Although modern trends, technologies, and convenience have dissolvedour observance of many traditions, today’s universities continue to visiblyhonor graduates through academic dress. In fact, the cap and gown havecome to symbolize the event of “graduation.” The wearing of specialgowns and hoods is a practice that actually dates back to the 12th and 13thcenturies when universities began to form. The baccalaureate degree wasrecognized with its premiere ceremony at England’s Oxford University in1432, and over 200 years later, in 1642, Harvard became the first college inAmerica to hold a commencement ceremony.Clerical attire was the typical dress of scholars – whether students orteachers – during those medieval times; long gowns provided necessarywarmth in unheated buildings. Hoods as head-coverings also suited thepurpose of resisting the cold. The Celts and their priests, the Druids,initiated the wearing of hoods to distinguish a level of training. Onlythe Druids wore mantles with attached hoods to mark their superioritywithin society.Of course, the giving of hoods is now an important part of ourgraduation ceremonies. Hoods serve to communicate the individualschool, degree and field of study through their varied length and the colorsof the lining and binding. The hoods we use today have evolved a greatdeal since the middle ages. No longer a serviceable article of clothing, theyare now elongated scarves draped over the shoulders and displayed downthe back with the lining turned inside out. They are rich with meaning,symbolizing authority, prestige, and the identification of a new graduate’sinstitution and the degree being awarded.Although a hood is always black in color, the lengths, edges, and liningshave individual significance. For example, the graduate earning a bachelor’sdegree receives a hood of three feet. A master’s degree graduate isbestowed with a hood of three and one-half feet, and a four-foot lengthdenotes a doctoral recipient.The color of the hood’s lining identifies the institution conferring thedegree. Husson University’s colors of green and gold are indicated on ourgraduates’ hoods. The velvet trim on the hood is indicative of the scholar’sfield of study.4
