What it takesto keep families andbusinessesconnected.High-speedconnectionHow does wireless service work?Radio frequencies can carry signals from radios andtelevisions, to baby monitors, garage door openers,home Wi-Fi service, and cordless phones.Cell service uses these radio frequencies towirelessly connect a mobile device with the nearestantenna. That antenna may be hidden in a churchsteeple, sitting on a rooftop, attached to a buildingfaçade or mounted on a freestanding towerstructure. Different locationsrequire differentsolutions.Verizon uses a balancedapproach to engineering thebest possible network giventhe local community’s needs.Traditional, or macro cell sites, aremost often the best choice formeeting coverage and capacityneeds. Macro sites are traditional cellsites or towers that provide coverageto a broad area, up to several miles.Small cells are just like the nameimplies – short range cell sites usedto complement macro cell towers in asmaller geographic area ranging froma few hundred feet to upwards of1,000 feet. These lower powerantennas enhance capacity in hightraffic areas, dense urban areas,suburban neighborhoods, and more.Small cells use small radios and asingle antenna placed on existingstructures including utility poles andDistributed Antenna Systems street lights.(DAS) are a group of antennas inoutdoor or indoor locations thatconnect to a base station. DASsystems are typically used inlarge venues including stadiumsand shopping centers.

Wireless coverage may already exist in anarea, but with data usage growth increasingexponentially each year, more capacity isneeded. Verizon gathers information from many sources includingcustomer feedback, results of our own exhaustive networktesting, and data from third parties.Finding theright location.When an area for improvement is identified, utilizing ourexisting network is always our first effort. If that is not possible,we then look at adding a new site.To meet customer needs andexpectations, wireless providersneed the ability to expand and enhancetheir networks where users live, work,travel and play.Steps to finding a new siteOur engineers analyze the areas that need improvementto figure out the ideal location based on customer needs,terrain and modeling results.Using existing structures is considered first.Network teams perform exhaustive searches in thearea needing improvement to find a location that will meet ourtechnical needs.
