IntroductionTHE IMPORTANCE OF BIBLICALCHRONOLOGYTHE BIBLE IS UNIQUE when compared with all other circular. That is, history has a beginning and an ending. It is going“holy books” of the world’s religions. One reason the Bible somewhere and has purpose and meaning. It began in a garden and isis different is the fact it is the only religious work rooted in moving toward a city, with a cross in between. The writer of Hebrews said, “By faith we understand that thepast history that also predicts future history. All other religions of theworld, unless they rely on the Bible at some point, do not rise or fall worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was noton whether they are historically true. These other religions are based made out of things which are visible” (Hebrews 11:3). In this context, upon a philosophy or an ethical way of life and do not stand or col- the Greek word translated “worlds” (aiönas) means “ages” (aeons) orlapse on whether they are historically accurate. Thissays actually happened in history or will occur in the future. Because could only be if He were the planner and implementer of history. Godthe Bible is God’s revelation of Himself and it presents His outline and planned all the events in history and revealed their meaning, purpose, interpretation of history, it follows that biblical chronology is included and significance through His Word. This is why studying the chronoin God’s Word and is an extremely important element in His revela- logical data presented in the Bible is so important! As we look carefullyat biblical chronology, we gain a proper understanding of the flow oftion to mankind. Many religions and worldviews believe history is an endless cycle events and their relationship to one another in God’s plan. The Bible tells us who we are as human beings, our purposeof events continually repeating themselves, and thus they concludethat life is meaningless because, from their perspective, it is going for being here on planet Earth, how long we have been here, whatnowhere. By contrast, the biblical view of history is linear and not we are called to do, and where we are headed in the future. 1WHY A CHART BOOK ONBIBLE CHRONOLOGY?THERE’S A POPULAR PROVERB that suggests “a pictureis worth a thousand words.” If that is true, good charts areworth a thousand words when it comes to illustrating chronological relationships as revealed in the Bible. The value of chronology charts is that they enable us to pinpoint the timing of the eventsdescribed in Scripture and show their relationship to each other. Witha chart, we can summarize a subject or theme that, in written form, might take pages to explain. In this book, you will find virtually allthe key chronological information from the Bible and how it relatesto the passage of time. One key distinctive of biblical Christianity is that God knows andreveals the past, the present, and the future (Isaiah 46:8-11). Only Godcan do that. Thus, the past and future are settled, and are not opento change. This means we can look at the charts in this book with anassurance that the biblical teachings they portray have taken place orwill take place precisely as the Bible says. Because God conceived Hisplan for history before creation, we can have confidence that eventsfrom the past and future have and will take place exactly as He hasdecreed. Such a realization enables us to fully participate in God’songoing plan for history with great confidence. Our prayer is that Charting the Bible Chronologically will enableyou to gain a better grasp of what Scripture reveals about what hashappened, what is happening, and what will happen in the future.A Timeline of HistoryAccording to the BibleIt is often said that the big questions in life are these: Who are you?Where did you come from? And, Where are you going? The Bible hasthe answers to all three questions. The Lord says,Remember this, and be assured; recall it to mind, youtransgressors. Remember the former things long past, forI am God, and there is no other; I am God, and thereis no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not beendone, saying, “My purpose will be established, and I willWhy a Chart Book on Bible Chronology?    9Copyrighted materialCharting the Bible Chronologically.indd 98/16/16 3:33 PM
