The Power of Cromford Mills: Winster CE Primary SchoolThe whole of Winster Primary School visitedCromford, where we had a tour of thewaterwheels and explanations of how the millswere powered. We were also the first children tovisit the new Richard Arkwright audio visualexperience! We highly recommend you pay a visit.Following our visit, the older children wrotedescriptions of what they could imagine theworking mills to be like. Have a read and seeif you can picture it in your mind The mill has clanking machinery and the childrenare like ants compared to the massive machines. It stinks of blacksoot and it feels like smooth scales on a shiny metal car. SMASH!There goes a giant machine breaking down. Every now and again, some of the children get crushed by the big monstrous machines.Written by Alfie Clarke and Bethany EdwardsI could hear the never‐ending racket from a mile away. Today wasthe day that I started working in the mill. An horrendous, huge beastof a building towering above our puny bodies. We were tiny flies inRichard Arkwright’s trap. Bang! Crash! Smash! The monumentalwaterwheel has broken and fell of its humongous axis! It yelped as itdropped into the river below. I could taste the disgusting thickclouds of smoke as they filled my lungs.Written by Obi Roper, Ben Webster, Kiera RoperDon’t need a paper copy? Microchipping Dogs becomes Compulsory from AprilDerbyshire Dales District Council is reminding people that, under new nationallegal regulations, pet dogs must be microchipped from April 6 2016 andregistered on an approved database with their keeper's up‐to‐date contactdetails. Microchipping was previously optional but, with some exceptions, will soon becompulsory for all dogs aged over eight weeks. This new duty on keepers aims to speed up the return of stray dogs, deter theft, help vetscontact owners in emergency situations and aid identification of owners in cases of animalcruelty. Microchips, which must contain the keeper's up‐to‐date contact details, can beimplanted at a number of places, including veterinary practices, some pet shops and somedog‐grooming salons. Some animal welfare charities also offer services. Prices vary.Over the next few weeks, the District Council will be raising awareness through thedistribution of leaflets, throughout the District. From April 6, if the District council picks up a stray dog which is not microchipped, or ismicrochipped but does not have up‐to‐date details, the animal's keeper, if traceable, willreceive a notice requiring them to comply with the regulations within 21 days. If the keeperfails to comply, they can be prosecuted. For more information about compulsory microchipping, visit the Dogs Trust website.Pet Microchipping Service 10From April 6th 2016 all dogs are required by law to bemicrochipped. We are fully qualified to microchip: DOGS, CATS,FERRETS and RABBITS.We are on average 5 cheaper than all veterinarianseven with their OFFERS and PROMOTIONS.No unnecessary trips to the vets. (Strange) Stories from the PeakSaturday 26 June 1897EXTRAORDINARY CAPTURE AT WINSTER: A TOMCAT WITH WINGSThe most interesting item in natural history, so far as the Matlock district isconcerned, transpired this morning (Friday). Our reporter learns that Mr Roperof Winster, while on Brown Edge near that village, shot what he thought to be afox, which had been seen in the locality some time previously, on Mr Foxlow’sland. Thinking he had missed his aim, Mr Roper gave up the quest, butreturning later he found he had killed the animal. It proved to be anextraordinarily large tomcat, tortoiseshell in colour with fur two and a halfinches [5cm] long, with the remarkable addition of fully-grown pheasant wingsprojecting from each side of its fourth rib.Unfortunately, the climate having been so excessively hot, the animal wasallowed to putrefy, and after being generally exhibited all round the district thecarcase has now been interred. It was seen by Mr Joseph Hardy and amplewitnesses, so that there is no doubt the museums have missed a mostcurious animal. Never has its like been seen before, and eye-witnesses state thatwhen running the animal used its wings outstretched to help it over the surfaceof the ground, which it covered at a tremendous pace.Source: High Peak NewsDo you know a (strange) local story? Winster Writers: An evening of Poetry and ProseWe hope you have made a note in your diary about our evening celebratinglocal Winster writing on 5th April at the Bowling Green Inn.It will be compered by Rod Shiers and writers' work will be read by localactors. There will be music from the Steve Salfield Trio and Keith Kendrickand Sylvia Needham. Doors open at 7pm and tickets cost 5 at the door.Meanwhile here's something to whet your literary appetite:Sitting Room Elegyby David JonesLate afternoon the sun will reappearand shine on the rug where the dog would always lie, bathing the bones of the crumpled evening chair, while drifting memories float in suspended time.Book-spines a catalogue of half-forgotten lives, echoed by the old LPs. Remotes on the table, basking electronic crocodiles, are waiting to snap up the rest of the day.I might prolong this lingering thoughtfulness, but there on the wall are my sepia family, framed in their sack-heavy Sunday bestI feel they’re always looking down on mesitting and dreaming, at five in the afternoon, that children and the dog might be here too.Easter Fun Activities! The Easter holidays are upon us and there are lots of activities forchildren across Derbyshire. The National Trust is once again run‐ning its popular Easter Egg hunts at Kedleston Hall, Calke Abbey,Sudbury Hall and Ilam Park. The much loved children’s classic“The Curious Adventures of Pinocchio” is bought to Guildhall Theatre at Derbyon the 26th March. On the 26th and 27th March at Cromford Mills there arelots of activities including meet the chicks and bunnies, Alice in WonderlandMask Making, Giant Games, White Rabbit Egg Trail and a Climbing Wall.16

FEEL CONFIDENT WITH A DERBYSHIRE TRUSTED TRADERFinding a company that you can trust to do some work for you can be a bitdaunting – how can you be sure that you won’t get ripped off? What if thingsgo wrong? How do you choose between lots of different companies? These sorts of dilemmas were a driving force behind the setting up by Derbyshire County Councilof the Trusted Trader scheme. It helps local people to find traders and businesses that do a good jobat a fair price and provide good customer service since 2008. These days there are nearly 17,000searches each month on the Trusted Trader website, www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt by people lookingfor reliable companies to use. Another ringing endorsement for the scheme was a recent surveywhich gathered feedback from more than 16,000 people who had used one or more of the 1,200Trusted Traders. An impressive 94% said they were very satisfied with the service they received. In case of problems, Derbyshire County Council trading standards officers can get involved in anyqueries involving Trusted Traders and seek to resolve them. The scheme particularly helps toprotect older and vulnerable adults by making it easier for them to use Trusted Traders rather thanrogue traders who typically cold‐call and use high pressure sales techniques.A recent development has been the inclusion of Financial Advisors who specialise in providingfinancial advice for people in later life and can help with matters like care fees, pensions andinvestments. Find out more at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt or call 01629 536148.Enquiries are also welcome from businesses interested in signing up to the scheme – membershipbrings lots of benefits and costs only 70 ‐ 100 per year.Reader’s Letters continued. Dog Fouling at East Bank16.03.2016For many years I have endured the strip of grass next to my housebeing used as a dog toilet. And for as many years I have hopedthe problem would go away. However it has not gone away, in factit has recently become considerably worse. On the photographaccompanying this letter taken on Friday 9th March, which can beverified by three neighbours, there were 20 separate depositsbetween one and four meters of my entrances. In the last month Ihave had two deposits in my yard conveniently placed to stand inwhen someone steps out of a car. One of these did find itself on someone’s shoe and then to my kitchenfloor. It is difficult even at this time of the year trying not to stand on this disgusting mess when trying togain access to my property. Imagine what it's like in the summer when the grass is long.I realise I am not the only person in Winster suffering from this nuisance. Try walking on the Croft afterdark! I am sure by the time this letter is published many people will have seen, or have been informedabout the CCTV camera which I have installed as a last resort overlooking this area. It isn't my intentionto start a witch hunt against dogs and their owners, and I fully appreciate that dogs can escape, and thereis bound to be the odd accident. But, any CCTV footage of persistent offenders blatantly disregarding thelaw will be presented to the Parish Council, and or Derbyshire Dales District Council and they will takeany action they deem appropriate.John Francis, The Anchorage, East Bank17

Councillor’s CornerCouncil TaxAt the Council’s budget meeting in March, members unanimously voted to increasecouncil tax by 1.95%. After 5 years without an increase, the council no longer gets agovernment grant for freezing council tax.Nobody wants to put up council tax, but without this additional grant funding, members were left no option but to propose an increase. The level of council tax setfor the coming year ensures that no major services will be lost.Contacting meI would like to take this opportunity to make a small request.I am always happy to help local residents with issues that they might have. Can I please ask, however, that you contact me about any council related concernsusing my email and telephone number below.I appreciate it is easy and convenient to bring these issues to my attention whenvisiting Winster Shop, but the number of complaints I get at work is increasing. This is a distraction in the shop and takes up valuable time in the working day.Furthermore, speaking to me outside working hours means I can take more time totalk with you and deal with your problem more effectively.Thank youColinDistrict CouncillorEmail: colin.swindell@derbyshiredales.gov.ukMobile: 07816 986 956Continued from Front Page.Women's Tour of Britain is coming through Winster! The detailed street level route has not yet been released, but further detailswill be available on the website byshire Dales District Council will be providing more information to ParishCouncils, schools and other local organisations and encouraging celebrationsto welcome the Tour, such as themed events, decorated shop windows, flags& bunting etc.In the meantime, get the date in your diaries and put your thinking caps on sothat Winster can give a big warm welcome to the Tour!Ros Hession ros.hession@hotmail.co.uk19

Vicar’s Letter for MarchOn the 1st April 1578 William Harvey died. You may well be thinking whois William Harvey? He was a doctor in London who was recognised as being the first to discover that blood circulates around the body, pumped bythe beat of the heart. As we are in Eastertide maybe it is a good time to remember the Bloodwhich pumped through the heart of Jesus. Jesus’ heart was pounding forlove of all humanity. He went through His passion for each of us and hegave his blood for each of us. Now he has gone through death, throughbrokenness and through his dark night. Now he comes into the light. Nowhe reminds us all from the place of Glory next to His Father - he remindsus that we are loved. In our frantic world we need to take a breath and slow down and enjoy thelives we have. Enjoy our loved ones; enjoy music and film; enjoy hobbiesand work. Basically, enjoy life. That is what it means to be an ‘EasterPeople’ - we may not have perfect lives, but we have blessed lives. Wehave a freedom which comes from being the children of God.This Eastertide may we all slow down. May we count our blessings, maywe love and laugh and may we remember that Jesus God and Man lived, died and rose again to remind all of us that we are loved. And when we gothrough our own private ‘dark nights’, when we are in sorrow; let usremember that in the end all shall be well for Jesus has risen, he has risenindeed, Alleluia!!!Wishing you and all those you love a very Blessed and Happy Easter. With Kind Regards and every prayer.Rev'd Stephen Monk(Rector Darley Dale, South Darley & Winster.)Church Services1st Sunday 9.00am Holy CommunionSecond Sunday of the month 9.30am Holy Communion3rd & 4th Sunday 9.00am Holy CommunionPlanning application received since last monthNP/DDD/0216/01484 Anson Row East Bank WinsterListed Building consent - retrospective listed building consent21
