March 2014 Quarterly Progress ReportTo Families & Caregivers of Walton Student-Scholars:Thank you for your ongoing support of your student-scholars and of the educators who anchor eachof your Investment School communities. I am grateful for the input you provided to CMSD during therecent Community Circle-Back Conversations and am glad to share with you the third-quarter InvestmentSchool progress reports for school year 2013-14.We are seeing positive trends in many of the “leading indicators” of school improvement. Most InvestmentSchools have demonstrated a significant reduction in suspensions, a decrease in serious disciplinaryincidents, and increased family and community participation at school events. In addition, based onbenchmark assessment data from our high schools, two out of three Investment high schools showedgrowth in their predicted Performance Index as compared to the fall baseline or as compared to last year’sPerformance Index score.Staff attendance at most of the Investment Schools is also at or above the district average. This data isparticularly encouraging, because academic achievement can rise in every classroom when both studentscholars and educators work together to accelerate learning. However, I remain concerned that studentattendance is declining in many Investment and other CMSD schools. With spring weather finallyapproaching, we need all our families’ help to ensure every student-scholar comes to school every day. Westill have enough days remaining this school year to make significant increases in academic achievement. In the coming months, there will be ongoing opportunities for families and community members toprovide feedback on our goals and progress. Please share your ideas and concerns with your School-ParentOrganization (SPO), Investment School principal, or Trent Mosley, the Executive Director who supportsthe Investment Schools {contact info below}. We also appreciate that many of you are willing to share yourfeedback through telephone and online surveys. We truly value all your responses.Your active participation in your child’s education is an important part of our effort to turn aroundInvestment Schools and to fulfill the promise of The Cleveland Plan that every child will attend a successfulschool. When report cards are issued on March 31, talk and reflect with your child and help him or her toset goals for the rest of the year. Read with your children. Ask teachers how you can support what studentscholars are learning in the classroom. It is our privilege as educators to work in partnership with familiesto ensure every student-scholar succeeds. The Investment School progress reports will continue to provide a detailed look at your child’s schoolperformance so that, together, we can reinforce strategies that are working and provide additional supportswhere needed to accelerate school improvement in all the Investment Schools. Thank you.Sincerely,Eric GordonChief Executive OfficerTrent MosleyInvestment School rg216.212.17122InvstSchoolsRep1-Walton3-14.indd 23/18/14 12:24 PM

Walton Investment SchoolDear Walton Community:It is hard to believe that the 3rd quarter has ended and we will soon begin the 4th quarter of theschool year. This final quarter holds immense possibility for the continued growth of our scholarsand our entire school community. The attached data reflects the progress realized thus far andhighlights the gains we have made, as well as the opportunities we have ahead of us. We are excitedto report that Walton was recognized in a recent Plain Dealer article for being one of the top 10CMSD schools with the highest parental involvement at 81%! Thank you for your continuedsupport of our scholars and of us, your Walton family. We cannot do this very important workwithout you, and your presence truly does make a difference. We are also celebrating the fact thatour suspensions for the year are down from 165 last year to 77 this year. Utilizing our WaltonWAVE peer mediators, Efficacy and other behavior intervention strategies has helped us improveour climate for learning.Your support has made the difference and also allows me to ask for your help with a very importantgoal that we have yet to reach as a school community. I am asking for help with scholar attendance. Our scholar attendance, at an 85.1%, is well below the state target of 93%, and is also well below lastyear’s average of 91%. It is the expectation of the State of Ohio, the Cleveland Metropolitan SchoolDistrict and Walton School that our scholars are in school, on time, every day. We need your help ifwe are to reach our minimum target of 93%. We all know that being in school every day is the firststep in academic achievement because if you’re not in school you can’t learn. Although this has beena very difficult winter, with many snow days and frigid temperatures, I need your help to ensure thatyour scholar is in school, on time, every day for the rest of this school year! If we work together, wewill make a difference for our scholars. As always, we thank you for your commitment to our scholars, our school and our community!Sincerely,Elizabeth M. Keep in mind that HB 525, The Cleveland Plan, requires that all families attend a family conference by December15 of each school year.12009581000800# of participants atfamily andcommunity teAs of February 28.
