Enrollment and Course Requirements – This document contains the internship coursedescription, information about prerequisites, enrollment information, and course requirements.2. Internship Application Form – Internship applicant must complete and submit this form prior toadmission to the internship class.3. Internship Confirmation Form– Internship applicant must complete the top part:a) Student name;b) Bear number; andc) Bearmail addressStudent must then take the form to the Internship Site Supervisor for completion of the bottompart of the form. This includes the following:a) Semester that the internship is to take place;b) Number of contact hours to be completed by the student intern;c) Agency name and contact information;d) Agency Site Supervisor’s name and contact information; ande) Site Supervisor’s signature and date.This form must be received during the registration process before you can enroll in theInternship class. No late registrations will be granted.4. Internship Hours Log – Once accepted as an intern, this form must be completed and approvedweekly. It shall be submitted at the end of the semester to the Internship Coordinator.5. Department of Criminal JusticeCRJ 492 Internship (3-6 credit hours)Enrollment and Course RequirementsCOURSE DESCRIPTIONThe Criminal Justice Internship provides students with a supervised field experience in a justice agency.The student is responsible for securing placement prior to course enrollment. Credit can be earned onlyfor work completed during the semester in which the student is enrolled in the course. This course isgraded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. Students must register for a minimum of 3 credit hours. Amaximum of 6 credit hours is possible, but only 3 can be used toward the CRJ major. Credit hours 4-6will count as university electives toward the 120 hours needed to graduate.PREREQUISITES You must be a CRJ major or minor.You must have completed CRJ 110 with a minimum grade of “C” or better (C- is not acceptable).You must have at least Junior standing (i.e., 60 semester hours) when your internship begins.HOW TO ENROLL1. Students are responsible for securing their own internship placement. Do this by reviewing theapproved agencies in the Internship Catalog (www.unco.edu/criminaljustice/internships.html), bycontacting the listed contact person to find out more about the internship experience they offer,and then by scheduling an interview with the agencies of interest to you.2. Because the Criminal Justice Department must anticipate the number of interns who will enrolleach semester, please complete and submit to the Internship Coordinator an InternshipApplication Form when you have narrowed your choice of agencies to 3 or fewer possibilities.This form should be submitted even before you have received formal acceptance by an agency.3. After an agency has accepted you as an intern, the Internship Confirmation Form must becompleted and sent to the Internship Coordinator. Please complete the top part of the formthen have the Field/Site Supervisor complete and sign the form. Deliver the signed form toInternship Coordinator (scanned and attached to an email, hand delivered to CAND 2285, orfaxed to 970-351-1527).4. After receiving the Internship Confirmation Form, the Internship Coordinator will open aposition for the intern to enroll in the Internship Course CRJ 492 offered each semester. Thengo to Blackboard to find access to your section.NOTE: This process must be completed before the ADD date each semester (see the relevant calendarat tm). Students will not be allowed in theInternship course after the ADD date, so it is important to arrange your internship as soon as possible.Enrollment preference is on a “first come, first served” basis. Class size is limited.

COURSE REQUIREMENTSThe intern must: Complete 50 hours of agency contact for each credit hour enrolled (e.g., to receive 3 credits youmust complete 150 contact hours).Provide on the Blackboard Discussion Board weekly updates of the hours completed that weekwith a brief sentence or two, comment about your duties/activities with the agency during theweek, and comment each week on at least two posts made by your fellow intern classmates.Submit a 2-4 page report no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Monday of finals week. The reportshould (1) identify your internship agency and your Field/Site Supervisor; (2) provide anoverview of the highlights of your experience; (3) indicate the similarities and differencesbetween the internship experience and material from relevant criminal justice courses; (4)describe any ethical issues that arose during your internship and explain how they wereresolved; and then (5) conclude with lessons learned and how this experience has influencedyour career goals.Receive a satisfactory final evaluation by your Field/Site Supervisor.REQUIRED FORMSThe student is responsible for ensuring that all required forms are completed by the necessary peopleand submitted to the Internship Coordinator prior to course enrollment. The forms are listed andexplained below and can be downloaded at ml . Internship Application Form—This form starts the enrollment process and should be providedto the Internship Coordinator during the preregistration period prior to the start of the semesterin which you plan to do the internship.Internship Confirmation Form—This form is necessary before you can enroll in the course. Itmust be completed by your Field/Site Supervisor at your internship agency. Once the InternshipCoordinator has received the form he will open a position so that you may enroll in CRJ 492.Internship Hours Log – This form is necessary to track your internship hours weekly throughoutthe semester. It is completed by you and initialed and dated by your Field/Site Supervisor.Final Evaluation Form—This form will be completed and submitted by your Field/Site Supervisorat the end of the semester.

The student must receive a satisfactory final evaluation from the Field Supervisor.Agency Field/Site Supervisor Responsibilities: Each week the Field/Site Supervisor must approve the completed work hours on the student’sInternship Hours Log During the semester the Field Supervisor may be contacted and asked to provide feedback regarding thestudent’s progress thus far. Obviously, the Field Supervisor is welcome to contact the InternshipCoordinator any time during the semester if questions or problems arise. Near the end of the term, the Field/Site Supervisor will be asked to complete a one-page evaluationform that will be used to determine whether the student completed the internship in a satisfactorymanner.
