PROGRAM IN PUBLIC HEALTHThank you for your interest in the Program in Public Health(PPH) at Stony Brook University. We are committed toensuring that the educational experience of our students isintellectually challenging and provides the skills needed tobecome a leader in public health. We are very proud of thegraduate programs that we offer as part of our commitment toexcellence in teaching, research and service to achievepopulation health improvements.First, the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program isaccredited by the Council on Education for Public Health(CEPH), the only accrediting body for public health programsand schools in the United States. CEPH is recognized by theU.S. Department of Education, to accredit and assure that theschool or program has met accepted standards established byand with the public health profession. PPH is one of 198CEPH accredited schools and programs to date. In addition,the PPH is a founding member of the Association of Schoolsand Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). The ASPPH is thevoice of accredited public health education. In March of 2021,I was elected to serve as a member of the ASPPH Board ofDirectors sitting along with some of the Nation’s top Deansand Directors to lead the association’s mission in serve toacademic public health and the students we train to tacklepriority health issues. This year we will launch a track inEpidemiology and Biostatistics and another intended forclinically-oriented students called the Generalist. We also aredeveloping new initiatives with collaborators across theUniversity that, pending approval, will create a track uniquelyfocused on the intersection of climate change and humanhealth.Second, the Master of Health Administration (MHA) Programis accredited by the Commission on Accreditation ofHealthcare Management Education and is the only MHAprogram offered by a SUNY campus at this time. The MHAProgram is a participant in the American College ofHealthcare Executives (ACHE) Higher Education Network(HEN). The MHA Program also is an active member of TheAssociation of University Programs in Health Administration(AUPHA).Third, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Population Healthand Clinical Outcomes and the Master of Science (MS) inEpidemiology and Clinical Research are both mentor-matchedresearch training programs for individuals seeking a career asa scientist in this field of inquiry. PPH faculty in populationhealth studies and collaborating clinician scientists at StonyBrook Medicine provide a mentored research trainingexperience and coursework leading to the design, conduct andsuccessful defense of a dissertation project (PhD) or researchpracticum (MS). We also continue to offer advanced graduatecertificates, one in Health Communications in collaborationwith the School of Communications and the Alda Center forCommunicating Science, and a second in Health Educationand Health Promotion.The PPH is located in the Stony Brook University HealthSciences Center at Stony Brook Medicine, the only academichealth sciences center on Long Island. The Health SciencesCenter includes the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, DentalMedicine, Social Welfare, and Health Technology andManagement, in addition to the Stony Brook UniversityHospital and Health System. Together, we generatecollaborative research and practice-based innovations thathave contributed to an improved quality of life for manyindividuals and communities. Stony Brook Medicine also is apartner in scientific research with the Brookhaven NationalLaboratory, Mount Sinai Health System and has expanded toinclude Stony Brook Southampton as well as manycollaborations with the Stony Brook University schools andcolleges representing the arts and sciences, humanities,biomedical engineering, public policy, business, appliedmathematics, and many other disciplines that contribute to athriving campus community.A unique feature of Stony Brook University is its emphasis onmultidisciplinary education and research combined withcommunity service. The PPH shares this emphasis. TheProgram’s educational, service, and research initiativesemphasize an ecological understanding of health promotionand disease prevention. In keeping with this orientation, ourProgram draws its 34 full and part-time faculty from manydisciplines representing the clinical, social, and behavioralsciences, as well as the humanities. We also have over 50affiliates in public health practice who support aspects of theprogram’s mission, vision, values, goals and objectives. Webelieve our graduates are prepared to have the skills to design,implement, and evaluate programs for population healthimprovements in a variety of settings, to inform and useevidence-based interventions, and to conduct and translateresearch into beneficial programs and policies.The PPH offers a stimulating learning environment for fulland part-time students in our Advanced Graduate Certificates,MPH and joint-degrees, MHA, MS, and PhD programs. Atthis time, we have more than 170 students across each of theseprograms, with a community of students who are inquisitiveand passionate about making a difference in the health of allpeople.
