We have tried for years to get back on the Martin Luther Kingsweekend for years and this year, we made it. It is the best weekend because there are very few conflicts withother activities and we have Monday off to rest up. We have to send a 50 deposit/person by early November. Therefore, I have to have a count with names ASAP. This trip is not limited to just Scouts -- invite your parents, sisters, cousins, friends, etc. The more the merrier! This is a great family outing – something for everyone. The costs are 176: for 2 nights lodging; lift tickets for the weekend, Sat. & Sun. breakfast, and Saturday dinner.Saturday lunch is on your own – plenty of places to eat at the Lodge. Eat Dinner Friday night and Lunch Sunday,on the road. You can rent skis ( 26) or snowboard ( 47) for the weekend or bring your own. Group ski lessonsare 15 for 1 hour – Lessons are mandatory for any scout who does not have the snow ski/ snowboarding MB.This is a resort with many activities – you don’t have to ski to have fun. You must pay the 50 deposit when you sign up.Contact Person: Amy McCabe (Hornet Patrol) 301-774-5116.Fire TipBuild small fires you can get close to rather than roaring blazes that drive you back. A quick fire to boila pot of water takes just a few handfuls of sticks. You may need several armloads of wood to cook alarge meal. Gather all the fuel before you light the fire so that you won't have to run off and find morewood while you are fixing dinner or enjoying an evening campfire with your friends.September 18 Bike Trip: Cancelled due to imposing weather (IVAN)7

The Troop 264 NewsletterPlanning OvernightSeptember 10, 2004For those of you who missed the planning meeting. We really lined up some great outings for the year. Just let one of the signaler reporters know and we’ll make a correction!Star Gazing WeekendSept 10-12, 2004At 5:00 pm we all met at St. Johns to pay fees and get all permission slips turned in. After that we were on ourway to the Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp near Luray, Virginia which took about 2 ½ hours. On our way therewe stop for dinner at the Burger King in Centerville. We all ate while Patrick Vaughn and Chris Chorigas playedin the play place. After everyone ate we again hit the road towards camp, but got stuck in heavy traffic for 30minutes. The back-up was 10 miles long!!! We finally made it to camp to find that Mr. Maxham, Scott Maxhamand Alex Cole had already set up tent and settled in. After all the gear and astronomical equipment had beenunloaded we helped set up all the tents. Then there we were at 10 o’clock in the evening looking throughtelescopes and gazing at the beautiful clear sky. We saw numerous nebulas, constellations and thousands ofstars. After a couple of hours looking at the stars and freezing ourselves into ice cubes, we went to bed. The nextmorning we went slag hunting. Slag is iron and rock formed together. The iron came from the furnace, whichmade cannonballs and musket balls for the Confederate Army in the Civil War. Then we ate breakfast and startedplaying Risk for a couple of hours. At noon, we went for around a 6-mile hike to the outlook. We weren't sure ifwe had found the outlook when we found this small ledge that looked out into the valley. The view was sobeautiful! We then headed back to the cars and went to Luray Caverns where we took the 1 hour tour which wasa 1 1/2 mile walk inside the cave. It was cold and the different rock formations were awesome. We saw “DreamLake,” Wishing Well, and the Great Stalactite Organ. So many beautiful things to see! Then we headed back forcamp and began preparing a spaghetti and salad dinner. During dinner Alex Evans, Patrick Vaughn and ChrisChorigas had a pie-eating contest and Patrick won once and Alex won once. Then the scouts went outside forsome running around and did stargazing again for another couple hours and went to bed. In the morning onSunday we took down our tents and packed up and prepared to go home. When everything was squared away weleft for home. It was an unforgettable weekend. The Troop 264 NewsletterQUARTERMASTER REPORT(or The Proper Care And Feeding Of Tents)Always make sure tents are clean and dried completely, before storing.During our September Gear Day, for the returning and issuing of patrol gear, we discovered many mildewed tents. This was quite alarming, since it is easily preventable and the troop stresses the importance of storing your tentsclean and dry.For those who don’t know, mildew happens when tents, sleeping bags, etc. are stored damp or wet. They should bedried out immediately upon return from a camping trip, before storing. Mildew can destroy tents and impart anoffensive odor. We can’t use the tents in there present state. Therefore, we are in the process of trying to makethem usable again, which takes many days and a lot of work. It is a lot easier if we store tents properly. How dowe do that, you say?I called a Eureka representative about the care of scout tents. This is there advice (Some of this advice should alsobe used for you sleeping bag, wet jackets, or any other wet material): Within 2 hours of your return from a campout, your tent (including the fly) should be completely opened upand dried out before storing in a dry place. If it is a sunny day, set the tent up outside. It will dry in a couple of hours. Take it down, preferablybetween the hours of 12 (noon) and 3 pm, before dew starts forming, and store it in a dry place. If it is a bad weather day, set up, hang up, or spread out your tent in the garage or basement. (If you haveexposed beams in your garage or basement, you can put 4 nails in the beams and loosely hang yourtent upside down.) Sweep out (or vacuum) your tent completely. Pay special attention to the seams where dirt can gather. Donot store tent with dirt and food wrappers. (By the way, you shouldn’t be eating food in your tent, unless you liketo sleep with critters). If your tent is muddy or dirty, you should wash those spots with lukewarm water and ivory soap; and rinsecompletely. Allow tents to dry completely, then store in a dry place. If you have been camping on sand or a lot of dirt, You should wipe down the zipper, to prolong the life anduse of the zipper, and wipe down the poles and stakes, to prevent corrosion.***Within a couple of days after the campout, you should return your dried-out tent and other patrol equipmentto your patrol quartermaster, for storage and accountability.***To Patrol Quartermasters: When you get a tent back, open it up to make sure it is dry. It only take a couple ofminutes. To all scouts: Remember you will have to sleep in that tent again. Take care of it.Any questions? Call the Greenspon’s (301-774-5394) or greenspo@erols.comWhat?
