As the world continues totransition from print to digital — in everything from personal medical recordsto encyclopedias, college textbooks to online banking — the public libraryremains front and center in providing free multimedia tools for patrons. The Genesee District Library remains committed to leveraging the latesttechnologies to bring modern library services to our residents.Case in point, in 2015 the GDL: Saw a 70% increase in Wi-Fi usage due to an investment in new wireless hardware at all 19 branches. Our free Internet is eight times faster than it was just a few years ago. In addition to a catalogue boasting over 20,000 e-books, our patrons also have access to over 100e-magazines. Freegal, our free online music database, allows patrons to download — and keep — fivesongs per week. They also have unlimited access to free music streaming. People expect speed and convenience, and we provide it. The GDL website is now mobile responsive.Surf our catalogues from your phone while you’re standing in line at the grocery store, or researchnew cars with our Consumer Reports database while you’re getting your oil changed. But it’s not all about technology. The library continues to be a warm, inviting place to browse, and agreat learning place for kids. In 2015 we hired a Children’s Librarian to provide expertise and supportto our branch librarians, parents, children and schools.Public libraries are not reinventing themselves. Rather, they are simply doing what they do best — providingfree access to ideas and information. It’s just the tools that are different.David Conklin,Library Director“In the nonstop tsunami of global information, librarians provide us with floaties and teach us to swim.” Linton Weeks, NPR Digital News and Former Washington Post writerLeadershipLibrary DirectorDavid ConklinLibrary BoardWilliam Delaney, ChairLinda Ryals-Massey, Vice-ChairCathy Lane, TreasurerWhitney S.
