Dental AssistingASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE or CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENTThe program requires 32 semester units in Dental Assisting,plus 9 semester units in other general education requiredcourses; for a total of 41 units. Students completing allrequired courses with a minimum grade point averageof 2.0 (ā€œCā€) will earn a Certificate of Achievement andbe qualified to take the Certification Examination of theDental Assisting National Board (DANB) and the Stateof California RDA examinations; and will be prepared toassume the responsibilities of assisting the dentist in allphases of general and specialty practice.The AS degree in Dental Assisting will be awarded uponsatisfactory completion of the Major Course Requirementsand the General Education requirements. A Certificate ofAchievement will be awarded upon satisfactory completionof the Major Course Requirements.Career OpportunitiesThis full-time curriculum is designed to meet the requirements of the American Dental Association Council onDental Education for Dental Assistants. The programincludes lecture and laboratory practice in the classroom.Clinical experience is required in the dental clinics of theUniversity of California and the University of Pacific DentalSchools in San Francisco, as well as in private dentaloffices. Students completing all required courses with aminimum grade of 75% C or better grade will earn aCertificate of Achievement and be qualified to take theCertification Examination of the DANB, the State of California RDA examinations, and will be prepared to assumethe responsibilities of assisting the dentist in all phases ofgeneral practice. The program requires 28.5 semester unitsin Dental Assisting, plus 9 semester units in other generaleducation required courses.Eligibility/Admission/Prerequisite andDegree/Certificate Requirements are asfollows:1. Completion of all Dental Assisting courses with a gradeof 2.0 (ā€œCā€) or better.2. Possession of a high school diploma or the equivalentis required prior to application to and admission intothe program.3. Official transcripts must be on file in the Admissionsand Records Office prior to program application.4. Completion of HLTED 9 (2 units), First Aid and Safety;and HLTED 11, CPR (.5 units); OR possession of currentcards from an approved provider are required prior toenrollment in the program.D ental A ssistingThe Dental Assisting Program is designed to meet therequirements of the American Dental Association Councilon Dental Education for Dental Assistants. The programincludes lecture and laboratory practice in the classroom.As part of their field experience, students are required toparticipate in internships in private offices and at the UCSFDental School.5. Physical and dental examinations, and negative TB andhepatitis test results are required to be submitted tothe Dental Assisting Department prior to enrollmentin the program.6. It is highly recommended (but not required) that thefollowing be completed prior to admission into theprogram and enrollment in Fall term courses: DENTL251, Dental Terminology and CIS 205, ComputerLiteracy.Program Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this program a student will be able to: Apply critical thinking to all aspects of the dental field. Communicate in written and verbal form according toterminology of the dental field. Demonstrate knowledge of cultural sensitivity withinthe field of dental assisting. Demonstrate self discipline to pursue intellectualcuriosities with integrity in both personal and professional lives.Admission is by special application directly to the DentalAssisting Department. The application deadline is April15 of each year for admission into the program startingthe following fall semester. The Dental Assisting Programis allowed to take up to 24 students each fall semesterper CODA regulations. All completed applications will beplaced in a lottery after the applicant has attended the firstmandatory orientation. After the first 24 eligible applicantshave been selected, all other applicants will be placed ona wait-list and informed in writing of any openings. Applicants will be notified by mail of acceptance into the DentalAssisting program.
