Rocky Mountain Train Show HistoryShow grows from humblebeginnings to largestwest of MississippiBy Bob Oursler & Ron StowellRocky Mountain DivisionOur Rocky Mountain Train Show hasa very unique and interesting path to becoming the most diverse, largest toy andreal train exhibition and show west of theMississippi River. The Rocky Mountain Division of TheTrain Collectors Association aka: RMD/TCA is proud to host “The Rocky Mountain Train Show” the first week in Marcheach year.Although we currently sponsor ourshow at the Denver Merchandise Martwith 120,000 square feet of display areaand attendance in the 10,000 to 12,000range, our beginnings were of a muchmore modest nature.RMD/TCA, since its inception, has beena bit of a “Renegade” division and tendedto “think outside the box.” As a result, oneof our ideas was to create a hobby trainshow that would be of interest not only toour membership but also to the generalpublic. So, some 40 years ago, the RMD/TCAannounced our first “RMD Holiday Meet.”This meet was hosted Thanksgiving weekend of 1976 at The Holiday Inn in Aurora. Our “RMD Holiday Show” grew to an attendance of approximately 2,500, andthen, as with many shows of this naturebegan to stagnate and saw attendance begin to decline.Everything you need to model is here at the show!Tucked on the shelves in vendor boothsthat line the aisles at this year’s Rocky Mountain Train Show is a world waiting to be built.Cars and locomotives, scenery materials, track and electronics that offer realism areavailable to bring any model railroad or diorama to life.Best of all, with improved ready-to-runproducts, bare pieces of plywood can betransformed into breathtaking scenes withjust a little time and effort. In the pages of this program, you’ll findmanufacturers and dealers who have thenecessary products to help you create amodel railroad empire of any level of detail. The N-scale Whitehurst & Pine RidgeRailroad, the Cowcatcher Magazine’s officialmodel railroad, is proof that model railroads123Photo courtesy Cowcatcher MagazineBeing as The Rocky Mountain Divisionwas the first TCA Division to welcome thepublic to TCA shows in the early 1980s;our division began to be and to this day,is still considered one of the premier andmost innovative divisions of TCA.In 2009, the club formed a committeeto look at solutions to revitalize the show. The decision was made to invest our division resources and move our show toa major and first class exhibition facility,The Denver Mart.To back up our “new and expanded”show, it was determined that we wouldneed to invest in a much more professional and wider reaching advertisingprogram.  As our show began to becomeknown on a local, regional and nationalbasis, and our attendance continued to in-Rocky Mountain Train Show 2018 Page 4crease each year, we felt it was importantto continue investing significantly in theadvertising program. Many thanks need to be extended tothe dedicated hard work of many of ourRMD/TCA members, which have donatedtheir time, efforts and resources to ourclub in general and specifically to our various shows throughout the year. Withoutthese folks, our “Rocky Mountain TrainShow” could not have become a toy trainmeet of this style and quality.Of course, a show of this magnitudecould never succeed without the spectacular support and attendance of someof the finest toy train and hobby manufacturers in the world. Although the list islong they deserve a mention.Manufacturersincluding Athearn,Bachmann, Blackstone Models, BroadwayLimited, Chooch Enterprises, Evan Designs, ExactRail, Hunterline, Intermountain Railway, Kadee, Kato, LGB, Lionel,Marklin, Micro-Trains, MTH, NCE, NorthAmerican Railcar, Rapido Trains, ScaleTrains.com, Scenic Express, SoundTraxx,Stoddarts Ltd, Sundance Marketing,Trainz, Trix, Tutweiler Fine Art, TW TrainWorx, Weathering Solutions and WhiteRiver productions, have assisted theRMD/TCA in creating the most widely attended must- see train show west of theMississippi River. Many of the components to create thisscene depicted on the N-scale Whitehurst& Pine Ridge Railroad are available frommanufacturers and dealers at this year’sRocky Mountain Train Show.4567can be constructed with a combination ofready-to-run products and hand-crafted kits.Much of the freelanced pike, which isnearly as old as the Rocky Mountain TrainShow, was built with commercially produced scenery products, structures, paints, weathering supplies, ready-to-run cars andlocomotives and pre-assembled track andturnouts.Today, there are more highly detailedcars, locomotives, buildings and scenery kitsavailable than ever before. Many are madeto plant on the layout in minutes.Building a realistic model is quick andeasy. All it takes is a little time and imagination.COMING SOON!Specializing inmodel trainstarter sets!Rocky Mountain Train Show 2018 Page 131. Paints for creating backdrops2. It was only natural that heattended college with an intention ofa railroad career, which he fulfilledworking for the Katy Railroad aftergraduation.Later, after earning an MBA, Rubleworked in small business and middlemarket finance, and soon found himselfleading clients in two areas – structuringthe acquisition of Class I branch linespin-offs as short line railroads anddeveloping conscious, empoweredemployee-owned businesses. After a couple of decades in this role,he decided to marry his twin passionsfor trains and conscious capitalism andfounded Marquette Rail. Establishedfrom the very beginning as a 60 percentemployee-owned company, MQTacquired a 126-mile CSX branch linerunning north out of Grand Rapids, Mich.,in 2005. Marquette enjoyed significantsuccess, due in no small part to theconscious capitalism model, in whichthere is a higher purpose to a companythan just the bottom line. After the successful sale of Marquetteto RailAmerica in 2012, Ruble lookedabout and in 2016 the retirement ofDuane and Joanna Miller, owners ofDenver’s iconic Caboose Hobbies, provided the perfect opportunity tocontinue his passion for railroading.Today, Ruble builds upon this rich 80year heritage as, simply Caboose.Ruble is now taking Caboose in newdirections and applying this consciousbusiness model to lead and serve theworldwide tribe of train enthusiasts inRocky Mountain Train Show 2018 Page 7the enjoyment of their passion. Cabooseis conveniently located at 10800 WestAlameda in Lakewood, Colo., yet enjoys aworldwide following of over 80,000 loyalcustomers.
