4Homes for Healthy Ageing TestbedThe TestbedsWhat is a testbed?Testbeds play a vital role in helping assess the viability, impact and potential for scale of newinnovations. It’s an approach that removes barriers to testing by giving UK SMEs and innovatorsaccess to user groups and local environments so they can develop, test and showcase new orexisting products and services without the usual risks.Homes for Healthy Ageing TestbedA mindset to shareTestbeds are great opportunities to trial innovative and ambitious ideas in real-life settings, gatherinsights and feedback from user groups and refine or adjust those solutions. Testbeds offer a safespace for learning and iteration to move towards developing a more meaningful user-centeredsolution.Therefore, deploying and developing solutions within testbeds require innovators to be ambitiousand flexible to test, learn and pivot quickly.5

6Homes for Healthy Ageing TestbedHomes for Healthy Ageing Testbed7BelfastSunderlandChallenge Theme:Social Isolation and LonelinessChallenge Theme:Cold and Damp Housing ConditionsIn Northern Ireland, there is a strong motivationto improve the care of older adults. Reportshighlight that Northern Ireland has the mostrapidly ageing population of UK nation states. Inrecognising an ageing population with increasinghealthcare needs, including frailty and multimorbidities, there is a need to develop supportto ensure older community-dwelling adults canmaintain a good quality of life. A key predictorof quality of life for older adults, includingboth mental and physical functioning, is socialconnectedness. This refers to people havingmeaningful, close, and constructive relationshipswith other individuals.Sunderland has an estimated population of277,962 in 2021, of this population it is predictedthat the number of residents aged 65 and overwill increase by more than 22% (66,300) by 2030.It is also forecast that by 2030 18,850 residentsaged 65 and over will be unable to performone domestic task or one self-care task forthemselves, an increase of 23 per cent on today’sfigures. This will have significant implicationsfor the health and social care of residents.Over recent years, the gap between socialconnectedness in Northern Ireland hasincreased, especially in older demographics. This problem has also been worsened by theCOVID-19 Pandemic, which has led to a rise insocial isolation and loneliness in over 65’s. Thismeans that older adults have an increased riskin their mental and physical health worseningcompared to other age groups. In order to tackle this challenge, the ConnectedPlaces Catapult are teaming up with a NorthernIreland based consortium to deliver a multi-sitetestbed that encompasses real world urban andrural settings, where cohorts of over 65-year-oldswill be engaged to identify innovative waysof enhancing social connectedness in theageing population.Consortium PartnersThe Northern Ireland consortium will comprisethe following partners: Ulster UniversityConnected Health Innovation Centre (CHIC)Queen’s University BelfastAge NIBelfast City CouncilPublic Health Agency NI The Health Innovation Research Alliance(HIRANI) Market Development Association (MDA)Furthermore, Sunderland is one of the 20%most deprived districts/unitary authorities inEngland, ranked 33rd most deprived in the 2019Index of Multiple Deprivation and 20th in theranking of Health Deprivation and Disability.Life expectancy is 11.5 years lower for men and8.7 years lower for women in the most deprivedareas of Sunderland than in the least deprivedareas. Evidence shows that living in a deprivedarea is strongly linked with higher mortality andlower chances of survival.A recurring problem which the city faces islinked to cold or damp housing conditionswhich can exacerbate respiratory conditionsin older residents. The consequences ofthis problem result in potentially costlyinterventions from health, housing, and socialcare organisations. In some cases, residents getcaught up in a cycle of causation, treatment, and intervention. Sunderland’s City Councilare therefore looking to establish a testingenvironment where solutions can be supportedto breaking this cycle. To find out more information on the location, the detailed challenges, access to infrastructureand the number of testers you will be workingwith – sign up to our challenge webinar on the15th September at 10am.
