Intercessory Saints for MayLa SaletteReflectionsSaint Scholastica and Saint BenedictPatron saints of religious lifeFr. Rene Butler, M.S.andWayne VanasseLoved and Chosen(6th Sunday of Easter: Acts 10:25-48; 1 John 4:7-10; John15:9-17)Jesus tells his disciples, “It was not you who chose me, but Iwho chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that willremain.” They already knew that, of course, but now, on theeve of his passion, it was an important reminder. The samewords have resonated through the ages, to every generationof believers. That includes every one of us.Maximin and Mélanie did not choose the Blessed Virgin. Shechose them. Starting with them, her message, too, has bornefruit that will remain. The choice is not exclusive. In today’s first reading, St. Peterand his companions, in the house of Cornelius, “wereastounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit should have beenpoured out on the Gentiles also, for they could hear themspeaking in tongues and glorifying God.” They could have nobetter confirmation of Peter’s words, “God shows nopartiality.”Thus, the words of today’s Psalm are true: “All the ends of theearth have seen the salvation by our God.”The Holy Spirit came as a gift, bringing gifts which the Churchcalls charisms. The charism of La Salette is not something wechose for ourselves. On the contrary, it drew us to itself. Weare its ministers, proclaiming reconciliation to all the ends ofthe earth. But let us not forget today’s other readings, all about love. When Jesus tells us to love one another, he provides thefoundation and the model: “as I have loved you.” This meansfirst that we must really believe he loves us, and accept hislove. Then, we must strive to imitate it—a challenge echoed inthe second reading. One of the most beautiful love poems in literature begins withthe words, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” If welisten to Jesus with our heart, can we hear him counting theways he loves us?As La Salettes, perhaps we need only look at the crucifix overthe Beautiful Lady’s heart. On that holy mountain, sheappeared at a time and in a place that needed a message oflove and tender mercy. So let our prayer be to accept God’s undying love, and to liveit, glorifying God in word and deed, speaking in tongues ofLove (with or without words).Wayne Vanasse, and Fr. René Butler, M.S.10Born in 480 in Nursia, Italy of wealthy parents, twinsScholastica and Benedict were brought up together untilBenedict left central Italy for Rome. After studying inRome, living as a hermit and leading groups of monks,Benedict founded a monastery in Monte Cassino, Italy. While there, he wrote a rule by which the monks wouldlive that allowed for a simple life combining work andprayer while living in community. Five miles away, atPlombariola, Scholastica and a group of women built aconvent, and they followed Benedict’s rule as well. Theygathered seven times a day to pray and praise God. Eachweek, they prayed all the Psalms of the Old Testament. The twins visited each other once a year in a farmhousebetween the two religious communities and talked aboutthe great goodness of God and how they could help others follow the example of Jesus.ReflectionScholastica and Benedict gave themselves totally to Godand gave top priority to deepening their friendship withhim through prayer. They sacrificed some of the opportunities they would have had to be together as brother andsister in order better to fulfill their vocation to the religiouslife. In joining a religious community, they did not forget orforsake their family but rather found more brothers andsisters.Saint Scholastica and Saint Benedict pray for us!
