rocky mountain orthodontics companyprofilecompanyprofileDr. Achie BrusseIntroductionSince the 1930’s, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics (RMO ), hasmade dramatic advances in the science of orthodontics, establishingdramatically improves people’s lives. Since its formal incorporation,RMO has been known as a company of energy and ideas - traitsthat remain at the core of the company’s philosophy today. RMO is much more than a business and model of excellence amongColorado corporations. The company is the oldest privately heldand orthodontics itself. In the BeginningBefore the advent of stainless steel, and prior to the foundingof RMO , orthodontists had to be skilled craftsman as wellas doctors. In fact, much of their time was spent devising, constructing, and maintaining their own oral appliances. Becausethose appliances were typically fabricated from gold alloy, which tended to loosen in a short period of time, a large part of anorthodontist’s work was dedicated to repairing and adjusting theappliances after they had been put into use. The orthodontist’s jobdemanded mechanical skill, diligence, and even artistry. And yes,for all of the effort involved, the occupation was often less thanrewarding. Even the best orthodontic appliances of the day werewoefully limited in their effectiveness.8PRODUCTCATALOGhim to learn about the family business as well as the complexities of theorthodontic industry. All of that changed with the development of versatile stainless steel alloys coupled with the ingenuity and foresight of RMO ’s founder,Dr. Achie Brusse, a pioneer Denver orthodontist. With a small butcapable staff, and with help from an executive at the American Steeland Wire Company, RMO prefabricated orthodontic appliance system options; using stainlesssteel as the major component versus gold. After much clinicalunveiled in 1933 at the annual meeting of the American Associationof Orthodontists, in Oklahoma City, OK. Reception was limited, and most recognized leaders of that time felt the applianceswould not work.In time, the impact of these prefabricated devices on the worldof orthodontics was dramatic. Simply put, they changed theface of dentistry. The wide variety of appliance shapes and sizessupplied by RMO enabled orthodontists to treat a diverse arrayof patients more effectively. RMO can be proud of the loyalty and the efforts of the employeesand the local commercial suppliers who have helped it succeed andadvance during the company’s history. RMO is, by all measures, aninternational standard, poised to build upon its legacy of excellencefor decades to come. Dr. Archie Brusse was an early adherent to thesynergistic approach to orthodontic appliances and treatment options.Martin had received the Bronze Star Metal as a member of the 10thMountain Division in World War II. After the war, he attendedDartmouth University where he received his degree.Martin BrusseOver the years he quietly searched for the exceptional individual(s) hewould someday entrust with the continuing the family legacy. Martinselected to continue guiding RMO into the future: Tony Zakhem,CEO & Chairman and Jody Hardy, President.and other colleagues including: Jack Meehan, Bay Brunson, SamBulkley and Martin Hamilton. With continued mentoring and encouragement from Uncle Walt,Martin joined him along with Dr. Brusse and RMO as the companyentered the prosperity of the post-war boom. The decades thatfollowed were host to RMO innovation and orthodontic breakthroughscompetitive industry. The legacy Dr. Archie Brusse handed down toMartin celebrated seventy-six years in business as a private companywith strong performance at the time of Martin’s passing.Under Martin’s leadership, RMO developed over 60 internationaldealerships around the world and has been awarded twice with thePresident’s distinguished “E-Star Award for Exports” by the U.S.Secretary of Commerce For continued outstanding contributors to theExport Expansion Program of the United States of America.Martin earned many good friends and business associates around theworld, but he did not have offspring to mentor as his father before him.Tony Zakhem, CEO & Chairman andJody Hardy, PresidentCOMPANYPROFILE9
