A IntroductionCybercrime is a professionalized business, and cybercriminalsa 15% chance of encountering malware, up from 11% theare constantly looking for new and effective ways to attackprevious year. Businesses generally often have more layerspeople around the world.of protection in place than home users, making them lesslikely to encountering malware. A plausible explanation forIn 2019, Avast observed Swiss army-like malware, which isthe increase in risk is a growth in the number of attacks asmodular malware capable of carrying out various types ofcybercrime continues to be profitable.attacks, rather than just one. Cybercriminals often do notdiscriminate between targets and simply carry out mass attacksWith over 400 million of users worldwide, Avast has one of theto reach as many potential victims as possible, with manylargest threat detection networks in the cybersecurity industry.people simply affected as collateral damage from a blanketThe attacks on these devices provide valuable insightsattack. A IntroductionCyberthreats are not all the same, but for simplicity, in thisreport we group the threats into two high level categories:simple threats and advanced threats.Simple ThreatsSimple threats are malware often produced by script kiddiesthat do not contain advanced packers, anti-emulationfeatures, and other types of self protection.Advanced ThreatsAdvanced threats include malware spread by nation states, malware with custom packers and hardcore anti-emulationfeatures. These often come from criminal groups that focus onsuccessful infection rates, making sure that the malware theycreate circumvents most security solutions users have in place. We define these more sophisticated threats as advancedthreats. Advanced threats are new, not yet before seenMethodologyThe data included in this report is collected from Avast’s threatdetection network, and represents the threats from whichAvast protected its PC users between September 8, 2019and October 7, 2019. In order to provide statistically relevantdata, this report includes data from countries, territories andregions with a sample size of at least 10,000 computersbelonging to home users that encountered threats during themonth we collected the data, and at least 1,000 computersused by businesses. The data looks at total threats andadvanced threats, evaluating the risk ratio for home andbusiness users around the world. To calculate the risk ratios for this report, we divided thenumber of computers where Avast’s protection layersstopped at least one threat, by the total number of computersAvast actively protected within the 30-day period.threats, designed to bypass common protection technologiesincluded in security software, such as signatures, heuristics, emulators, URL filtering, mail scanning, etc.Avast Global PC Risk Report 2020 Contents4

B Global Risk RatioAccording to our data, the worldwide chance of infection fromThe difference in the risk ratio between home and businessany type of malware - this includes simple and advancedusers is most likely due to the fact that businesses often havethreats - for a business computer is 15% (11% in the previousadditional security layers in place, blocking threats beforeyear). Home users, on the other hand, are at more risk ofthey even enter a business’ network, set up by dedicatedencountering all types of malware, with a 26% chance ofIT teams or external IT administration partners.
