What is hunger andhow does it relate to health? What is hunger?Hunger, also known as food insecurity, is a household-level economic and socialcondition of limited access to food. Families who have access at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life areconsidered food secure. Those who experience reduced intake and/or suffer with poor food quality due toinsufficient financial resources or access to quality food are considered food insecure. Food insecurity and poor health Hunger and food insecurity challenge the well being of children, adults, families andcommunities. Obesity and food insecurity While the problem is still being studied by public health experts, research has showna direct correlation between food insecure households and obesity. Although the paradox is not completely understood, several causes are being proposed. Someresearch shows that trade offs are often made between food quantity and food quality; whenfinancial resources are stretched, families buy less expensive, less nutritious foods which areoften higher in fat and sugar.Obesity is also proposed as a result of cyclic access to food supplies. When financial resourcesbecome available such as the beginning of the month, family members may overeat and binge tocompensate for when food was unavailable.Lastly, research has also shown that obesity rates are higher in areas that have lower propertyvalues. Low income demographic areas typically have limited access to grocery stores with freshaffordable produce and other nutritional foods.People experiencing food insecurity need healthy foods for their families to helpthem make ends meet and get through difficult times. How can you help? Pregnant women are more likely to give birth to low-birth-weight babies.Children are more likely to have medical and behavioral problems, do poorly in school, requiremore hospitalizations and are more likely to develop chronic diseases as adults.Among the elderly, food insecurity exacerbates acute chronic diseases and speeds the onset ofdegenerative diseases, leading to decreased quality and length of life (1).Please consider hosting or participating in a healthy food drive. What is a healthy food drive?A healthy food drive is the collection of canned/preserved food with an emphasis onthe collection of foods that are reduced in fat, sugar and sodium. Examples of healthyfood items include: canned fruit in light syrup, no sugar added applesauce, driedfruits, peanut butter, low sodium soups, granola bars, whole grain cereals, no saltadded vegetables, and whole wheat pastas. (Please refer to the “Suggested HealthFoods Donation List” for further details.) Emphasis should be on collecting healthy foods which can be prepared in livingarrangements with modest kitchen supplies. http://www.wastenotoc.org/(1) Curtis, Shelley. Standard Practices for Community ClinicsTo address the relationship between food insecurity and health, Orange County’s Public HealthOfficer has developed a set of standard practices for all community clinics to seriously consider. Standard Practice #1: Screen patients for food insecurityA 2-item food insecurity screen for identifying families at risk for food insecurity was developed anddemonstrates sensitivity, specificity, and convergent validity. The food insecurity screen quicklyidentifies households with young children at risk for food insecurity, which enables providers totarget services to ameliorate the health and developmental consequences associated with foodinsecurity.Food Insecurity Screening tool in English:Please answer the following statements with "often true", "sometimes true" and "never true":--Within the past 12 months we worried whether our food would run out before we got money tobuy more. Is this "often true", "sometimes true" or "never true"?--Within the past 12 months the food we bought just didn’t last and we didn’t have money to getmore. Standard Practice #2: Connect patients with resources to address hungerWe have the capability to end hunger in Orange County by maximizing the utility of our alreadyexisting infrastructure.A Google Map of over 230 regularly distributing food pantries has been created to make it easier toidentify locations that donate or accept food (www.wastenotoc.org). Other county resourcesinclude food banks and 211oc.org. Standard Practice #3: Provide food insecure clients with on-site emergency foodClinics with the capacity to store food are encouraged to provide on-site emergency food. This canbe as simple as storing nonperishable foods or as comprehensive as the Share Our Selves clinic’sfood pantry in Costa Mesa, CA.
