Students can complete creditsand make progress towards their educationalgoals during the compact eight-weekSummer semester. SGTC is always eager to partner tobring about opportunities for our community.Science, Technology, Engineeringand Math (STEM) education is a focus forschools nationwide and SGTC is positionedto be a leader. Every program that we offeris an application of the STEM skills thatemployers covet. It isn’t enough to train onlyour current students in STEM fields, we alsoneed to prepare for the future. To that end,SGTC recently hosted 1,000 elementaryand middle school students of our regionto demonstrate the variety of STEMopportunities and careers that are available.This project was a cooperative effort withthe Chattahoochee-Flint RESA, the GeorgiaYouth Science Technology Center (GYSTC)and EATON Lighting.The STEM Day was just one moreway that South Georgia Tech is focused onpreparing and training the workforce fortomorrow. Our highly ranked educationalprograms combined with involvementin outstanding clubs, organizations andathletics allow us to develop the type oftrained leaders in demand in the workforce.Noah McCleskey, a Welding student fromthe Crisp County Center, was spotlightedas South Georgia Tech’s 2018 GeorgiaOccupational Award of Leadership (GOAL)winner and represented the college atthe GOAL and Rick Perkins State AwardConference in Atlanta. Teresa McCook, aCriminal Justice Instructor, also representedSGTC at the same conference as thecollege’s Instructor of the Year.Another outstanding student, ChristianHolloman, was honored recently by theTechnical College System of Georgia asSouth Georgia Tech’s EAGLE (ExceptionalAdult Georgian in Literacy Education)student. Holloman, from Buena Vista,earned his GED and is continuing hiseducational journey by enrolling in the SGTCMarketing program.The South Georgia Technical CollegeJets and Lady Jets basketball squads alsoexcelled this season. The Jets finished insecond place in the Georgia CollegiateAthletic Association Region XVII tournamentand the Lady Jets won the conference, theregional tournament and advanced to theNJCAA National Tournament for the fourthtime in five years. The Lady Jets finishedthe season as one of the top 16 teams inthe nation and Esther “Nike” Adenike, wasselected as the GCAA Player of the Yearas well as a WBCA All-American and anNJCAA first team All-American. She andother sophomore players will continue theirathletic and academic career at four-yearinstitutions.Extra-curricular programs such as SkillsUSA, the National Technical Honor Societyand Phi Beta Lambda are also moldingthe next generation of leaders for ourcommunities. Fifteen students representedSouth Georgia Technical College at theSkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary StateCompetitions in Atlanta recently and threeindividuals were recognized as among thetops in their fields.Bailey Mills of Cordele, an AviationMaintenance student, Calvin Conleyfrom Leesburg and Jacob Grant fromAndersonville, Precision Machiningand Manufacturing students, won GoldMedals in the SkillsUSA state event andwill represent Georgia and South GeorgiaTech at the nationals this summer. Twentyeight students were recently inductedinto the National Technical Honor Societyand 21 students were recognized for theachievements at the Georgia Phi BetaLambda state competition in Atlantarecently.South Georgia Tech is making a namefor itself in the state as well as nationallybecause of the outstanding students and theindividuals who work here. A current, valid military identification card for active duty soldiers or veterans.
