AV Series Cooling Tower /AVSeries towers are galvanized steel, factoryassembled, general purpose crossflowcooling towers, designed to serve normal airconditioning and refrigeration systems as well aslight industrial loads. They evolve from a singleflowconcept of towers pioneered by Marley in the 1950s,and incorporate all of the design advancements thatour customers have found valuable. They representthe current state of the art in this cooling towercategory. This booklet not only relates the language to usein describing an appropriate AV Series coolingtower—but also defines why certain items andfeatures are important enough to specify withthe intention of insisting upon compliance by allbidders. The left hand column of pages 14 thru 27provides appropriate text for the various specificationparagraphs, whereas the right hand columncomments on the meaning of the subject matter andexplains its value.3Pages 14 thru 20 indicate those paragraphswhich will result in the purchase of a basic coolingtower—one that accomplishes the specified thermalperformance, but which will lack many operation—andmaintenance-enhancing accessories and featuresthat are usually desired by those people who areresponsible for the continued and continuingoperation of the system of which the tower is part.It will also incorporate those standard materialswhich testing and experience has proven to provideacceptable longevity in normal operating conditions.Pages 21 thru 27 provide paragraphs intendedto add those features, components, and materialsthat will customize the tower to meet the user'srequirements.

A 3" dia. drain connectionis located below the overflow. See page 7 for details5 Outlet sizes vary according to GPM and arrangement. Seepages 6 and 7 for outlet sizes and details.6 Makeup water connection may be 1" or 2" dia., depending upontower heat load, water pressure, and desired connections. Seepage 6 for additional information.

AV Series Cooling Tower / Engineering Data: SchematicOutlet and Makeup Piping DetailsUnless otherwise specified, single-cell towers normallyhave a side-outlet suction appropriate for the design waterflow rate—see page 7. This usually assures the lowestpossible installed tower elevation. Side-suction connectionpipes extend roughly 3" outside the basin, and are beveledfor weld connection and also grooved for a mechanicalcoupling.Outlet piping can be kept below the cold water basinlevel by choosing a bottom outlet connection in lieu of theside suction. Bottom outlet design conform to standardclass 125 ANSI pipe flange specifications. All outlet arrangements include easily removable debris screens.Multicell towers, intended to operate together as a common unit, are joined by steel flumes between the collectionbasins. These flumes equalize the operating water levelbetween basins and also provide a flow passage from cellsnot equipped with outlets or makeup valves, often eliminating the need to specify an outlet and makeup valve foreach cell on a multicell installation. Refer to sales drawingsto obtain flow values of suctions and bottom outlets formulticell installations. The best choice for a tower used with a remote orindoor storage tank—see page 11—or on a concrete coldwater basin is usually a bottom outlet, with or withoutscreen.Makeup Water Flow Required–GPM to Maintain Three (3) ConcentrationsThe AV tower is equipped with a float-operated, mechanical makeup valves to automatically replenish this lostwater. The following tables, calculated for a concentrationof 3 times normal, indicate the rate of water loss, and thesize of valve(s) required. If your installation’s cold waterbasin will drain by gravity to a remote storage tank, or ifyou plan a separate means of controlling makeup water,we offer a price reduction for deleting the makeup valve.Cooling "Range" (hot water minus cold water)TowerGPM5º F10º F15º F20º F30º F40º 825060003875113150225300800050100150200300400NOTE I f circulating water is to be maintained at 2 concentrations instead of3, multiply table GPM values by 1.36 before sizing makeup valve.Makeup Valve Flow Capacities–GPMPressure at Valve Inletwhile flowing–psig1" DiamterValve1056902078120MakeupThe amount of water constantly evaporated from acooling tower varies directly with the heat load applied. In addition to evaporation, water is normally lost to theblowdown (bleed-off) necessary to maintain dissolvedsolids concentration at an acceptable level in the circulating water system.6NOTE2" DiameterValve30921434010616050117167 I f makeup water pressure exceeds 50 psig, use pressure reducerahead of valve. AV Series Cooling Tower / Engineering Data: Freeze PreventionWhen the ambient air temperature falls below 32 F, thewater in a cooling tower can freeze. Marley Technical Report#H-003 "Operating Cooling Towers in Freezing Weather"describes how to prevent freezing during operation. Availableat spxcooling.com or ask your Marley sales representative fora copy.During shutdown, water collects in the cold water basinand may freeze solid. You can prevent freezing by adding heatto the water left in the tower—or, you can drain the tower andall exposed pipework at shutdown.Electric Basin HeatersAn automatic basin water heater system is available consisting of the following components: Stainless steel electric immersion heater(s). —Threaded couplings are provided in the side of thecollection basin. N EMA 4 enclosure containing:—Magnetic contactor to energize heater. —Transformer to convert power supply to 24 volts forcontrol circuit. —Solid state circuit board for temperature andlow-water cutoff. Enclosure may be mounted on the side of the tower. Control probe in the collection basin to monitor watertemperature and level.Heater components are normally shipped separately forinstallation by others. Note: any exposed piping that is still filled with water atshutdown—including the makeup water line—should beelectrically traced and insulated (by others).11Steam Jet Basin HeaterPenberthy Houdaille bronze steam jet heaters (1 4" to 3 4")are available for freeze protection (installation by others).Injectors install in a coupling provided in the side of the collection basin. Live steam, as required, is injected directly intothe water. Condensed steam adds water to the basin, and theexcess will exit the overflow of the tower.Indoor Storage TankWith this type of system, water flows from an indoor tank, through the load system, and back to the tower, where it iscooled. The cooled water flows by gravity from the tower tothe tank located in a heated space. At shutdown, all exposedwater drains into the tank, where it is safe from freezing. The amount of water needed to successfully operatethe system depends on the tower size and GPM and on thevolume of water contained in the piping system to and fromthe tower. You must select a tank large enough to containthose combined volumes—plus a level sufficient to maintain aflooded suction on your pump. Control makeup water according to the level where the tank stabilizes during operation.

AV Series Cooling Tower / Environmental12Sound ControlSystem CleanlinessSound produced by an AV Series tower operating in anunobstructed environment will meet all but the most restrictivenoise limitations—and will react favorably to natural attenuation. Where the tower has been sized to operate within anenclosure, the enclosure itself will have a damping effect onsound. Sound also declines with distance—by about 5 dBAeach time the distance doubles. Where noise at a critical pointis likely to exceed an acceptable limit, several options areavailable—listed below in ascending order of cost impact:Cooling towers are very effective air washers. Atmosphericdust able to pass through the relatively small louver openingswill enter the circulating water system. Increased concentrations can intensify system maintenance by clogging screensand strainers—and smaller particulates can coat system heattransfer surfaces. In areas of low flow velocity—such as thecold water basin—sedimentary deposits can provide a breeding ground for bacteria. I n many cases, noise concerns are limited to nighttime, when ambient noise levels are lower and neighbors aretrying to sleep. You can usually resolve these situationsby using a two-speed motor in an 1800/900 configuration—operating the fans at half speed without cycling“after hours”. The natural nighttime reduction in wet-bulbtemperature makes this a very feasible solution in mostareas of the world, but the need to avoid cycling maycause the cold water temperature to vary significantly. W here noise is a concern at all times—for example, neara hospital—the best solution is to oversize the tower so itcan operate continuously at reduced (900 RPM) motorspeed. Typical sound reductions at half speed are 10dBA. E xtreme cases may require inlet and discharge soundattenuator sections—however, the static pressure lossimposed by attenuators may necessitate an increase intower size. This is the least desirable approach becauseof the significant cost impact—and because of the obstruction to normal maintenance procedures.Your Marley sales representative will help you meet yoursound requirements.EnclosureOccasionally, cooling towers are located inside architectural enclosures for aesthetic reasons. Although AV Seriestowers adapt well to enclosures, the designer must realize thepotential impact of a poorly arranged enclosure on the tower’sperformance and operation. The designer must take care toprovide generous air inlet paths, and the tower’s fan cylinderdischarge height should not be lower than the elevation of thetop of the enclosure. Obtain a copy of Marley Technical Report#H-004 "External Influences on Cooling Tower Performance"from your Marley sales representative. As suggested in the aforementioned Technical Report, itmay also be advisable to specify a design wet-bulb temperature 1 F higher than normal to compensate for potential recirculation initiated by the enclosure. You’ll benefit from discussing your project with your Marley sales representative. In areas prone to dust and sedimentation, you should consider installing some means for keeping the cold water basinclean. Typical devices include side stream filters and a varietyof filtration media.Water TreatmentTo control the buildup of dissolved solids resulting fromwater evaporation, as well as airborne impurities and biological contaminants including Legionella, an effective consistentwater treatment program is required. Simple blowdown maybe adequate to control corrosion and scale, but biologicalcontamination can only be controlled with biocides. An acceptable water treatment program must be compatible with the variety of materials incorporated in a coolingtower—ideally the pH of the circulating water should fallbetween 6.5 and 8.0. Batch feeding of chemicals directlyinto the cooling tower is not a good practice since localizeddamage to the tower is possible. Specific startup instructionsand additional water quality recommendations can be found inthe AV Series User Manual which accompanies the tower andalso is available from your local Marley sales representative. For complete water treatment recommendations, consult acompetent, qualified water treatment supplier.CAUTIONThe cooling tower must be located at such distance anddirection to avoid the possibility of contaminated towerdischarge air being drawn into building fresh air intakeducts. The purchaser should obtain the services of aLicensed Professional Engineer or Registered Architectto certify that the location of the tower is in compliancewith applicable air pollution, fire, and clean air codes.

AV Series Cooling Tower / Application13Typical ApplicationsAlternative SelectionsThe AV Series tower can be used in normal applicationsrequiring cold water for the dissipation of heat. This includescondenser water cooling for air conditioning, refrigeration, andthermal storage systems, as well as their utilization for freecooling in all of those systems. They are also used in the cooling of jacket water for engines and air compressors, and arewidely applied to dissipate waste heat in a variety of industrialand manufacturing processes. In addition to the AV Series, we offer a full scope of Marleyproducts in various designs and capacities to meet the specialdemands of specific applications.Choosing the all stainless steel construction option, theAV Series can be confidently applied in unusually corrosiveprocesses and operating environments. However, no singleproduct line can answer all problems, and selective judgementshould be exercised in the following situationsApplications Requiring Alternative Cooling TowerSelectionsCertain types of applications are incompatible with anycooling tower with PVC film fill—whether AV Series or acompetitive tower of similar manufacture. PVC is subject todistortion in high water temperatures, and the narrow passages typical of film-type fill are easily clogged by turbid ordebris-laden water. Some of the applications, which call foralternative tower designs are: W ater temperatures exceeding 125 F—will adverselyaffect the service life and performance of normal PVCfill. E thylene glycol content—can plug fill passages as slimeand algae accumulate to feed on the available organicmaterials. F atty acid content—found in processes such as soapand detergent manufacturing and some food processing, fatty acids pose a serious threat for plugging fillpassages. P articulate carry over—often found in steel mills and cement plants, can both cause fill plugging, and can buildup to po-tentially damaging levels on tower structure. P ulp carry over—typical of the paper industry and foodpro-cessing where vacuum pumps or barometric condensers are used. Causes fill plugging which may beintensified by algae.Corrosion Resistance Q uadraFlow —fiberglass and stainless steel construction assures long service life in virtually any environment.Five-year full product warranty. Efficient PVC film fill.Uniquely different and architecturally attractive. S igma Series—available in wood, fiberglass, HDG steelor stainless steel structure. Field-erected for mediumto large projects. Available in a wide range of sizes. Efficient PVC film fill.Splash-Fill Towers S eries 10 / Series 15—wood structure, fiberglass casing, with splash-type fill. Similar capacities to Sigmaseries towers. Proven in hundreds of installations. Excellent in “dirty water” situations.
