100 East 8th Street, Suite 150, Holland, MI, 49423 ― 616.395.7919MONTHLY NEWSLETTERIssue: 407 July HASPwww.youtube.com/HASPHopePRESIDENT’S MESSAGESharon Arendshorst, HASP Presidentsnarendshorst@gmail.com 616.335.3132 (home) 616.566.0219 (cell)I begin my term as HASP President with a great deal of gratitude and confidence in HASP. I’m gratefulfor our rich 34-year history and the leadership that has brought us to this point in time. I’m confident aswe work together during this period of many transitions that we will grow stronger and will discern avision for our future. Thank you for entrusting me with the privilege of serving as HASP President, andserving with you, this coming year.Recently, I’ve been pondering what it means to be a peer-led organization. While Curriculum CommitteeChair, my focus was on HASP members teaching other HASP members. That is a key and a veryvaluable component of being peer-led. Over the past year, 51 HASP members taught classes (about 1/3of the presenters). I continue to encourage more HASP members to teach courses. It is a great learningopportunity for the presenter as well as for the students. Our lifelong learning members are eager andgracious participants in the classroom and treat all our teachers with respect. Teach once and you’relikely to return to teach again.Teaching is not the only way we are peer-led. As our HASP community has grown, our organizationalstructure has grown. We have members serving on the Board of Directors, standing committees, subcommittees, and short-term task forces to facilitate our many avenues of learning and to lead ourorganization. During this past year, 71 HASP members served on these boards. In addition, manyvolunteered at the front desk and greeted visitors, cared for our library, provided technical support, andpitched in in many other ways. Part of our peer-led commitment is serving in the Hope and Hollandcommunities. Last year, 60 HASP members volunteered in Hope College classrooms.Tallying the numbers above, over 200 HASP members have been directly involved during this past yearin leading HASP. We are truly a peer-led community of lifelong learners. These numbers do not includethe other side of the equation, the many members who attended classes, participated in monthlyprograms, and enjoyed special events.Page 1 of 9

As you renew your membership for the coming year, you are asked to identify specific areas of interestin which you might be willing to serve HASP. Please give this some thought. This information will help usget you involved in areas of your interest. Many leadership roles expire each year, and we want toconnect interests to responsibilities as we continue to be peer-led into our coming future.During this new HASP year, let us continue to engage in the full breadth our HASP learningopportunities, to explore and discuss important topics with curiosity and respect, to serve our Hollandand Hope communities with grace, to participate fully in peer-led leadership, and through these avenuesdevelop new friendships as we continue to nurture existing relationships.MONTHLY PROGRAMSClaudia Berry, Monthly Program Chairclaudia@olwenberry.com 616.399.2538THIS MONTH’S PROGRAMDate / Time: Tuesday, July 5, 2022 9:30am - 10:45am (doors open at 9:00am)Location:Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts, 221 Columbia Ave, Holland, MI, 49423 (in-person)HASP@Hope YouTube Page, www.youtube.com/HASPHope (virtual)“Election Administration in the Post-2020 Era: Building Trust and Securing Our Infrastructure forthe Future” presented by JUSTIN ROEBUCK, Ottawa County Clerk and Register of DeedsBy nearly every standard, the 2020 Presidential Election was one of the most transparent and secure inour history. Yet the facts that support this statement have been largely ignored due to a post-2020narrative that has convinced millions of Americans of a “rigged system”. The pressure and addedscrutiny caused by widespread distrust has also exposed an elections infrastructure that is in seriousneed of reinforcement. What does this mean for the future of our democratic process? For democracy tothrive in coming generations, we need investment now to develop public trust and ensure a betterinfrastructure. Though the claims of a rigged election have been proven inaccurate, there are still manyways that election officials can and must create a more transparent and secure system. However, wecannot do it alone. We need resources from federal, state, and local governments; and we needcommunity leaders to understand the facts and speak the truth. Strengthening our elections will takeserious investment from all of us. Are we prepared to do what it takes? As County Clerk and Register of Deeds, Justin Roebuck serves as the chief election officer for OttawaCounty’s 220,000 voters. Justin’s passion is to build trust with honesty and transparency in the electionprocess. His goal is to change the way election officials interact with voters by modeling proactive, consistent, and fact-based communication. In 2021, he was honored by his colleagues as Michigan’s“County Clerk of the Year”. Justin currently serves on the Standards Board of the U.S. ElectionAssistance Commission (EAC), and as a member of the Bi-Partisan Policy Center’s Elections TaskForce. He is the Chair of the Michigan Council of Election Officials, and Co-Chair of the LegislativeCommittee of the Michigan Association of County Clerks. He was appointed by the Michigan SupremeCourt to the Michigan Judicial Council, and has been appointed by Governors Snyder and Whitmer tothe Michigan Electronic Recording Commission, where he is currently serving as Chair.Page 2 of 9

I do hope that you have had a chance to examine oursummer catalog as it offers a plethora of interesting courses covering topics as diverse as beekeeping, automatic transmissions, and the Ox-Bow School of Art. As in the past, courses are being offered in avariety of modalities; 26 of 31 courses have in-person components while 20 of them can be attendedremotely. For those of you who have not enrolled, there is still time to register for July and Augustcourses.Although summer may seem like a time to relax, behind the scenes our subcommittees are busilyworking on Fall 2022 courses. There will likely be a lineup of over 100 sessions. Stay tuned! One issue our President and my predecessor, Sharon Arendshorst, has stressed in the past is courseattendance. I will continue to stress this myself and will be saying more about it in the future. For now, please show up for classes in which you have enrolled. This is not only good for you and your mind, butit makes those classes more lively and interesting, honors the efforts of the coordinator and presenter, and, in very subtle ways, ensures the vitality of the entire HASP organization. All constituents, students, coordinators, and presenters are positively impacted by your attendance. And if you can’t attend, pleasenotify the HASP office (hasp@hope.edu) to allow wait-listed members the opportunity to attend.2022 - 2023 CURRICULUM SUBCOMMITTEE LEADERSHIPFine Arts: Sarah Briggs (sarahbriggs969@gmail.com) and Lynne Williams (d.lwilliams@sbcglobal.net)Humanities: Tom Arendshorst (trshorts@gmail.com)Science, Medicine, and Technology (SMT): Susan Couch (couch.sm@gmail.com)Social Sciences: Larry Lynn (oldrun09@gmail.com)Page 5 of 9
