Keynote Speaker: Sue SwensonSue Swenson served the Obama administrationfrom 2010-2017 in the US Department ofEducation as deputy assistant secretary forspecial education and rehabilitative services, andas acting assistant secretary twice during thattime. She previously directed The Arc US andthe Joseph P Kennedy, Jr. Foundation, as wellas serving as commissioner for developmentaldisabilities in the Clinton administration. Sue was a Kennedy fellowin the US Senate in 1996, and previously was the marketing directorfor professional services firms in academic, medical/surgical, andenvironmental science fields in Minnesota. She joined the disabilitymovement because her middle son Charlie had lifelong profounddisabilities. She was educated at the University of Chicago (AB, AM)and holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota. She currentlyserves in a volunteer capacity as the president-elect of InclusionInternational, the UN-recognized disabled people’s organization forpeople with intellectual and developmental disabilities and theirfamilies.“Honor the Past. What is NJLEND?NJLEND is The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities’ NewJersey’s Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and RelatedDisabilities program. NJLEND provides graduate-level interdisciplinary,clinical, leadership training aimed at preparing the next generationof health and allied health leaders to address the needs of childrenand young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), relateddevelopmental disabilities, and other maternal and child healthpopulations as part of a national network of LEND programs. Inaddition to interdisciplinary, leadership education, LEND programsfocus on developing future health care professionals who are culturallycompetent and provide family-centered care to diverse patients. AllNJLEND Fellows have a Faculty Mentor from their discipline whowork with the Fellow to integrate NJLEND competencies with therequirements of the student’s academic program, as well as to guideand reflect on their individual leadership development throughout theLEND year.
