THE BELK EXPERIENCEThe John M. Belk Scholarship provides scholars with access to a rich diversity of experience. Scholars have greatfexibility in the on- and off-campus opportunities they choose to explore. Those experiences, paired with Davidson’sacademic programs, deepen the scholars’ insight, maturity, and understanding of global issues.The Belk Scholarship provides each scholar with two 3,000 special study stipends to support intellectual, personal,and leadership development over the course of their college careers. In recent years, Belk Scholars have used theirstipends to explore their passions in this country and abroad. Belk, Davidson Class of 1943, continued afamily tradition that began with the earliest Belkfamily graduates in 1847. At Davidson, he earneda record of leadership and accomplishmentthat foreshadowed his extraordinary career andcommitment to service. After serving in WWII andthe Korean War and time as an offcer of the UnitedNations Civil Assistance Commission, Belk returned tothe family business in 1952, leading it to become oneof the nation’s largest and most proftable retailers.John Belk dedicated himself to his community and,as mayor of Charlotte for four terms (1969 to 1977),positioned the city to become the nation’s secondlargest banking center and one of the country’sfastest growing cities. In 2000, John Belk made anhistoric gift to endow the John M. Belk fagshipscholarship program at Davidson.As President and Board Chair of the John M. BelkEndowment, MC Belk Pilon continues her late father’slegacy of leadership and vision. She and her team arecommitted to increasing access to and completionof post-secondary education in order to give allNorth Carolinians the chance at long-term, familysustaining careers. MC also serves the community inmyriad other ways, serving on boards that championeducation access such as myFutureNC, Inc.; TheBelk Foundation; College Advising Corps; CharlotteMecklenburg Community Foundation; and CharlotteCountry Day School. In 2016, Pilon was awarded theRoanoke College Medal, the highest honor accorded agraduate; and in 2015, received the Central PiedmontCommunity College Distinguished Service Award.
