AGENCY NEWS04Seniors Living Alone Are Encouraged to Register With JFS StormAlert Team, JFS Seeking VolunteersJFS has created a Storm Alert Team and is activelyencouraging seniors living alone in Boca Raton,Delray Beach and Highland Beach to register withJFS before any major weather event. By doing so,our volunteers can check on them when needed. 09The Jim Moran Foundation Renews Its Support ofthe JFS Meals on Wheels ProgramJFS extends our sincere gratitude to The Jim Moran Foundationfor not only continuing their funding of the JFS Meals on Wheelsprogram for another two years, but for a generous increase in theirlevel of support. The JFS Meals on Wheels Program deliversprepared meals to homebound, frail, and disabled seniors whomight otherwise be unable to access nutritious food or preparetheir own meals. Over 150 seniors in the JFS service area areprovided with nutritionally balanced kosher meals and that numbercontinues to grow.In addition to delivering meals right to the door, volunteers whodeliver food are able to check on the well-being of our recipientsand determine if they have additional needs. Through the MealsOn Wheels program, JFS and The Jim Moran Foundation respondto a critical call to action to combat senior hunger and provide forthe needs of seniors so that they are able to safely age in theirhomes. While in rehab and learningto adjust to her new normal, shewas very concerned about how shewould be able to live life withoutrelying on others.She wasfrightened by the thought of sellingher car and becoming homebound.It was during her therapy that shelearned that her car could bemodified with a special hand break.Her medical expenses ate up all ofher savings and had nowhere toturn. SENIOR SERVICES12JFS Together with Greenberg Traurig and Bet Tzedek,provides Local Holocaust Survivors with EstatePlanning ServicesBet Tzedek worked with JFS and global law firm GreenbergTraurig, LLP, to provide south Palm Beach County Holocaustsurvivors with pro bono advance planning (estate planning)services in an effort to help combat the stigma survivors oftenassociate with advance planning. The goal is to help make themfeel comfortable that their dignity will be preserved in times ofillness or incapacity.HOLOCAUST SURVIVORHEROESGreenberg Traurig, LLPand Bet TzedekA grant from the Jewish Federations of North America made itpossible for Bet Tzedek to expand the free legal services offeredby its Holocaust Survivors Justice Network (HSJN) to includeadvance planning services for Holocaust survivors nationwide.Prior to the first clinic, Bet Tzedek’s HSJN administrator KobiPenland, trained Greenberg Traurig associates on personcentered, trauma-informed (PCTI) care, so that survivors werenot re-traumatized during the process, a possibility in this type ofsituation. Jared Baumwell and Benjamin Babcock, associates inGreenberg Traurig’s Fort Lauderdale office, led the firm’s efforts.They were assisted by 10 additional associates from the firm’sFort Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm Beach offices.JFS and Greenberg Traurig said that they plan to hold one to twoclinics a year. The summer eventtakes place in June and the winter event in December. Close to 500 survivors from Boynton Beachthrough North Broward County gathered for lunch, dancing and socialization with fellow survivors. 14Over 100 Holocaust Clients Come Together Quarterly ForNosh & Nachas ProgramEach quarter, “Nosh & Nachas”, translated literally as “food and happiness”, provides Holocaust survivors the opportunityto socialize with each other and enjoy a truly meaningful and valuable experience that fosters kinship and improves theirwell-being. This year’s event waseven more special as it was led by Illana &Samy Dwek, who with the help of studentsfrom FAU Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach,Israeli American Council - IAC Mishelanu andDonna Klein Jewish Academy, provided ourguests with an extraordinary Passover Sederexperience.Through PCTI Program, JFS HostedRenowned Genocide Studies ExpertThrough our Person Centered Trauma Informed (PCTI) Care Program,JFS had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Irit Felsen, a clinical specialist andmember of the Yale Trauma Study Group: Genocide Studies Program.During her visit, Dr. Felsen conducted two workshops (one with staff,one with members of the community) that were highly educationaland provided our staff with additional tools to help us learn from ourHolocaust survivors.During the evening session, which was open to the public, Dr. Felsenspoke about second generation Holocaust survivors, about theirunique traumas and needs. This session also helped these childrenof survivors have a deeper understanding of their aging parents.Dr. Felsen concluded her visit by moderating a focus group for localHolocaust survivors. JFS HIRES SHARON BURNS-CARTER, CERTIFIED ADDICTION COUNSELOR,AS SUBSTANCE USE COORDINATOR, TO FACILITATE EFFORTSIn an effort to address the substance use crisis in our community, JFS hascreated a new substance use program, “JFS CARES” (Community AwarenessResources and Education for Jewish Families with loved one suffering withSubstance use disorders). This program will focus on education, preventionand build awareness within the Jewish Community. In addition, a task forcecomprised of various stakeholders interested in helping JFS develop thisprogram, has been established. JFS is working in partnership with sisteragency, Alpert Jewish Family Service, and both Jewish Federations servingPalm Beach County.JFS has hired Sharon Burns-Carter, Certified Addiction Counselor, as our Sharon Burns-Carter, CAC,Substance Use Coordinator for south Palm Beach County. In this role, Sharon JFS Substance Usewill provide direct family support, information and resources to struggling Outreach Coordinatorfamilies and individuals. She will also spearhead efforts related to programming.For the past several years, she has served as a volunteer and advisor to the Jewish Recovery Center, andwill continue to work in this capacity under the direction of Rabbi Meir Kessler, connecting families torecovery in a Jewish context.Carter and the Task Force have developed a Substance Use Resource Guide which lists all known groupsmeeting in local Jewish institutions and includes information on how to access other meetings takingplace around the county. During September, National Recovery Month, JFS CARES announced thelaunch of “Our Kids Know About Drugs, Do We?” a community educational series which will run fromOctober through January.
