GENERAL REGULATIONSAdopted: May 14, 2015Effective: June 30, 20151.2 The equipment is located in an isolated or remote area1.3 The size of the equipment is 65,000 Btu/hr or less2. In existing buildings condensate may be collected andconveyed to a cooling tower or discharged to an approvedplace of disposal.307.2.1 Condensate drainage collection, use or disposal.Condensate from all cooling coils and evaporators ofequipment served by an onsite cooling tower in a buildingor structure wherein the a ggregate cooling capacity of t heequipment exceeds 65,000 Btu/hr shall be collected andconveyed from the drai n pan outlet and discharged to thecooling tower. Where an on-site cooling tower is notinstalled the condensate from all co oling coils andevaporators shall be conveyed from the drain pan outlet toan approved place of disposal. Such piping shall maintain aminimum horizontal slope in the direction of discharge ofnot less than one-eighth unit vertical in 12 units horizontal(1-percent slope). Condensate shall not discharge into astreet, alley or other areas so as to cause nuisance .Exceptions:1. Condensate from cooling coils and evaporators is notrequired to be collected and conveyed to an on-site coolingtower; provided 1.1 through 1.3 are met:1.1 The equipment comprises 10% or less of the totalcapacity of the cooling tower systemFLORIDA BUILDING CODE – MECHANICAL, 5TH EDITION (2014)3.7

CHAPTER 9SPECIFIC APPLIANCES, FIREPLACESAND SOLID FUEL-BURNING EQUIPMENT901.1SECTION 901GENERALScope. This chapter shall govern the approval, design,installation, construction, maintenance, alteration and repairof the appliances and equipment specifically identified hereinand factory-built fireplaces. The approval, design, installa tion, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of gas fired appliances shall be regulated by the Florida Building901.2901.31901.4Code, Fuel Gas.General. The requirements of this chapter shall applyto the mechanical equipment and appliances regulated by thischapter, in addition to the other requirements of this code.Hazardous locations. Fireplaces and solid fuel-burn ing appliances shall not be installed in hazardous locations.Fireplace accessories. Listed and labeled fireplaceaccessories shall be installed in accordance with the condi tions of the listing and the manufacturer's instructions. Fire place accessories shall comply with UL 907.902.1General. Masonry fireplaces shall be constructed inSECTION 903FACTORY-BUILT FIREPLACESGeneral. Factory-built fireplaces shall be listed andlabeled and shall be installed in accordance with the condi tions of the listing. Factory-built fireplaces shall be tested inaccordance with UL 127.Hearth extensions. Hearth extensions of approved factory-built fireplaces shall be installed in accordance with thelisting of the fireplace. The hearth extension shall be readilydistinguishable from the surrounding floor area. Listed andlabeled hearth extensions shall comply with UL 1618.Unvented gas log heaters. An unvented gas log heatershall not be installed in a factory-built fireplace unless thefireplace system has been specifically tested, listed andlabeled for such use in accordance with UL 127.904.1905.2905.3Connection to fireplace. The connection of solid fuelappliances to chimney flues serving fireplaces shall complywith Sections 801.7 and 801.10.Hearth extensions. Hearth extensions for fireplacestoves shall be installed in accordance with the listing of thefireplace stove. The hearth extension shall be readily distin guishable from the surrounding floor area. Listed and labeledhearth extensions shall comply with UL 1618.906.1IGeneral. Factory-built barbecue appliances shall be ofan approved type and shall be installed in accordance withthe manufacturer's installation instructions, this chapter andChapters 3, 5, 7, 8 and the Florida Building Code, Fuel Gas.907.1SECTION 907INCINERATORS AND CREMATORIESGeneral. Incinerators and crematories shall be listedand labeled in accordance with UL 791 and shall be installedin accordance with the manufacturer's installation instruc tions.SECTION 908COOLING TOWERS, EVAPORATIVE CONDENSERSAND FLUID COOLERS90S.190S.290S.3General. A cooling tower used in conjunction with anair-conditioning appliance shall be installed in accordancewith the manufacturer's installation instructions. Factory-builtcooling towers shall be listed in accordance with UL 1995.Access. Cooling towers, evaporative condensers andfluid coolers shall be provided with ready access.SECTION 904PELLET FUEL-BURNING APPLIANCESGeneral. Pellet fuel-burning appliances shall be listedand labeled in accordance with ASTM E 1509 and shall beinstalled in accordance with the terms of the listing.FLORIDA BUILDING CODE - MECHANICAL, 5th EDITIONGeneral. Fireplace stoves and solid-fuel-type roomheaters shall be listed and labeled and shall be installed inaccordance with the conditions of the listing. Fireplace stovesshall be tested in accordance with UL 737. Solid-fuel-typeroom heaters shall be tested in accordance with UL 1482.Fireplace inserts intended for installation in fireplaces shallbe listed and labeled in accordance with the requirements ofUL 1482 and shall be installed in accordance with the manu facturer's installation instructions.SECTION 906FACTORY-BUILT BARBECUE APPLIANCESSECTION 902MASONRY FIREPLACESaccordance with the Florida Building Code, Building.903.1903.2I 903.3905.1SECTION 905FIREPLACE STOVES AND ROOM HEATERS(2014)Location. Cooling towers, evaporative condensers andfluid coolers shall be located to prevent the discharge vaporplumes from entering occupied spaces. Plume dischargesshall be not less than 5 feet (1524 mm) above or 20 feet (6096mm) away from any ventilation inlet to a building. Location9.1I

SPECIFIC APPLIANCES, FIREPLACES AND SOLID FUEL‐BURNING EQUIPMENTAdopted: May 14, 2015Effective: June 30, 2015908.5.1 New cooling towers, including cooling tower replacementsshall be operated with conductivity controllers, as well as make-upand blowdown (bleed off) meters and shall achieve a minimum of 8cycles of concentration.908.5.2 The quality of cooling tower water shall comply with theequipment manufacturer’s guidelines.908.5.3 Cooling towers shall be equipped with efficient drifteliminators that achieve drift reduction to a maximum of 0.002% ofthe recirculated water volume for counterflow towers and 0.005% ofthe recirculated water flow for cross-flow towers.908.5.4 An affidavit of compliance demonstrating compliance withsection 908.5 Florida Building Code shall be submitted by theproperty manager/owner to the local water provider every 12 monthsfollowing system installation. The affidavit shall be signed by theservice provider and include all dates of service within the reportingperiod and verified system operation at a minimum of 8 cycles ofconcentration.Exception: Cooling water tower systems utilizing reclaimed waterfor makeup water are exempt from the provisions of section 908.5.1thru 908.5.4 Florida Building Code-Mechanical.9.2FLORIDA BUILDING CODE ‐ MECHANICAL, 5TH EDITION (2014)
