From the EditorYou may have noticed that the June issue of the Informeris rather tardy. I would like to lay all the blame for thissquarely on the shoulders of Zoe French, as she hadthe temerity to go and give birth rather than getting onwith the far more important Informer design. I WOULD liketo, but, while ‘legitimate’ (like claiming expenses for ‘moatwidening’), such an action (like claiming for a ’duck island’),is morally reprehensible: it’s all my fault again. It is now alreadya few teeny, but significant, hours into June and I’ve only juststarted composing my Editorial. If only I’d just got on with itrather than honing my procrastination skills All Informer staff would like to offer our congratulationsto Zoe (who does most of the real work for the Informerwhile allowing me to take the credit), Paul and Olivia(who has had the decency to let her mum get on andput this mighty tome together!).Coming up this month, as you will have seen on our frontpage, is Isleham’s first ever ‘Footie Festival’: come along andcheer along our future Beckhams and Lampards. Also, theschool PTA have organised an auction of promises: see page9 for details and please support this novel event. Next month,of course, is the embarrassment of riches that is Isleham Gala:THE Isleham event of the year. See you there! Finally, there was a note in some copies of the April Informerasking for assistance in delivering the magazine in the EastRoad area. I persuaded my daughter Phoebe that she mightlike to give up a little of her valuable time to perform this service, but by the time we phoned Distribution Manager RichardTurner, the number of volunteers was already into doublefigures! So many thanks to all deliverers for your enthusiasmand dedication in getting the Informer where it belongs. Isleham Swimming Pool Association10th Anniversary yearIn 1998 a group of parents stood inIsleham Primary School playgroundlooking at a pool with broken solarpanels (so no heating), and changingrooms that resembled sheds and were notweather proof! Swimming was cancelledas the pool had fallen into disrepair.Within a week, a band of parentsgathered together for a meeting. Manyparents volunteered their services to rebuildthe changing rooms and oversee buildingplans etc. A fundraising committee wasformed and many events staged, such asa family barbecue, which is still an annualevent. In order to continue with new plansthe Isleham Swimming Pool Associationwas formed in March 1999. The pool thenreopened in May 2000.It is because of the dedication andforesight of those parents and volunteersthat we have our pool today. The currentcommittee would like to thank them all– I haven’t named them in case I leave anyone out butthey know who they are.We continued blissfully swimming, only needing to buya new bubble cover in summer 2006, until a leak wasnoticed in January 2007. The liner was removed only todiscover rotten timbers, and a rebuild was needed. Withcosts estimated at 9000 we were faced with raisingour contribution of 4500. Fundraising began in earnest, with the annual barbecue, a fashion show, car washes, clothing collections, quiz nights and some very generousdonations. We finally achieved our target and the poolreopened in June 2007. In summer 2008 we purchasedan all weather awning to protect children and parentswaiting to swim.We wouldn’t, however, be able to swim at all withoutthe pool carers. This is a hugely important role, as it ensuresthe safety of the water for swimming. This role is currentlyundertaken by Neil Wilkes (who doesn’t even havechildren at the school now), and Samuel Stamp-Dod.We give heartfelt thanks to themboth for continuing in this role. Wedo, however, need a new poolcarer to enable the pool to beused over the summer period,so if anyone is interested, pleasecontact Samuel Stamp-Dod atIsleham Primary School. We will be having a 10thAnniversary float on Gala Dayso cheer us on our way! Finally, with so many schoolslosing their pools because ofmounting financial costs, it isvery important to support ours. Please support our fundraisingevents so our children can keepthis wonderful facility.Marie BowkerSecretary of Isleham SwimmingPool Association.8

ICA Community Centre NewsPlanning permission applicationIt is imperative that weachieve the right balancebetween a realisticestimated cost and acceptablespecifications for the Centre. Istated in the last edition thatmeetings were taking placewith the architects and quantitysurveyor with these objectivesin mind. I am now pleased toreport that we finally have planswe believe to be viable, andthat these plans have been approved by the ParishCouncil. Planning permission can therefore now besought. To allow flexibility on costs we have compromisedslightly on the plans, and will be making Phase 1 and Phase2 applications. Before going into detail it is importantto stress that we still hope to conduct some, or all, ofthe Phase 2 work at the same time as Phase 1, but feltthat we should leave options.
