During the next fewyears that followed, miners wheedled an estimated 60million worth of gold out of the ground, and within afew years Yreka became known to many as “TheRichest Square Mile”!The image of the Siskiyou County Gold Display(at bottom of Page 3) was taken over 60 years ago, in1947. The photo shows many prize winning specimensof placer and quartz nuggets. One should know thatall of the gold in the print was mined or found withinSiskiyou County! A wide variety of types and colorsof gold can be seen. This is the only known collectionof its kind and a portion of this same collection wasshown at the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco,California on Treasure Island to let the world know thatgold is a big deal in Siskiyou County!Today one can view this gold collection that hasbeen enlarged and is displayed quite professionally. Avisit to the foyer of the Siskiyou County Courthouselocated in Yreka one finds this impressive collectionof gold. The display has often been estimated at 1million, but with today's gold prices pushing everupward, it is everyone's guess to the real value! OurCounty gold display is encased by a layer of native rockand measures 8 by 12 feet and is located just a few feetfrom the law enforcement officers that guard and securethe area. Although the display is protected by a thicklayer of bulletproof glass and is virtually burglar proof,in 1979 a couple made an unsuccessful attempt to stealthe gold collection. They apparently entered thecourthouse through a bathroom window and smashedthe display setting off a silent alarm. The police arrivedand apprehended the two after a short chase down anearby street about a block away.October 2010 Page 2

HISTORY OF YREKA:Black Bear Diners, Inc.by Claudia A. East - continued . . .TYLER CARMICHAELOWNERThis gold is owned by the County of Siskiyou andwas accumulated a little at a time by the members ofthe Board of Supervisors through purchases anddonations. One of the most valuable items (listed witha value 33,000 in 1947) is a large gold nuggetdiscovered by a miner in a pile of discarded shavingsnear Hawkinsville just a few miles north of Yreka. Alsofound in the collection is the "shoe nugget" found nearthe Scott River in 1913 and purchased by the City for 550, and held a value of 28,000 in 1947.The County Treasurer-Tax Collector for SiskiyouCounty is the person chiefly responsible for the displayand the acquisition of the contents. A former TreasurerTax Collector, Susan Reather, said that the gold withinthe collection represents nearly all the mines fromSiskiyou County. Mr. Michael Hendryx, the SiskiyouCounty Museum Curator and Director, arranges theexhibit and adds new donations from time to time withthe able assistance of the law enforcement officers athis side.Special thanks go to Michael Hendryx forproviding the historical information about our worldclass Gold Display and allowing us to use thisinformation! It is home to Crater Lake National Park.Actually a 6-mile wide caldera, scientists believe the deep bluelake was formed by the eruption and collapse of Mount Mazamanearly 7000 years ago, an event witnessed by local Native Americantribes. One Klamath legend tells of two Chiefs, Llao of the BelowWorld and Skell of the Above World, who went to war against eachother. In the end, Llao’s home, Mount Mazama, was destroyed.Wildlife thrives in this region. The largest wintering populationof Bald Eagles in the lower 48 states is in Klamath County. Locatedalong the Pacific Flyway, it is home to six wildlife refuges and onenational park. Although the region possesses excellent soil foragriculture, it has a short growing season, extremely cold winters, and low rainfall. The logging industry thrived here during the early to mid-20thcentury, especially after the Southern Pacific Railway arrived in1909. In fact, 3/4 of the county is covered by forests, although over1/2 is publicly owned. With the decline in logging, however, tourismand wood products production have increased. Agriculture hastraditionally been the area’s other great industry.Klamath Falls, the county seat, sits beside Upper Klamath Lakeand under the Pacific Flyway. Originally called Linkville by GeorgeNurse who founded the town in 1867, the city’s name was changedto Klamath Falls in 1893. In 1890, its population numbered 2,444;in 2000, it reached 64,000. The town grew as a result of theconstruction of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1880s.Klamath Falls is the home of the Favell Museum, considered bymany to be one of the three best Western museums in the nation. Itcontains over 30,000 Indian arrowheads and points, and more than475 baskets.Jean KarlssonRealtorDRE License #01195489Heritage Properties1001 South Main StreetYreka, CA 96097(530) 598-4528 iyou-yreka.comwww.jeffersonbackroads.comThe CityofKlamathFalls inthe early1900s.Photocourtesyof GailJenner.October 2010 Page 4

Discovering The State of Jeffersonby Gail L. Jenner - continued . . .Crater Lake NationalPark is located halfwaybetween Bend and KlamathFalls, on Highway 97. It isthe nation’s fifth oldestnational park, having beensigned into law by PresidentTheodore Roosevelt in 1902.The lake is the deepest in theUnited States and the seventhdeepest in the world. Thewater is so clear that one cansee down to 100 feet.William Gladstone Steelfirst saw the lake in 1885,after hiking to its rim with afriend. In 1896, he took agroup of men, including John Muir, to the lake; Muirreportedly called it “the one grand wonder of the region.”In 1907, Steel formed the Crater Lake Company and setup a small tent city near the lake. He then sought funding forthe construction of at least one grand hotel, which opened in1915. It went through years of additions and remodeling, butwas eventually closed in 1989. However, since then, it hasbeen completely renovated and was reopened in 1995.
