6HEALTH SCIENCES CENTERS1.RecruitmentGeneral recruitment of students to the University is the responsibility of the UndergraduateAdmissions Office. The recruitment of both freshman and transfer students from other colleges,particularly the community colleges, with special emphasis on the three local communitycolleges, Suffolk Community College, Nassau Community College, and the State University ofNew York at Farmingdale, is undertaken by the Admissions office.Recruitment specifically to the School of Nursing is the responsibility of the School and isassigned to the Director of the Office of Student Affairs. Recruitment plans and activities aredirected toward achieving the following goals: Recruitment of sufficient numbers of applicants. Recruitment of applicants who are academically and experientially qualified. Recruitment of applicants from diverse backgrounds geographic regions and ethnic groups.Campus activities sponsored by University Undergraduate Programs include but not are limitedto: Weekends, and Days in Our World and the Scholar Incentives Colloquium, C-STEP.Prospective applicants primarily high school seniors, are invited to visit the University forinformation and advisement tours, for a whole weekend or simply a day. These events areregularly scheduled from November through March each year. The School of Nursing is invitedto have a representative at each of these events. Participation involves providing School ofNursing literature and on-site representation for groups of applicants at scheduled informationsessions.The School also provides pre-Admission advisors who travel away from campus on recruitmentvisits, with brochures and literature specific to the Nursing programs. An effort has been madeto establish and maintain effective communication channels with the personnel in theUndergraduate Admissions Office. Meetings are scheduled to communicate changes inadmissions policies and procedures by the School and to review standing requirements.Recruitment activities sponsored by the school involve the recruitment of applicants to the Basicand Registered Nurse Baccalaureate Program, the Master of Science Program. Strategiesemployed involve all of the following: Attendance at high school career days with particular attention to schools in areas withhigh minority enrollments. Attendance at Community College Transfer and Career Days. Preparation of brochures, bulletins and other recruitment materials specific to the Schoolof Nursing. Establishment of a regularly scheduled, weekly advisement session for all thoseinterested in a career in professional nursing. Attendance at “Transfer Days” at Associate degree programs. Personal appointments, for all who request them, for advisement by the Director of theOffice of Student Affairs. Attendance at national and international nursing organizations, conferences, seminarsand job fairs. Maintain current website links between strategic nursing organizations and the SUNYSchool of Nursing website. www.nursing.stonybrookmedicine.edu Print advertising in select nursing journals.Published documents contain statements indicating non-discrimination with respect to age,ethnic origin, race and gender. All published documents have and will continue to containstatements indicating non-discrimination. Within the School, the Committee on Admissions and AcademicStandards (AAS) recommends all policies regarding admission and academic standards to theDean. A School of Nursing application is provided to applicants on the School of Nursingwebsite, www.nursing.stonybrookmedicine.com. Completed applications, with three letters ofrecommendation and all other supporting materials, are reviewed by members of the AASCommittee and recommendations are made to the Dean for admission to the School. Apersonal interview may be required for qualified applicants for selected programs. Applicationsreceived after deadline dates and incomplete applications may be excluded from consideration.Selected students may begin studies in the Registered Nursing or Master’s program asnon-matriculated students, only by permission. A maximum of six (6) non-clinicalcredits may be earned prior to matriculation. The student must file an application foradmission to matriculated status. Non-matriculated study does not guarantee admission to theSchool. The applicant/nursing student must be able to assess and comprehend thecondition of all patients assigned to her or him. Such observation and information acquisitionusually requires the functional use of visual, auditory, olfactory and somatic senses.2. CommunicationThe applicant/nursing student must be able to communicate effectively and sensitively with patientsin order to elicit information, describe changes in mood, activity and posture, assess non-verbalcommunications, and be able to effectively and efficiently transmit information to patients, fellowstudents, faculty, staff and all members of the health care team. Skills include verbal, written, andnonverbal abilities consistent with effective communication.3. Sensory/MotorThe applicant/nursing student must be able to use the senses of seeing, hearing, touch, and smellto make correct judgments regarding patient conditions for the purpose of demonstratingcompetence to safely engage in the practice of nursing. The applicant/nursing student must havesufficient motor function to elicit information from patient and be able to execute motor movementsreasonably required to provide general care and emergency treatment to patients.4. Intellectual-Conceptual, Integrative and Quantitative AbilitiesThe applicant/nursing student must be able to measure, calculate, analyze, synthesize, andevaluate to engage completely in the safe practice of nursing.5. Behavioral and Social AttributesThe applicant/nursing student must have the emotional health to fully use her or his intellectualability, exercise good judgment, and complete all responsibilities attendant to the diagnosis andcare of patients. The practice of nursing requires applicants/nursing students to be able to developmature, sensitive, and effective relationships with patients and colleagues. To provide safe patientcare applicants/nursing students must possess characteristics of adaptability, flexibility, and be ableto function in the face of uncertainty.
