FR. TOM HERON’S WEEKLY REFLECTIONThe trial of Jesus before Pilate is a dramatic scene. Thereligious authorities are frightened by Jesus’ growingpopularity. He was upsetting everything they held dear.So they conspired to have Him stopped. They bound Himup and presented Him to Pilate.Pilate was frustrated at Jesus’ refusal to give him directanswers to his questions. Pilate was a superstitious man,as well. His wife had a dream: have nothing to do with this man. He didn’t know what to do; but he didn’twant to tempt fate either.Pilate, in the end, was a weak man; but clever, too, a politician to the hilt. He offered the people acompromise — Barabbas or Jesus - the insurgent terrorist or the preacher-healer from Nazareth!“Give us Barabbas!” This cry echoes through the ages. It is as meaningful today as it was then. What werethey thinking, we might ask, to reject the Son of God and to accept this murderer, this insurgent? Thesimple answer is, they were not thinking. They were a mob. Mobs, by their very nature, do not think. Theysimply react. It was difficult for the worried, frightened Pilate to go against the crowd. So he gave them Barabbas andwashed his hands of Jesus of Nazareth.“Give us Barabbas”—the cry, as I said, that still echoes through the ages. It’s the cry many still shout todaywhen they are not willing to stand for the truth, afraid of what others will think, fearful of being left out ifthey don’t go along with what the crowd, the unthinking crowd, wants.“Give us Barabbas!” The cry of the mob. The cry of those who long for quick, simple solutions to theirproblems. The cry of those who would rather please the crowd than wear a crown. We’ve all been there. We know the temptation. We’re only human—like the Gospel mob was when theyturned Pilate’s offer on its head and chose a murderer over the Messiah, the insurgent terrorist over theSavior. What would it mean today if you and I were to declare from our hearts not “Give me Barabbas,” but “Giveme Jesus Christ”? What would it mean?It would mean that we will seek to honor Christ in all our activities, that with God’s grace we will say ordo nothing- nothing that would bring dishonor to the name “Christian.”It would mean that we would no longer be influenced by a mob, free to stand for the truth. Holy Week! Agood time to ask where we really stand with regard to the Cross of Christ.“Give us Barabbas!” We are confronted with a choice. Pilate faced the choice and tried to wash his handsof it. It never works. His failure of nerve caused him to free Barabbas and crucify Jesus. What a sadresponse in his time of testing. There’s a little book: Letters from Hell. Pilate is there bending over a stream of water, washing his hands.Someone touches him on the shoulder and asks, “Will they never be clean?” With a loud shriek of agonythat rang throughout hell, Pilate cried: “No! They will never be clean!”And they won’t. There is no middle ground. Sooner or later we all have to commit ourselves, to make achoice. Will it be Barabbas, or Jesus the Christ?#244 page 6
