About Golden Dawn Enochian MagicThe Enochian system of magic was discovered during theRenaissance by the noted court astrologer John Dee and hissomewhat mysterious assistant, Edward Kelly. Dee and Kellyused the age-old technique of skrying to reveal an elaborateand elegant system of angelic hierarchies, spiritual planes, anda self-contained Enochian alphabet. This is not an antiquatedsystem of philosophy worthy of study only by specialists, however. Using this information, contemporary practicingmagicians can, as Dee and Kelly did, travel to new levels ofconsciousness and explore alternative realities.Aleister Crowley's description of Enochian magic in anedition of The Equinox in 1912 re-introduced this complex andfascinating system to modern readers. Since then, manydifferent explanations of the Enochian worlds have appeared.Among them was a new exploration by the members of theGolden Dawn movement in England. Golden Dawn EnochianMagic, based on the unpublished papers of various GoldenDawn associates, reveals the secrets of the Golden Dawnapproach. As a member of the Whare Ra temple of New Zealand, PatZalewski has made his own exploration and has compiled anexcellent sourcebook of new information and valuableinterpretation. Over 100 drawings, diagrams and tables areincluded to guide the reader through the Enochian mysteries, and important rituals associated with Enochian magic arepresented in the book's appendices. A thorough and usefulbook on a difficult subject, Golden Dawn Enochian Magic willfascinate both scholars and serious students of magicalexploration.

ABOUT LLEWELLYN'S HIGH MAGICK SERIESPractical Magick is performed with the aid of ordinary, everydayimplements, is concerned with the things of the Earth and theharmony of Nature, and is considered to be the magick of thecommon people. High Magick, on the other hand, has long beenconsidered the prerogative of the affluent and the learned. Someaspects of it certainly call for items expensive to procure and forknowledge of ancient languages and tongues, though that is not trueof all High Magick. There was a time when, to practice High Magick,it was necessary to apprentice oneself to a Master Magician, or Mage, and to spend many years studying and, later, practicing. Throughoutthe Middle Ages there were many high dignitaries of the Church whoengaged in the practice of High Magick. They were the ones withboth the wealth and the learning.High Magick is the transformation of the Self to the HigherSelf. Some aspects of it also consist of rites designed to conjure spirits,or entities, capable of doing one's bidding. Motive is the driving forceof these magicks and is critical for success. In recent years there has been a change from the traditionalthoughts regarding High Magick. The average intelligence today isvastly superior to that of four or five centuries ago. Minds attuned tocomputers are finding a fascination with the mechanics of HighMagical conjuration (this is especially true of the mechanics ofEnochian magick). The Llewellyn High Magick Series has taken the place of theMage; the Master Magician who would teach the apprentice."Magick" is simply making happen what one desires to happen—asAleister Crowley put it: "The art, or science of causing change tooccur in conformity with will." The Llewellyn High Magick Seriesshows how to affect that change and details the steps necessary tocause it.Magick is a tool. High Magick is a potent tool. Learn to use it.Learn to put it to work to improve your life. This series will help youdo just that.

PrefaceIf you believe the legends, Enochian magic was originally delivered to Man by Enoch, the mysterious prophet of Genesis. TheEnochian calls are reputed to be in the language of the Angels, ofwhich Hebrew is said to be but a faint echo. The Enochian tablets, according to the story, are the talismans from which all othermagical sigils are descended. Small wonder Enochian magic is reputedto be the most powerful (and dangerous) blanch of the occult!Enochian magic originated, of course, with a series of crystalgazing experiments that Dr. John Dee conducted in the latesixteenth century. The foremost scholar of his era, Dee turned awayfrom mundane knowledge to seek what he called "radical truth." Deebelieved that Enoch had received such truths from conversationswith the angels. Dee theorized that he could use crystal gazing toreestablish communication with Enoch's angels, thus restoring thefountainhead of supernatural knowledge.Whether or not Dee succeeded is open to question. Dee certainlybelieved that he had tapped into angelic power, but there is littleevidence that the knowledge did him much good. Nevertheless, by thetime he died, his experiments were widely enough known to lend anaura of mystery and power to his name.ix

The language was given on a large tablet of 49 one-inchsquares which constituted the four Watchtower Tablets and theTablet of Union. The 48 Enochian Calls were also derived by the useof these large tablets. Dee and Kelley had at their disposal a highlysophisticated system of magic which apparently neither of themcomprehended. It remained just a collection of channeled messagesin an archaic language, recorded in a series of obscure manuscripts, until MacGregor Mathers discovered them in the British Museum. He introduced Enochian Magic into the Golden Dawn System, and forthe first time it became something other than theory andspeculation. This vast collection of material became the crown jewelof the Order's work. The vast amount of material collected by Dee and Kelley indicates that they transcribed an entirely new language with its owngrammar and syntax. Occultists have called this language"Enochian" because the dictating angel, Ave, was said to haveoriginally given the tablets to Enoch. As we look at The Golden Dawn by Regardie, it is evident that theEnochian work is not studied until all of the preliminary Outer OrderWork has been completed. The students are exposed to theWatchtower tablets in ritual, and they do commit fundamentals ofthe system to memory, but no actual Enochian ritual is performed inthe Outer Order. Regardie himself warned against approaching theadvanced work without a sound foundation. I might add that it is ofthe utmost importance that the student be balanced emotionally, mentally and physically before undertaking any magical work. Whenone attains the level of 5 6 (Adeptus Minor), s/he begins the InnerOrder Work. Enochian study, ritual and research become one of theprimary pursuits.Enochian material in The Golden Dawn consists of the fourWatchtower Tablets, the Tablet of Union, the Angelic Calls andEnochian Chess. In reality this is just the beginning and only anintroduction to the system. We must remember that when Regardiepublished the GD in 1940, he had left the Hermes Temple at the levelof Zelator Adeptus Minor (Z.A.M.). What is written in his bookrepresents the course of study in that sub-grade, and no more.Regardie himself was aware that he had not been given the totalknowledge of various divisions of the GD Enochian system, such as:xii

Sigillum Dei Aemeth1. Tabula Sancta2. Liber Scientia Auxilii et Victoria Terrestris3. Heptarchia Mystica4. Tablet of Nalvage5. The Four Elemental Tablets6. Liber LogeathStudying the Enochian theory is an interesting and fascinatingprocess. It challenges the intellect and expands the consciousness ofthe student merely by application of the mind. I believe the truebeauty and wonder of the system is its efficacy in the development andevolution of the student on all levels—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual—when it is put into practice. All magic is effective incausing these changes, but in my opinion, no system compares withEnochian Magic, approached with the proper stability andfoundation.Pat Zalewski is a "practicing" magician rather than one of the"armchair" variety who merely theorizes about magic. Pat and hiswife, Chris, have spent the last 10 years dedicated to the research, preservation, and development of the GD material placed in theircare, much of it from the elder Adepts of the Whare Re Temple in NewZealand. They are both practicing magicians. Together they are inthe process of writing a number of books which detail theirexperiences with the Golden Dawn work. Shortly before his death,Regardie traveled to New Zealand to meet with Zalewski. He told anumber of us on his return that he had finally found a "GoldenDawn Man."We at Ra Horakhty Temple feel fortunate to have worked withthe Zalewski's through Regardie's efforts, and have enjoyed a workingrelationship with them ever since. They have generously funneledinformation to our temple, asking only that we put it into practice andexperiment with it on a large-scale basis. Since we have a large andactive membership, including a number of members in other statesand countries, we have been able to successfully accomplish this. All ofthe material in this book, as well as all forthcoming material Zalewskiwill be writing for Llewellyn, has been put into actual practice by theZalewski's, as well as by Ra Horakhty Temple on a larger scale. Thestudent will find no untried practices or theories.xiii

Some of the additional books being written by Zalewski forLlewellyn are: Z5, Commentary on the 0 0 Ceremony; Commentary on Each of the Elemental Grade Rituals; Equinox and Solstice Rituals of the Golden Dawn; Golden Dawn Tarot; and SexMagic of the Golden Dawn. These ere just a few of more than 20books which they have either finished or are presently writing. We all hope this series of Golden Dawn books makes the material clear and will serve as a guide for the student who feels this ishis path. Those who might wish to work in a Golden Dawn Templeunder the guidance of Temple Advisors should feel free to write tous in Washington.—Laura Jennings-YorkeRa Horakhty TempleHermetic Society of the Golden Dawn31849 Pacific Hwy. Author'sIntroductionThe Enochian System of Magic began on March 8, 1581,through the efforts of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley (sometimes spelled Kelly). Dee was the Court Astrologer of QueenElizabeth I of England, and Kelley was his partner. A clairvoyant,Kelley acted as the channel of communication between Dee andvarious angelic entities. Kelley made contact with these entities byskrying with a crystal, or shewstone. Dee carefully recorded theresults of the angelic communications in a series of diaries whichare now in the British Library (Sloane 3188, 3189, 3191, 3677 and3678).On perusing these manuscripts, it becomes evident that a newlanguage, with a rudimentary grammar, developed over the years oftheir communicating. This language was apparently passed onby
