These world recognised standardsensure the highest possible quality, efficiencyand reliable performance.All models (except hold open) are testedand approved on Fire Doors in accordancewith Australian standard AS1905:1:1997 Fireresistant door sets.New multi functional designs offer the specifier,stockist or the installer outstanding versatilityand low inventory levels.Effective door installation requires that the doorand frame be of sufficient strength or reinforced toensure secure anchorage of the door closer unit.A door fitted with a door closer must be hungon good quality aligned hinges so that the doorswings freely without bias in both directions.The closed door must be clear in the door frameand when a lock is fitted the latch bolt mustengage freely within the strike.When specifying manually operated doorclosers the following should be considered:door size, in particular width of door; doorweight; type of installation; environmentalconditions; location of door; operationfrequency of door; the people using the door.Door size and the pressure exerted on thesurface area of the door due to wind gusts or airconditioning and the spring strength requiredto hold or close the door against this pressuremust be considered along with the ability of theuser to exert the force necessary to push or pullthe door open. The location of door furniturewill influence the leverage available to theperson opening the door.1
Door ClosersSelection of door closer size is judged in two ways.1. Does the door closer have the strength toeffectively close the door against unexpectedair pressures?2. Is the door closer oversize for the applicationand therefore affecting the ease of operation?Efficiency of the door closer also has a majorbearing on ease of operation. For optimumperformance it is essential that a highly efficientdoor closer of a correct size is selected.The use of spring strength adjustability, whichallows fine tuning of strength on site, hassimplified this task but not removed all of theguesswork. With more architects and engineersbecoming conscious of the problems causedby incorrect selection of door closer strength, ithas become the responsibility of manufacturersto provide better technical information, such asclosing torque and efficiency of their products.The following chart has been produced tocover most conditions. If you have an unusualapplication which you feel requires specialconsideration, please forward all relevantinformation to your local office and we will behappy to advise the best door control for yourapplication.Fire doors and pressurised stairwells posesignificant challenges in ensuring closing andlatching of fire doors. The problems are createdby differential air pressures resulting fromairconditioning systems, either on one or theother side of the door. To achieve complete firesafety, fire doors must latch securely at all times.If this performance is not achieved, the stairwellmay be unsafe, and in the event of fire, loss of lifeand property may occur. Correct selection of doorhardware is of paramount importance in ensuringthat the appropriate operating standards are met.Fire doors which open into a pressurised stairwellmust meet the following criteria: the door must close against a pressuredifferential between the airconditioned floorarea and non-airconditioned stairwell; Always round up to the next door width(ie for 870 mm door use 950 mm). If parallel arm installation, then use nextdoor width door line (ie, for 830 mm door use950 mm). For internal doors deduct 200 mm from actualdoor width (ie for 1250 mm internal door use1050 line). This chart is based on normal climaticconditions (ie pressure differential of 30Paor wind of 15 knots). If more severe conditions are expected then usethe next door width or consult the office in yourlocation (refer back page).
