Honorary Doctorate RecipientsHonorary doctoral degrees have been awarded occasionally by the American University of Beirut since 1890.In 2003, the tradition resumed after a long hiatus. Since then, honorary doctorates of humane letters havebeen awarded each year to individuals who are distinguished in specific fields and whose achievementsreflect the ideals and mission of this University.The following have been awarded honorary doctorates of humane letters for the year 2017:Huda AkilInnovative scientist, brilliant teacher, and world-class mentor, Huda Akil’s groundbreaking research has beentransformative in helping the world understand the neurobiology of emotions. Akil is the Gardner QuartonDistinguished Professor of Neurosciences, professor of Psychiatry, and co-director and senior researchscientist in the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute at the University of Michigan. Born inDamascus, Syria, Akil is one of the most highly-cited neuroscientists in the world.Mouna HaraouiA humanitarian, activist, inspiring public speaker, and former first lady of Lebanon, Mouna Haraoui spentdecades of her life promoting education, public health, and human rights and is the founder and president ofthe Chronic Care Center. She put women and children at the core of development efforts and is the founder ofthe National Heritage Foundation and the Lebanese Permanent Committee of Coordination, and is an awardwinning member of several national and international associations.Simon ShaheenEleven-time Grammy Award-nominated composer; avid producer of festivals; renowned leader of musicensembles; winner of multiple international awards for his original creations of unique world music and hisingenuity as virtuoso on the oud and violin; professor of music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston,Simon Shaheen is one of the most significant Arab musicians and performers of his generation. He hasreleased seven albums and contributed selections to soundtracks for movies, theatrical performances, anddocumentaries.Ahdaf SoueifNovelist, journalist, activist, commentator, and eloquent witness, Ahdaf Soueif is one of the most prominentand influential Egyptian writers of her time. Her best-selling novel, The Map of Love, has sold over 1.5million copies and was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize in 1999.
