All staff having contact with residents were required towear appropriate PPE and follow enhanced rules for reporting their ownpotential illness. Residents were initially restricted from congregating incommon areas, and group gatherings were also restricted. Communaldining options were eliminated, and all meals were delivered directlyto resident rooms during the onset of the pandemic. Staff must wearmasks when on campus, and residents must wear them when outside oftheir apartments. The communities were closed to visitors on March 15and remained closed until mid-July 2020.Starting in July, the communities began to resume some outsideactivities while maintaining social distancing and other safety protocols.Beauty salons were reopened on July 20, and by August, the wellnesscenters and swimming pools were again open to residents. The pandemic caused a drop in the number of new admissions andapplications. However, the corporate marketing team remained incommunication with prospective residents and organized innovative newmarketing efforts to reach more people. Numbers began to improvetowards the end of 2020.

CEO’s Message - “2020 In our Rearview Mirror”What a year 2020 was . . . . when I look back, there was chaos and confusion, anduncertainty and outright fear. If they could have created a virus to directly and negativelyimpact The Wesley Communities - something unseeable that preys particularly on thehealth of the elderly? Covid-19 might have been it.And yet, in the midst of all of it, there were small bits of joy and silver linings to be found, ifyou looked, and we did look. We all learned to count our blessings despite our fears andour great sorrows.I know everyone who is reading this appreciated all of the staff of The WesleyCommunities, who showed grace and courage and dedication throughout the entire year. The staff understood what was at stake - and their dedication and their loyalty to ourresidents simply shone. Many of you have expressed your gratitude, and I want to thank you, too, for your kindnessand your patience. I knew we would get through it, not just survive, but to thrive. Andthanks to you, we did.Margaret “Peg” CarmanyChief Executive Officer

The Wesley Communities Receive 2020 SilverHealthy Worksite AwardThe Healthy Business Council of Ohio (HBCO) recognized 100 Ohioemployers for healthy worksite practices during the virtual In-Value-AbleVirtual Conference Series in February 2021. Among the recipients beinghonored was The Wesley Communities. The Healthy Worksite Award recognizes Ohio employers who demonstrate acommitment to employee wellness through comprehensive worksite health promotion and wellness programs.Applicants are scored on how their wellness programs facilitate and encourage employee health, enhanceproductivity and ensure a healthy work environment.“I’m very proud that our employee wellness program for The Wesley Communities received the Silver HealthyWorksite Award for the sixth year in a row. 2020 was a challenging year, but our employees still took the time andenergy to focus on their health and wellness,” said The Wesley Communities’ Wellness Coordinator, Spencer Fee.All applications were reviewed and evaluated using objective criteria. Four levels of high achievement wereawarded in 2020 —Bronze, Silver, Gold, and, new in 2020, Platinum. The HBCO chose to add the Platinum levelof achievement in 2020 in an effort to continue to encourage program growth in employer sites throughout thestate who have, in recent years, consistently received the previous maximum achievement level of Gold.“We can all agree that 2020 was a beast of a year for employer sites so this year’s application was modifiedto recognize the extraordinary efforts employers were making to offer employee wellbeing in spite of it all,”explained the Healthy Worksite Award Co-Chair Annie Laurie Cadmus. “Applicants had the option to completea ‘Pandemic Response’ section of the application to share how they adjusted their program offerings andcontinued to offer support to employees during a difficult year.”Wesley Glen’s Annual Anniversary Dinner Celebrates 50 YearsOn the evening of Wednesday, January 8th, 2020, Wesley Glen Retirement Community celebrated theanniversary date of its 50 years of service in Central Ohio. Reminiscing on the years that have gone by since thedoors first opened, those with a connection to the community treated the celebration as a meaningful reflectionof the past, a review of the present, and a look ahead to the promising future. The evening began with an invocation and welcome from Wesley Glen Chaplain Dawn Swartz, followed by athree-course dinner and entertainment by accomplished harpist Rebecca Troutner. Throughout the celebration, many speakers were featured, including The Wesley Communities CEO, Peg Carmany, Wesley Glen’s ExecutiveDirector, Jill Easterling, and Chair, Development Committee of The Wesley Communities Board of Trustees, and Board Member for 50 years, Robert Holm. Each provided heartwarming recollections of just how far ourcommunity has come.Of special notice as well was the rather large group of employees seated at the front of the John LongsworthAuditorium. Each of these employees, while from different career paths and departments, share somethingspecial – all of them are part of our 20 Year Employee Club. With many exceeding the minimum requirement, conversations filled with memories and accomplishments throughout the years could be heard around the room.“It’s amazing to see how many employees have built their careers here at TheWesley Communities. When I look around, I see faces that I’ve worked with since Iwas in my twenties. We are lucky to be part of an organization that truly values theiremployees – it says a lot about the culture,” said Dawn Schaffner, chief operatingofficer and member of the 20 Year Club. The celebration was enjoyed by all in attendance, and now, the Wesley Glencommunity looks forward to continuing to provide exceptional service today, tomorrow, and throughout the next 50 years.

No Golf but Great Mission Appeal for Charitable CareOut of concern for all, we regretfully canceled the 2020 WesleyCommunities Charity Golf Classic. The Classic has historicallybeen our biggest fundraiser each year, with proceeds providingcharitable care for residents. Residents, staff, families, and vendorsjoined with our title sponsor, Hylant, in making a “No Golf but GreatMission” donation. Because there were no expenses, the entire 55,489 was used to support our Fund for Charitable Care. Our Fund for Charitable Care is the natural outgrowth of our mission– “we are a welcoming community of kindness and grace whereresidents and staff thrive.” The Fund provides financial resources toour residents who have depleted their personal finances, throughno fault of their own, and allows them to remain in their safe andsecure homes with us. This peace of mind is a blessing that wecan provide with help from donors like you, and during this time ofincreased COVID-19 expenses, your support of our mission is needed now more than ever.We appreciate the generosity and contributions throughout the last 10 years of the Classic and aresincerely grateful for the donations in 2020!Not all heroes wear Capes - Ours wear Masks and have Huge Hearts! In April, The Wesley Communities celebrated NationalSuperhero Day. We gave thanks for our front-line employeesshowing up every day to make a difference. It would beimpossible to get through this fight without them, and theirdedication and selflessness do not go unnoticed. “HeroesWork Here” signs were displayed outside of each community. To our true heroes who work for The Wesley Communities, thank you.Wesley Hospice participates in the Walkto End Alzheimer’sBecause the 2020 Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’swas held virtually, the Wesley Hospice team organized its own walkthrough the ravine at Wesley Glen Retirement Community withsome of our residents.
