Nine died of wounds during theRevolutionary War, Five were captured or imprisoned. Wives and children were jailed, mistreated, or left penniless.Twelve signers’ houses were burned to the ground. No signer defected. Their honor, like their nation remained intact.Vol. XIXOctober 2015No 10Message from the PresidentAt the September board meeting we accepted theresignation of “The Magazine” editor, Jim Swords.Significant family medical treatment requires his fullattention. We offer our prayers for a total recovery.Richard Newsome, our Historian, has assumedresponsibility for the “Magazine” and Bill Greaf hastaken on Richard’s previous responsibilities as chapterHistorian. Thank you both. Board action was also takento make the Magazine Editor a permanent member ofthe board.In other actions the tasks of the Sergeant at Arms,George Bridewell, were identified and enlarged toinclude: responsibility for luncheon place cards, nametags, luncheon room set up, the raffle, and accountabilityof our banners, flags etc. and, most important, greetingeach member and guest. To support these additionalactivities George has enlisted three able assistants: BobWhite, Eric Ely, and Steve McGuffin. Thank you,Gentlemen.Ed Truslow, Jack Lee, Harley Stewart and I attendedthe Virginia Society SAR semi-annual meeting inRoanoke on September 18 and 19. Our chapter waspresented a certificate for “Partners in Patriotism”. Thechapter was also singled-out for the number of newmembers (12) thus far in 2015. Well done Registrar RonLosee! Our chapter will host the state wide VASSARevent in September 2016.Our V.P. Jay Smith secured another excellent speakerfor our September meeting. John Millar, who cameattired in an authentic U.S. Revolutionary War navaluniform, provided historically interesting insights intothe French involvement in the Revolution.October 2015Over 40 attendees enjoyed his presentation. Mark yourcalendars now for our 10 October meeting and the annualWednesday 11 November Veterans day meetings.- Don SwainRegistrar’s CornerA few words from your registrar: With barely aquarter of 2015 remaining, we have exceeded last year'sgood recruiting effort and should attract a few more"good men" before the end of the year. Williamsburg ChapterSons of the American RevolutionOctober Luncheon Speaker: Doug CummingsDoug is a native New Yorker who was born onLong Island, grew up in Manhattan for 18 years,lived in the Bronx for 2 years, Staten Island for 25years, Morristown, NJ for 10 years and now hasbeen a resident of Williamsburg for 16 years.He attended Manhattan College on a baseballscholarship (tryouts with the San FranciscoGiants & Detroit Tigers in 1959) and from whichhe holds a BBA degree. In addition, he holds anMBA degree from Pace University and an MAdegree in History from Wagner College. He hasalso done post-graduate work in Colonial Historyin the Ph. D program at NYU.Doug is an instrument-rated private pilotand a member of the Tidewater FlyingClub at Newport News airport and hasbeen a Board member and Secretary forover 5 years. He currently has about 750hours of flight time, has logged over 500flights and enjoys flying in Virginia,Maryland and North Carolina.He has been married to his wife Eileenfor 53 years. They have 4 children and 9grandchildren (ages 8 to 23) who live inVirginia, Pennsylvania, Florida andTexas.Doug spent 34 years in the Telecommunicationsindustry in various management and executivepositions at NY Telephone, AT&T and BellCommunications Research before retiring in 1997.In retirement, Doug has volunteered with theDisaster Services unit of the American Red Crossboth in NJ and in Williamsburg, the SocialMinistry of St. Bede’s Church, is a driver forMeals on Wheels, volunteers at the KimballTheatre for Colonial Williamsburg, hasvolunteered with Elderhostel for William &Mary, is a Pilot Advisor for the YouthAeronautical Education Foundation, is Treasurerfor the Spotswood Senior Golf Assn, is aninstructor and A/V committee member for theChristopher Wren Association at William &Mary and is a battlefield tour guide for theNational Park Service at the YorktownBattlefield for the past 16 years.Doug’s presentation is titled:“Following the 4 major players to themomentous battle of Yorktown”October2015Page 4
