Terms and Concepts A configured item is comprised of different featuresrequested by a customer, for example, a forklift. Theconfigured item name can be alphanumeric. You associatesegments with the configured item. For example, theconfigured item FORKLIFT-A contains the followingsegments:FORKLIFT-A Segment 10 (Lift Rating)Segment 20 (Power Type)Segment 30 (Boom Height)When you set up a configured item, you define segmentsto represent characteristics of a configured item, such asan optional paint color or a lift rating. For example:Segment 10 (Lift Rating) 2000 pounds4000 pounds6000 poundsSegment 40 (Paint) STANDARDCUSTOMA segment might also be called a feature or an option. During sales order entry, the system joins the segmentsand expresses the configuration as a string of segmentsseparated by a delimiter. For example:2000/PROPANE/10/BLUE/P Release A7.3 (June 1996)You can set up a configured subassembly within aconfigured item. For example, the configured itemFORKLIFT-A contains a configured subassembly for aBOOM.1–5

Configuration Management Use crossĆsegment editing rules to establish therelationships between the configured item segments withlogic statements. This enables you to avoid invalidcombinations and prevent invalid sales orders. The systemedits the segments on the sales order against thesecrossĆsegment editing rules and displays error messagesfor information that violates the rules. For example: segment 10 (Lift Rating) 6000 pounds, segment30 (Boom Height) must 12 (feet) segment 30 mustbe 10 (feet). Use assembly inclusion rules to translate requestedoptions and values from sales order entry into the specificcomponents, operations, and calculated values necessaryto build and price the configured item. For example: segment 10 6000 segment 30 10, use partF170, use part F175.Analyzing Your Configured ItemBefore you work with Configuration Management, ensure that you can answerthe following questions about your configured items: How do customers order the configured item? How will the configured item be priced? Which components make up the configured items? Which routings do the configured items require? Which calculations are required to support prices, components, androuting steps? This information will help you determine the sequence of questions. This isimportant because you can define levels of questions within multiĆlevelconfigured items. Knowing this information before you set up this system willsave time during setup.1–6Release A7.3 (June 1996)
