WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE? RESUME TIPSWritten by: Nicole Niemeyer, MBA, CPRWCheck out these examples below. What is the first thing you notice about someone? Is it their personality? Their beliefs? No,you notice how they look. Do they have an inviting smile? Is their hairstyle out of date? Wheredid they get those great jeans?! Be honest, youapproach people that look approachable, usuallysomeone that has some visible trait that you canrelate to. This is also true with recruiters. TRAVEL WITH UNOH!Come Away With Us!Are you interested in traveling to France andAmsterdam in May? Join your fellow racersto see the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre,Montemarte, Paris, and so much more. Then take a high-speed train to expereinceAmsterdam for a couple days before headinghome! When a company posts a job opening online, inthe paper, or the opening just spreads by wordof mouth and the resumes come flying in by the100’s, the first thing the recruiter notices is theresume’s visual impact. Today resumes needto be filled with facts, accomplishments, skillsand responsibilities, but they also need to beshowcased in a manner that is easy to read and isappealing to the eye.Dates: May 14, 2018 - May 20, 2018 Payment Plans Available 50 to EnrollQuestions? Contact Dr. Lisa Clark, Dean ofOnline Programs at lclark@unoh.eduEnrollment Deadline is January 31, 2018!I don’t want to downplay content. The contentof a resume is very important, but your resumeis not going to get read unless it is clear, concise, and aptly sectioned with titles. We were taughtthat a one page resume is very important. Thatis no longer true, even for students just graduating. Young people today are so plugged in andinvolved in every club, sport, and extracurricularactivity known to man that it is hard for eventhe youngest applicant to keep it to one page.If you have a lot of valid information make sureit is sectioned and the section has a title (i.e.Accomplishments, Education History, Affiliations,Volunteer Experience, etc.). This de-clutters thepage. This also may be the reason you have togo onto a second page. A resume is an attentiongetter; you fill in the stories at the interview. What I mean by this is that a resume should notbe written like a book, but like a marketing ad.Some people think that the more bullet points aperson has on a resume the more important theperson. Not so. When your resume has too manybullets on it, it is hard to pick out the most important points. Limit bullets to things a recruiteris going to want to see first. This way they almostjump off the page.On the other hand, some people don’t have anybulleted points at all and they drag on with longparagraph, after long paragraph. This is what Imean by writing a resume like a book. You needto grab their attention to get them on the hook.Once on the hook the employer will want to findout more about the applicant, and to do this theywill have to call the applicant in for the interview!Use bold, italic and underline text to make headings stick out. I use these aspects often especially in the Experience section to highlight theEmployer and the Position held. These are thingsa recruiter finds important and should jump offthe page. Also use the position or industry you are in as atool on your resume. A good example of this isfor someone in the art industry or digital mediaindustry. For someone applying for a graphicdesigner position, add a visual touch includinga design you made or some type of graphic thatrepresents you. Don’t make it look cartoonish, but add flare! Make it your own. No one is goingto market you like you can so use your resources.WINTER QUARTER 2018The first example has no separation in sections, the font is all the same size and there are no keywords that are in bold or italic. Also notice allthe bullet points. It is very hard to pick out theimportant points when almost everything is bulleted. It looks crowded and very busy. It is hard tofind things because it is so cluttered. Now look at the second example. It has definedsections, flows nicely and is easy to read and findinformation. There is only a small section that isbulleted and it is the client’s achievement section, which is something a recruiter is going to findimportant. Every section is uniform. For example, all of the names of companies are underlined andall positions are bold and italic.Bottom line, use aspects that Microsoft Word(or whatever program you are using) offers, andexperiment with the functions offered so youcan see what looks good and makes you unique.Standing out against the rest is what is importantand what is going to get you noticed. Make ityour own and don’t sell yourself short!PAGE 4
