DEALER SERVICE BULLETINNumber: DSB14-0025 (Airefco Rev. D)Title: Bristol Two Stage Compressor or UnitReplacement ProgramDate: 1/1/16Supersedes:DSB11-0025B(Issued 4/1/15)Expiration: 12/31/16PRODUCT CATEGORY:Heat Pumps and Split System ACMODELS AFFECTED:Bryant: 698B, 598B, 286A, 187ACarrier: 38YDB, 38TDB, 25HNA6, 24ANA7Serial Number(s): All serial numbers within 10 years of unit production date as indicated by the unitserial number.**Commercial installations are not eligible for the program.**SITUATION:This bulletin sets forth the modified replacement program for Bristol two stage compressors orcomplete outdoor units due to a compressor failure occurring on or after April 1st, 2014 IF such failureoccurs within 10 years of the unit production date AND if the unit still has valid warranty coverage. The Bristol two stage reciprocating compressor has undergone continuous improvements to extendits long term reliability, but is more sensitive to certain operating conditions than a scroll compressor.Oversized equipment, improper airflow and charging issues are a few examples of applications andoperating conditions that can cause additional stress on the system’s components, including thecompressor.SOLUTION:Only units that are within 10 years of the manufacturing date AND still have valid warranty coveragewill qualify for the program. Units outside of the 10 years from manufacturing date window that havevalid warranty coverage will still have compressor coverage via limited standard warranty terms. AllBristol Compressor Claims must be filed under the terms of the DSB. Claims filed through standardwarranty channels, including optional labor contracts, will be denied. Any repeat compressor failuresmust still go through DSB 14-0025, however, this does require prior Airefco Service Manager reviewand approval to rule out any contributing factors related to installation or application. The customer has a choice of 2 options:Option 1: (Non-Branded Carrier/Bryant Dealers may only use Option #1A)A. Compressor replacement without optional labor contract Carrier provides the replacement compressor and associated parts and pays a 200 dealerallowance for labor cost. The replacement compressor and associated parts assume the remainder of the standardlimited warranty from the original unit installation date.

DSB14-0025 (Airefco Rev )B. Compressor replacement with optional labor contract Carrier pays a “tiered” optional contract labor and materials allowance for labor andmiscellaneous parts (see Table #2 in Policy section below) in addition to providing thereplacement compressor. The replacement compressor assumes the remainder of the standard limited warranty and theoptional labor contract from the original unit installation date. All Failed Compressors MUST be returned to Airefco in order to process the claim. The following Bristol TS Compressor Part Numbers are covered under this bulletin.Prior to 2006RCD part -5122K2006 & AfterRCD part tol 89A514BBCAMfg part 8Bristol fg part 7009-1000-00Option 2:Unit replacement without optional labor contract Customer pays a “tiered” unit replacement “buy-in” (see Table #1 below). Determine ifunit is eligible for program by utilizing appendix B to determine if it is within 10 years of its productiondate AND has valid warranty coverage. If unit is eligible, determine customer choice for unitreplacement or compressor replacement. Provide the completed Bristol Program Audit Form with thecustomer’s signature to your distributor service manager to obtain pre-approval for replacement underthis program. For additional questions:Carrier Expert Central:800-946-2930Bryant Solution Center:888-994-723Customer brochures are available to help explain the program and choices to the customer. DSB14-0025 (Airefco Rev D)Appendix A:Bristol Compressor Program Diagnostic ReferenceThese procedures outline the steps associated with diagnosing the compressor and filling out theprogram claim form. Please use this section as a reference when filling out the required claim formfor the program. After review of this completed Bristol Compressor Evaluation Form the DistributorService Manager is authorized to sign and approve a replacement outdoor unit or compressorreplacement under the terms of this SMB.Proof of Compressor Electrical Failure(Defined as Compressor windings electrically open, shorted or winding resistance measurements notcorrect. If electrically open, the internal overload may be open and steps must be taken to determineif a problem external to the compressor is the cause of the overload trip.)Important Note: Prior to testing the compressor, disconnect and lockout/tagout all electricalpower to system, including indoor and outdoor power sources.Terminal Locations for winding resistance readingsRun windingTerminal RTerminal #3CommonTerminal CStart windingTerminal SChecking Compressor Winding ResistanceUse the symbol for Open circuitThe sum of the start and run winding resistances should be equal to the value measured between “R”and “S”. Resistance reading (R to C) (S to C) (R to S) if not, compressor winding is damagedIf R to C and S to C are open circuit and R to S has resistance, the internal overload is open. Thecompressor needs time to cool to allow the internal overload to close. If the overload has opened, then other problems may be present in the refrigerant system that needs to be evaluated. Somepossible causes of an open internal overload include insufficient refrigerant charge, restriction in therefrigerant circuit, and power supply problems. Replacing the unit may not solve these problems.

DSB14-0025 (Airefco Rev D)Checking the start ComponentsPlace a clamp amp meter between the start relay terminal 4 and the start capacitor. With the relayclosed, you should observe amperage if the relay opens amperage should disappear.Measuring the voltage across the open relay terminals (SR 6 to SR4) if the relay terminals are closedvoltage should be zero (0). When the relays open a voltages should be measured at a minimum thevoltage should be line voltage. How the relay worksPl4 is a three (3) pin locking header with pin 2 removed. Header is labeled sr.The connections are:pl4-1srconnection for the start relaypl4-2not usedpl4-3srground return for the start relayStart relay outputsr85ma22vdcO
