A NEW LEVEL OF CANCER CARE

(well . actually 4 levels)We have entered a new era for treating cancer. It is built around pioneering therapiesand innovative ways of providing care. It is an era of hope and of potential. And forUNC REX Healthcare, which has long been a leader in cancer care, it is an era of opportunity,a time to move boldly forward in its mission to offer advanced treatments with compassion, skill and convenience.UNC REX Healthcare is building a new Cancer Center on its main campus in Raleigh. The new facility will allow UNC REX Healthcare to adapt to the demands of the emergingrevolution in cancer care, helping patients and their families through the complicatedchallenges of this disease. The new Cancer Center will light up the Blue Ridge Corridor, bringing a world-class medical facility and unprecedented degree of treatment, rehabilitation, education and healing not only to Wake County and the Triangle, but to the state of NorthCarolina and the entire Southeast. The building will be four levels covering 144,000 square feet. Located across Blue RidgeRoad from the new North Carolina Heart & Vascular Hospital, the new Cancer Center willbe easily accessible and will provide free and convenient parking. Patients’ experienceswill be improved and enhanced by the spaciousness, thoughtful design, aestheticconsideration and advanced technology, as well as by the efficiencies and collaborationthat come by bringing physicians and staff close together.

ollaboration, ompassion andommunityUNC REX Healthcare has been caring for the people of Raleigh and the surroundingarea since 1894. It was established by John Rex, a prominent tanner and planter, and beganin a converted residence with a staff of seven. After outgrowing other locations, UNC REXmoved to its current site on Lake Boone Trail in 1980.The current UNC REX Cancer Center opened on the main campus in 1987, first with radiationoncology and later hematology oncology. The quality of the center is evidenced by itscontinual accreditation as a Community Cancer Center since 1991 by the American Collegeof Surgeons Commission on Cancer and also accreditation as a Breast Care Center ofExcellence beginning in 2010. These distinctions contributed to the UNC REX Cancer Centerbecoming the first and only dually accredited community oncology program in the Triangle. The current Cancer Center facility is over 30 years old and has become strained due tolimitations of space. As Wake County continues to grow, so will the need for cancer care. Theservice area of UNC REX Healthcare attracts 63 new residents each day. The UNC REX CancerCare needs a new building to accommodate increasing volumes of oncology patients, andthe medical practices, technology and staff that serve them. The new facility will maintainand enhance UNC REX Healthcare’s well-earned reputation for timely, compassionate,patient-centered cancer care using the best medical science available.Through its partnership with the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center,UNC REX cancer patients will benefit from the best in academic medicine. Physicians, staff and patients have been involved throughout the new facility’s design process toensure that it meets the needs of stakeholders. And even as UNC REX expands its facilitiesin Raleigh, its suburban Cancer Center locations in Wakefield, East Raleigh, Garner andCary will continue offering the same outstanding and convenient cancer treatmentfor patients living in those areas.

Opportunities to contributeThe new Cancer Center will do more than provide the most up-to-date and effective cancer care. From its inception, our guiding principles for the new design have focused on:Supporting the emotional journey of those affected by cancerProviding patients, staff and caregivers with healthy choices to revitalize themselvesOffering comfort through ease of use and control over the environmentApplying these principles has created opportunities to support services benefitting our patientsand caregivers, including:Oncology urgent carePatient educationGenetics counselingChemotherapy treatmentCancer support groupsSocial work resourcesRegistered dietician servicesPost treatment check-upsAnnual monitoringKidsCan! family support programCancer patient image recoveryOncology clinical research and clinical trialsLab workA range of venues inside and around the new building will accommodate these activitiesto treat and support the body, mind and spirit of cancer patients and caregivers, along withthe physicians and staff delivering this care. In order to realize this broad vision of a trulycomprehensive facility, UNC REX, along with community leaders, has created a campaignto fund and name critical components. Philanthropy from the community will play a significantrole in creating these important, often transformative spaces, including the following:

Multi-Disciplinary Oncology Educational Conference RoomUNC REX is proud to be a leader in collaboration among medical professionalsinvolved in patient care. Each day in multi-disciplinary conferences, physiciansfrom each treatment discipline (oncologists, radiologists, pathologists andothers) share knowledge and treatment options appropriate for patients. The room in which theseconferences take place employs advanced technologies as well as ease of use and efficiencies inpresenting information to enable real-time treatment decision-making. This room is also used forcontinuing medical education, especially in collaboration with the UNC Cancer Network.LobbiesPatients and caregivers are welcomed into lobbies that allow for easy navigationon each floor, offering a living room-like setting, fireplaces on levels 1 and 3,and a beautiful atrium overlook on level 2. Natural stone from North Carolinaquarries, thoughtful placement of furniture for intimate or group conversations, beveragecounters, outside views through large windows and an open stairwell encourage a moreintegrated experience throughout the Cancer Center.Community Assembly RoomThe Cancer Center will be a gathering place for non-profit organizationsand other groups that may need space to share resources and programswith cancer patients. Just off the front lobby, the assembly room will seat80-100 people and will be designed to encourage collaboration among health professionalsand the community.GardensHEALING GARDEN: A quiet, reflective area outside the Quality of Life wing thatextends the benefits of the complementary therapies of massage, acupuncture, counseling, art and music. The garden will have native plants and a sculptural area.

GATEWAY GARDEN: Located at the front of the Cancer Center and leading into the lobby, this garden will be a welcoming space of color and native plants, along with benches invitingvisitors and patients to stop, rest and enjoy the surroundings.EMPLOYEE RESPITE GARDEN: At the rear of the building will be a place for staff to be in nature, connect with each other, and feel renewed. Compassion fatigue is real in a medical settingwhere there are many ups and downs. The Respite Garden is designed to support staff andencourage connection with peers to provide self-care that helps avoid burn out.Quality of Life ClinicWhen the bustle of scans, biopsies, lab work and treatment options settles, the body, mind and spirit search for ways to absorb what has happened. Thisclinic integrates body therapy, music therapy and art, counseling, supportgroups, image recovery and a child life area to heal and support patients, caregivers andfamilies. With awareness of the Triangle’s diversity in every demographic, our programmingsupports everyone during diagnosis, treatment, the new normal of survivorship – as well as,providing end-of-life resources.BoutiqueThis image recovery area will provide wigs in a variety of styles and colorsat no cost to patients who experience hair loss caused by their treatment.Patients are encouraged to choose a wig, turban and scarf to create the imagethat best suits them. The Boutique is a place of safety to both welcome and to express themany emotions stirred by hair loss.Group Consult RoomSupport groups encourage patients and caregivers to share their stories andlearn from one another. They may find comfort in recognizing that they arenot alone and that their experience, while profound, is one of many otherextraordinary stories. Designed with two walls of windows, the room’s connection to theoutdoors offers an environment of healing and hope.

Symptom and Urgent Care CenterPatients often have new symptoms or side effects from treatment that needsame-day resolution. Questions may be resolved by phone, but the urgent careclinic on level 3 is available for patients to make an appointment when theirregular oncologist’s schedule may already be at capacity. Patients do not have to tackle theuncertainties of an emergency department visit and instead have the comfort of a familiarenvironment and treatment. It also assures that the urgent care team connects with the patient’sphysician so that changes are monitored.Family Respite AreaLevel 3 of the Cancer Center is designed for chemotherapy infusion patients whomay spend 3-6 hours in an infusion chair. A caregiver often joins the patient toshare the experience and offer support. UNC REX Cancer Center encouragescaregivers to care for themselves as well, and the respite area will have places to plug in electronics, make phone calls, breathe fresh air on the terrace, have a snack and talk with others while being away —but not too far away — from the patients.Arts InitiativeThe presence of art in hospital settings promotes the welfare of patients, their familiesstaff and visitors. Your donation to the Arts Initiative will ensure that the best painters, sculptors, photographers and craftspeople will be showcased through the Cancer Center.Art is as varied as people. We reach places withinourselves through its expression - sharing art witha community can bring about the richest of experiences.
