Livestream Mass will be on Facebook at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
