TheFund Message provides the terms of the award, renewal criteria, and any other steps you maybe required to take to receive the award.Eligibility for institutional scholarship renewal is checked at the end of the spring semester.Should a student fall short of meeting the requirements of scholarship renewal, it is advisablethat he/she meet with a financial aid counselor in the Office of Student Financial Assistance toinquire about the consequences and options. Scholarship recipients may take courses during2 Page2/17/2016

2015-16 MARSHALL UNIVERSITY MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPSthe summer to make up a deficiency with credits or GPA. In this instance, students must contactthe Office of Student Financial Assistance when the summer course(s) are completed. However, at the start of the fall semester, if the student fails to meet all scholarship renewalcriteria, the award is cancelled and will no longer be available to the student.Combining Scholarship AwardsIn all cases, the total amount a student is awarded cannot exceed the cost of a MarshallUniversity education. In some instances, when Title IV (certain Federal Financial Aid programs)and WV Higher Education Grant Programs are awarded, students are limited to receive grantsand scholarships up to the student’s demonstrated financial need.If a reduction in financial aid is required because the student is a recipient of scholarships, grants, and other financial assistance that exceed allowable amounts, Marshall Universityreduces self-help (loans and work-study) awards first. If gift aid (scholarships and grants) mustbe reduced, however, Marshall University scholarships/grants will be reduced before reducingexternal scholarships/grants.Student athletes who have been offered an academic scholarship should discuss the award witha financial aid counselor in the Office of Student Financial Assistance to determine whether ornot the scholarship can be accepted. Under NCAA rules, student athletes are limited in theamount of institutional gift aid they may receive. Institutional aid includes both athleticscholarships and institutional merit scholarships.Outside ScholarshipsOutside scholarships are processed by the Office of the Bursar. You may be asked to come tothe Office of the Bursar to endorse a check as some are made out to Marshall University andthe student. Outside scholarship funds will be applied to your account just like institutionalscholarship awards after the outside scholarship check has been cashed. Outside scholarshipsare considered a source of financial aid and follow the same rules under the CombiningScholarship Awards section of this menu.Scholarship Funding Source ReplacementMarshall University has the right to replace an awarded scholarship with another namedscholarship to maximize funding sources. Such changes will not reduce the amount of thestudent’s scholarship, and in some cases, may actually result in an increase to a student’sscholarship amount.Holding Scholarships for Interrupted AttendanceMarshall University may hold a student’s scholarship if his/her attendance is interrupted formedical reason, military deployment, or other extenuating circumstances provided the studentcontinues to meet the eligibility requirements. The student must submit an appeal to the Officeof Student Financial Assistance and submit verification of reason for leaving (i.e. doctor note,3 Page2/17/2016
